Anime Fetish
J-List has had the good fortune to have stayed in business for 25+ years, thanks to me having excellent timing at starting the first international anime located inside Japan and of course having the best customers in the world. One thing I’ve always been fascinated by is how certain unique fetishes will always become super popular for a few months, which are then replaced by something new. Here’s a blog post exploring the various old and new anime fetishes spanning the history of J-List!
For this post, I’ll try to focus on anime fetishes that are specific to Japan. Obviously, foot fetish or S&M or giantess love are a thing in every country, but unless they played a part in the specific history of J-List and the products we’ve sold over the years, I wouldn’t include it.
J-List started business in October of 1996, and back in those days the Internet was having a love affair with JAV idols, like Akira Fubuki and Madoka Ozawa. We were the first shop to sell legit products featuring these actresses. The first hit product we had were the JAV calendars, sold by the hundreds.
Although it’s a dead word today, one of the driving fetishes in 1990s Japan was buru-sera , which means “bloomers [Japanese P.E. uniforms] and sailor suits.” This was the heyday of girls selling their old uniforms for $200 in shops, which would be purchased by perverted men.
Although animated tentacles have come to define Japan in the eyes of the West, the Japanese are mostly unaware of this and would be surprised if you told them. The first explosion of tentacle doujinshi was probably around 1998.
What started out as a cute trend of anthropomorphizing computer OSes through fanart in the late 90s culminated in Microsoft creating official characters for Windows 7 and their Azure cloud platform. You can bet fans lewded their favorite OS-tan characters!
There once was a chain of family restaurants called Anna Miller’s which was very popular in the 1990s, and the girls had the cutest waitress uniforms that augmented their oppai . People would go to the branch in Yebisu because they had the cutest waitresses working there, and if you went near closing time you go watch the girls bend over while they cleaned up. Sadly all the restaurants are gone, but you can bet the next time I’m in Hawaii I’m going to visit the last store there .
Another of the great fetishes is suku-mizu or school swimsuit fetish. The above is an example of the old-style “skirt type” swimsuits, which have been replaced by a less-fetishizable standard type.
Women in Japan started wearing Western panties in the postwar period, and almost immediately men realized the simple joy of catching a glimpse of white as a cute girl passed by on a windy day. Appreciation for catching a quick shot of panchira became known as chirarism in the 1980s. The father of hentai, the great Go Nagai, made obsessing over pantsu a national pastime in his breakthrough manga and anime Harenchi Gakuen .
While I love a quick shot of pure white underneath a skirt, the early 2000s saw the rise of shimapan , or striped panties. According to my past research , an anime called Stellvia of the Universe featured a character wearing blue-and-white tried panties, which started things off. Shimapan is popular because “they’re neither white nor blue,” and the lines highlight the curves of what’s underneath.
Another one of our favorite anime fetishes is zettai ryouiki , which describes the “sweet three centimeters” (to borrow from the Lucky Star opening lyrics) between a girl’s skirt and the top of her over-knee socks. The word itself comes from Evangelion : the idea of the AT Fields (aka Absolute Terror Fields) morphed into something describing the best part of a girl.
I love the way anime generally makes fans less uptight about non-standard sexual relationships. One example is the popularity of otokonoko , which describes boys who are so cute, that they can pass for girls. The first example was Bridget from Guilty Gear , which gave us the phrase, “We’re all gay for Bridget.”
Another fun anime fetish is nyotaika , or male-to-female body transformation, which is the basis of the X-Change hentai visual novel series, pretty much the first big hit JAST USA had. Who wouldn’t want to see how the other half lives?

A similar fetish is futanari , which literally means “the two, being one.” We’ve got many products for fans of this genre on the site!
I’ll never forget the day anime became real for me. It was when the newly-minted brand Tamatoys made their first parody cosplay product, which purported to be the actual panties of Louise from Zero no Tsukaima , sold as a “parody” product similar to doujinshi. I can even tell you the date: July 27, 2011, because the product is still in our database. Now, parody hentai products are a whole category of fun products from Japan!
I’ll never forget being at Otakon in 2008, when the economy began to tank during the great financial crisis. One of the dealers was shouting, “50% off all manga, except yaoi!” This is an indication of how popular yaoi manga and games had become. Yuri also had its fans, though sadly it never had the huge commercial explosion that yaoi and BL had. But we’re still trying!
Although the anime fetish of brother/sister love can be traced to the groundbreaking Cream Lemon hentai anime from the 1980s (it’s episode 1 if you want to look it up, pervert!), it took the bursting of the DVD licensing bubble in 2006 for the imouto fetish to really take off. No longer able to make easy money by licensing shows for overseas, animation studios turned up the ecchi factor to bring domestic fans in.
