When the female body washed up on a beach by Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base north of San Diego, it was so slim and youthful-looking that investigators initially assumed she was a teenager.

It was only later that the remains were determined to be those of a 58-year-old former model and B-list actress who had once aspired to be known as “the sexiest woman in the world.”

Anneka Vasta, known as Anneka Di Lorenzo in the 1970s and the 1975 Penthouse Pet of the Year, was found earlier this year in a restricted area of the base with her neck and back broken. But investigators are struggling to determine whether she took her own life, died accidentally or fell victim to a murderer.

The mystery is the latest chapter in her sad life story. After becoming a Pet of the Year, she acted in Caligula and other films and dated Penthouse magazine publisher Bob Guccione – a relationship that devolved into a bitter sexual harassment case.

She went on to become a nursing assistant who was very chatty with strangers – perhaps too much so, family members say. But she had a history of mental health problems, including paranoia, and she was on medications – although an autopsy found no drugs in her body.

Investigators say Vasta parked at a vista point atop 60-foot bluffs, but her body was found on rocky sand about a mile south. If Vasta jumped or fell, she wouldn’t have hit the water, because the tide isn’t high enough, they say.

“The main unanswered question that we have is how she got from her vehicle to the water,” Navy special agent Rachel McGranaghan tells the San Diego Union-Tribune . “We know her life ended in the water, in some circumstance, we just don’t know how.”

On Jan. 2, two days before her body was found, Vasta rented a room at a Motel 6. There’s no evidence she actually used the room.

Inside her 2001 Mazda 626 sedan were signs of trauma. A woman’s leopard-print blouse and a sports bra, stained with blood, were wrapped in a plastic bag that investigators believe is an ice bucket liner from the Motel 6.

A steak knife covered with Vasta’s blood lay on the passenger floorboard. There were slashes on Vasta’s wrist, but not deep enough to kill her.

Family members say Vasta had a daughter in college whom she spoke with every day, and she would not have committed suicide. They speculate someone may have killed her.

As Vasta’s sister, Susan Thoreson, tells the Union-Tribune : “I think something happened when Anneka couldn’t maybe fend for herself.”

Her nude body was discovered on January 4, 2011 by joggers, having washed up on United States Marine Corps Base - Camp Pendleton training beach at in California. Her neck and back were broken and the cause of death was drowning. Her car was found at the Camp Pendleton rest area off of Interstate 5 about 60 feet (18 meters) from the beach. She was still in such good physical shape that the Marine Corps military police who first arrived at the scene thought that they were looking at the remains of a teenager. Naval authorities, investigating because of the location where the body was found, still do not know whether there was foul play or if her death was accidental.

Raised a daughter, Jessica. She had three sisters: Barbara Zezza, Jodi Servin, and Susan Marie Thoreson. Moreover, Di Lorenzo was working as a nursing assistant at the time of her death.

Di Lorenzo worked as a receptionist, a cocktail waitress, and a topless dancer as well as studied acting and participated in several beauty contests prior to becoming the Penthouse Pet of the Month in the September, 1973 issue of "Penthouse." She subsequently graced the cover of the December, 1973 issue of "Viva." Anneka has secondary roles in the enjoyably trashy 70's drive-in exploitation pictures "The Centerfold Girls," "Mama's Dirty Girls," and "Act of Vengeance." Di Lorenzo was named the Penthouse Pet of the Year in the October, 1975 issue of "Penthouse" (she both graced the cover and did a nude pictorial for this particular issue). Anneka did a coast to coast promotional tour of the United States in which she visited war veteran hospitals in October, 1975 and embarked on an international USO tour for the US Department of Defense which lasted from December, 1975 to January, 1976. She portrayed the depraved Messalina in both the notorious "Caligula" and the cheesy Italian soft-core comedy cash-in "Messalina! Messalina!". Anneka moved to New York City in the early summer of 1977. Photos from her steamy lesbian love scene in "Caligula" with fellow "Penthouse" Pet Lori Wagner were published in the June, 1980 issue of "Penthouse." Di Lorenzo's final film appearance was a small part as a nurse in Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill." Anneka's career suffered as a direct result of the box office failure and harsh critical reception of "Caligula." In 1988 she sued "Penthouse" magazine publisher Bob Guccione on charges of sexual harassment. Anneka only won a measly $4.06 in damages after the trial was over and finished. Guccione struck back at her by reprinting the photos of Di Lorenzo and Wagner's lesbian love scene in the February, 1991 issue of "Penthouse." Di Lorenzo's dead body was discovered on the shore by joggers in Camp Pendleton, California on January 4, 2011; she was 58 years old.
