Social media networks banned 'thinspiration' in 2012 in a bid to stop young girls seeing and sharing images of unwell-looking individuals crippled with bulimia and anorexia, but a new study reveals that they've found a new hashtag
WORRYINGLY thin girls have found a way to get around social media's 'thinspiration' ban with a brand new hashtag - 'bonespiration'.
Social media networks banned the use of tags that could promote eating disorders in 2012, but it seems that some users have adopted an alternative.
A new study published in the Journal of Eating Disorders, said the photos were a form of “social contagion” and that the images tagged this way are even more unsettling than previously seen.
Psychologist Catherine Talbot who works at Exeter University Medical School said she had found 140,000 images on Instagram linked to bonespiration in the last week alone.

After analysing more than 730 images posted by girls and young women on social media sites including Twitter and Instagram, she and her co-authors
found that they were significantly worse than images tagged “thinspiration”.
The researchers saw that 26 per cent of bonespiration images show protruding hip bones, 23 per cent ribs, 22 per cent collarbones and per cent spine.
Catherine argues that banning this hashtag is pointless, and that girls will just find an alternative, but that social media networks need to remove the images, just as they would do with illegal pornography.
Instead she thinks schools need to bolster the curriculum with extra lessons about positive body image in order to build pupils' resilience to such images and weightloss-related peer pressure.
However she admitted that "building resilience is no way of tackling a very serious psychiatric illness.”
Marjorie Wallace, the chief executive of mental health charity Sane, told The Times that the huge rise in young girls with depression and anxiety was linked to the rise of “addictive” social media.
She said: “This can play upon the extreme loneliness and secrecy of those suffering from eating disorders, particularly adolescent girls.
"As one caller to our helpline told us, ‘There’s a feeling that one daren’t recover [and stop posting images] because then you’d no longer belong.’
“Anorexia and eating disorders are the most fatal of psychiatric disorders and these images are not showing that thin is beautiful but focusing on the skeletal side.”