It’s amazing that GALs — the flamboyantly-dressed girls who wear tons of makeup and are so fashionable — have remained a thing for so long. Originally an offshoot of girls who emulated the style of JPOP icon Namie Amuro in the mid-90s, they never went away. Anime helped make them popular with fans all over the world.
While we love the amazing hentai works of artist 40hara, who made the Iyapan genre what it is today, celebrating the odd enjoyment men get if a woman were to willingly lift her skirt and show her pantsu to us while wearing a disgusted face, we have to point out that the great Murakami Suigun really invented this genre. Happily, we’ve got artbooks by both artists in stock!

When it comes to sexual preferences, some anime characters are weird AF. Their strange fetishes pop up in multiple series, like the curious affinity for little sisters that is shared in multiple anime universes. Other fetishes are quite unique, like Todomatsu Matsuno's thing for bellybutton wrinkles and Akira Tsubaki's passion for drool. No matter what the fetish is, though, it can make for some seriously bizarre sex scenes and wild conversations in the more demure shows.
If you happen to share a kink with one of these characters, don't be offended. Everybody likes something that others might consider weird AF. As long you're not like the more perverted anime characters , there'll be no harsh judgment here.
That said, you'll probably find something that makes you raise an eyebrow below. Keep reading to see if any fetishes are missing from this list.
Mysterious Girlfriend X has one of the strangest premises in the romance anime genre. Considering how weird romance anime can get, that's saying a lot. 17-year-old Akira Tsubaki falls in love for the first time when he absentmindedly eats drool that his classmate Mikoto Urabe leaves on her desk. Somehow, the drool makes him fall in love with her.
Later, in lieu of doing typical things like kissing, the two decide to exchange drool. 
Itsuki Hashima of A Sister Is All You Need is into little sisters. He's a professional author whose work incorporates his fetish. Hashima is pretty successful despite sometimes taking things too far. In a book draft that gets rejected, the cartoon author writes about a little sister who prepares breakfast with her breast milk and her egg cells.
Hashima has no problem telling anyone who will listen about his affinity for little sisters, either. Even his little brother, Chihiro isn't spared the creepy details.
Golden Boy's Kintaro Oe would probably be happier hooking up with Madame President but rubbing his face all over her toilet seems to do the trick too. For some reason, Oe gets off on pressing his face against a toilet seat and tasting bidet water. 
Sojiro Izumi of Lucky Star is one of many anime characters who sits around the house in a dirty yukata and fetishizes little girls. Seriously, swap him out for Jiraiya from Naruto or Shigure Sohma from Fruits Basket and hardly anything changes.
Izumi is a self-proclaimed lolicon who frequently makes inappropriate comments about his teen daughter's friends. For this reason, it's often suggested that he'll be arrested. Thankfully, Izumi doesn't act on his desires but he does marry exceptionally young-looking adult Kanata.

Before judging me, allow me to explain. Someone requested that I do this blog.
She is one that asked me about my favorite fetish and what not. Ari asked for this, not I. Yes, I am using her for a scapegoat, because all of this is her fault.
Making a blog about my favorite anime fetish would be creepy. So I decided I would make a blog about my top five anime fetishes. ...Which is even worse now that I consider it. Oh well, too late to turn back. Honestly though, I had no idea what my top five anime fetishes were. So I contemplated about the top five items I enjoy seeing in anime/ manga the most. I’m relieved to say that they aren’t that messed up as some might believe. I can only imagine what is going through the minds of those that are reading this blog. All I have to say is, please stop imagining what you're imagining. I’m not that much a pervert I’ll have you know. (This coming from the guy who made a blog about his top five anime fetishes.)
Somehow this blog inspired two others.

Before joining AA, I had only seen a few anime that had characters dress up as maids for whatever reason. It wasn't until I watched The Familiar of Zero, one of my favorites, that I met a real maid character, Siesta. Siesta is in fact my favorite maid character, probably of all time. Maids are a practical fetish in my humble opinion. For starters, they call you “master," and that’s always nice. (What am I saying?!) The fetish also has many subtypes. Maids can cover a large demographic of personal tastes. Plus, maid outfits are a fantastic form of fanservice because they are super attractive. ...To some people that is. >_> <_< (////)
Fun fact: the first anime I believe I watched that contained a character that dressed up as a maid also had a Neko maid. *Begins to fantasize but returns to senses* I apologize for that. I'm relieved that I could start this blog off with popular and rather predictable fetish. My fourth one is another popular fetish.
