Каренина — знатная петербургская дама, сестра Стивы Облонского, жена Алексея Каренина. Толстому хотелось написать роман о женщине из высшего общества, «потерявшей себя», вокруг которой легко сгруппировались многие мужские типы, будившие творческое воображение писателя.
