When it returned to BBC Two for its second season, it promised a whopping 30 sex scenes.
And on the most recent episode of saucy French royal drama Versailles, it was the turn of actress Anna Brewster - who plays Madame de Montespan, the king's mistress - to bare all.
Unsuspecting viewers were suddenly faced with a scene in which the pretty brunette takes a bath - obviously naked - but soon stands up, leaving nothing to the imagination.

The character stands, soaking, her long brunette locks in a sodden strand along her shoulder, with nothing covering her modesty, as she seduces Louis XIV.

Madame de Montespan was seen lying back, her top torn open, again totally bare-breasted - with blood dripped on to her, in what seems to be a masochistic encounter.
The first season shocked viewers with its high volume of explicit sex scenes; and season two of controversial BBC drama has certainly continued in the same vein.

The jaw-dropping scenes have also included courtiers enjoying a mass orgy involving an array of sexual tastes.
Courtiers have been seen coupled up with groups of girls going to bed together in the latest controversial scenes from the French-Canadian production, which has a £21 million budget.
Other explicit scenes involve the King's brother enjoying a gay orgy and Louis romping with Madame de Montespan.

Set in 1667 France’s King Louis XIV is 28 years old with a voracious sexual appetite and a string of young mistresses.
In order to bring his plotting courtiers to heel – and provide a lavish setting for his romantic liaisons – Louis transforms his father’s hunting lodge in Versailles on the outskirts of Paris into the most magnificent chateau in Europe, a place where he’ll feel protected and can indulge his prodigious urge for sex.

The show has been slammed as ‘pornography’ for scenes more explicit than ever before – including a five-in- a-bed sex scene.
Even the trailer for the show didn't pull any punches when it first debuted, featuring male and female nudity, and the Sun King inviting viewers to a court dominated by ‘corruption’, ‘darkness’, ‘temptation’ and ‘murder’.
Critics have accused the BBC of pandering to the lowest common denominator and being irresponsible in showing the French series at prime time (9.30pm on Fridays).

Norman Wells, of the Family Education Trust, said: ‘The BBC may choose to refer to Versailles as a “period drama”, but a programme featuring such sexually explicit scenes is quite simply pornography dressed up under another name.’
Chris McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: ‘It’s TV junk food that is playing to the lowest common denominator and it has little to say in terms of history.’
But historian Lucy Worsley approved of the show – which is made in English.
She said: ‘They can take their clothes off and swing from the lampshades if it will get viewers interested in the baroque era, which is quite a hard sell.’

The BBC’s decision to screen a second series, from French broadcaster Canal Plus, will raise eyebrows given that series one was so controversial.
The show’s historical adviser, Mathieu Da Vinha, said: ‘A producer told me nowadays a TV series has to have a sex scene or violence every 15 minutes, although this was not a specific rule.’
The BBC said: 'Versailles is an established series shown after 9pm on BBC2 and its content is nothing beyond the expectations of a post-watershed UK television audience.'