A fetish that is kind of normal. I’ve been a fan of Tsundere females for quite some time. They are kawaii because they are mean at first, but then become sweet. This process makes them appear even sweeter. Originally, I preferred Type A Tsunderes, and yes, there are multiple types of Tsunderes. Type A Tsunderes are mean and violate at first, then they are soft and kind. An example would be Louise from The Familiar of Zero. However, Type B Tsunderes have become my new favorites. Type B Tsunderes are normally sweet, or Deredere. They can become enraged depending if someone or something triggers their anger, normally the love interest. An excellent example of a Type B Tsundere would be Marika from Nisekoi. Other Tsundere types are “Wolf-Girl” Tsundere, Discipline Tsundere, and Tragic Past Tsundere. I would define them, but this blog would somewhat go off topic then. Tsunderes are so great because when they go dere, they become absolutely kawaii.
I'm relieved that I was able to start out with two fetishes that are both popular. That makes me look less like a pervert. However, not to disappoint, my third favorite is somewhat peculiar. It's probably the most abnormal out of the five.
To be clear, do not confuse this to be the same as the Loli fetish.
I've noticed that I've started to greatly like underclassmen girls in anime. ...Why does that sound disturbing all of a sudden? What I mean is- wait, what do I mean? Oh, I know! What I mean is that I like how adorable underclassmen girls appear to be. There's simply something about the way they use the word "Senpai." ...This is becoming worse. How do I explain this properly? In Amagami SS, both Sae and Ai call Junichi "Senpai." Ai is one of my crushes/ waifus. When she calls Junichi "Senpai," I like the way that sounds. Damn it, I basically said the same thing twice. I'm making it sound like I enjoy the idea girls call me Senpai. Well, that doesn't seem like a bad idea actually...
Hmm, I don't know how to describe this. Basically, I enjoy the underclassmen character type. Look back at the girls in my kouhai/ underclassmen edited photo. In that picture are four underclassmen girls that I greatly like. Ai Nanasaki from Amagami SS, who I adore, is an underclassmen. Haru from Nisekoi, who is my second favorite character in the series, is an underclassmen. Kotone and Akari from Nyan Koi, my favorite girls in the anime, are underclassmen characters.
I guess the best way to put this is, girls that are a year younger are hot?
I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. (////) I'm going to skip to the next one before I say something else that's mortifying.
Congrats to Ari/ Lazy Genius. She resulted in the epic conclusion of which dere is my favorite. Tsunderes had been my favorites for a while. Kuuderes were putting up a fight to remove them from power. The conflict in my heart is over. Kuuderes have been declared the winners, while Tsunderes now take their place as second best. When I spot a Kuudere female in an anime, I instantly like her. Looking at her lovely face that shows no emotion… Hearing her sweet, sweet monotone voice that resembles a beautiful serenade...
Look, this is difficult to explain to others. Unless you also like emotionless characters, you might have trouble understanding. I find it fascinating to watch these ladies go from cold and aloof, to warm and loving. That’s only in the case of Type Two Kuuderes. Type Two Kuuderes are cold at first, but warm up as you become closer. Type Two Kuuderes are my favorite type of course, and an example would be Ai Nanasaki from Amagami SS.
That’s four fetishes down, and one to go. I don’t want to know what anyone is imagining, so please don’t tell me, and please stop imagining whatever it is. Have any of the fetishes that I’ve listed thus far been that strange? My biggest fetish is perfectly normal, I assure you.
This should have been foreseeable. The cover photo sort of gave it away. I am not ashamed. If anyone claims they don’t enjoy seeing the occasional panty shot in anime, then they are a liar!
Pantsu are life! I’m sorry if I am becoming out of hand, but I can’t control my love for panties. (I could, but I choose not to.)
This picture actually brings me to an interesting point in which I desire to make. The girl in the third picture asking me if I wanted to see under her skirt is Ai Nanasaki from Amagami SS, my number one anime crush/ waifu. I noticed something interesting about all of my crushes/ waifus. Most of them have long hair. In fact, of my top seven crushes/ waifus, Ai is the only one without long hair. How come Ai, my number one favorite, has this unique trait? This blew my mind when I realized it. Ai is my number one favorite crush because of how she loves to be playful when it comes to showing off her panties! I like Ai for other stuff, sure, but I love it when she talks about the idea of looking up her skirt. Don’t judge me, after all, who was the person who read a blog about a person’s top five anime fetishes? (Who are you to judge?)
Before leaving, I have a question to ask those that read this far.
Wasn't this blog entertaining and not nearly as disturbing as the title sounds? It hurts my feelings that people would believe I would make a creepy blog like this. As to why the self-ridicule, if I had taken this blog in a serious matter instead of light-heartedly, someone else would have mocked me.
Whole day huh? If you want, I might have another blog that's even more messed up.
