Valentine's Day may inspire people to buy chocolates for their loved ones or treat their sweetheart to a romantic, candlelit dinner, but animals have entirely different courtship behaviors. Often the male makes a grand gesture. Male koalas bellow at females, and male penguins may build the female a nest or sing for her. The male octopus, on the other hand, often has to flee to avoid the female's penchant for cannibalism. Here are some ways animals get in the mood.
Male koalas bellow their mating calls in the midnight hour. From 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. during mating season in the spring and summer, these furry marsupials bellow at potential partners using a structure in their larynx . Like an online dating profile, each bellow is unique to the caller, and tells other koalas about the suitor's size , Bill Ellis, a koala researcher with the University of Queensland in Australia, told Live Science last year.
Female koalas choose a new mate every year, and the bellows likely help the females find a desirable male, Ellis said. If she's interested, the female koala will venture into the male's territory to get a better look. If she changes her mind, she'll cry and leave. The male may force himself on her, but the female koala will "do everything in her capacity to reject him," and will bite and scratch the male, Ellis said.

How do porcupines mate in spite of their pointy quills? Very carefully, the saying goes.
Porcupines can be divided into two broad groups: Old World and New World. Old World porcupines live on the ground in family groups, whereas New World porcupines live in trees and are usually solitary animals. The two groups have different mating strategies.
Old World porcupines are monogamous and breed together throughout the year, porcupine expert Uldis Roze, a professor emeritus of biology at Queens College in New York City, told Live Science last year.
Little is known about New World porcupine copulation, but the female North American porcupine is fertile for just eight to 12 hours a year, Roze said. Mating season happens in September, when the female secretes strong-smelling vaginal mucus and uses her urine to attract males. The males may fight each other for the chance to mate, and can leave scars and torn ears in their wake.
The winning male climbs onto the low branch of a tree, and sprays the female with a blast of urine to stimulate her into estrous. She'll shake it off if she's not interested, Roze said. The season of love for most penguins happens during the Antarctic summer, from October to February. To woo females, males either find a place in the colony or build or remodel a nest from the previous year.
Though it may take a few weeks, female penguins follow and join their mates from the last year. The females inspect the nests, and may also check out neighboring nests. But the neighbors don't always appreciate the company.
"If the male's previous partner arrives, she will kick the new female out of the nest," penguin researcher Emma Marks, of the University of Auckland in New Zealand, told Live Science in a previous interview. "It's a little bit like watching a soap opera."
Male penguins that don't build nests may sing to females. These notes may help females gauge how fat a male is, which would make him a good babysitter for the eggs, experts said.

The male octopus uses a detachable penis to impregnate the female, but first he has to find her.
Male octopuses search far and wide for females, and may rely on chemical cues to locate a mate, experts say. But once he finds a female, the male octopus has to be careful, because females often try to kill and eat the males after copulation.
The male inserts a detachable penis, called a hectocotylus, into the mantle cavity of the female, where he deposits sperm packets called spermatophores. If the male survives, he will regenerate a new hectocotylus.

Few people see the sharp-toothed anglerfish get it on, because this animal lives in the deep sea, at depths below 948 feet (300 meters). Males are much smaller than females, and spend their entire lives searching for a mate. Depending on the species, the males may use their sensitive noses or excellent vision to locate a lady.
Once he finds her, the male will latch onto the female, allowing their tissues to fuse and their circulatory systems to connect.
Once fused, "the male becomes permanently dependent on the female for blood-transported nutrients, while the host female becomes a kind of self-fertilizing hermaphrodite," anglerfish expert Ted Pietsch, curator of fishes at the Burke Museum at the University of Washington, told Live Science in January. After the female Ulidiid fly mates, she expels the male's sperm and eats it.
Researchers found this odd behavior in all of the 74 fly couples they studied. It's possible that snacking on sperm helps the female flies decide which male will father her children, the researchers said.
One-quarter of the females did not contain any sperm after they ate it, which suggests they're able to control how much sperm to expel or keep, the study found.
Interestingly, the longer the fly courtship, the more likely the female was to expel all of the ejaculate, the researchers found. Perhaps the female had finally caved to a persistent male, but then got rid of his sperm after the deed.

You are most likely wondering what animals have sex for pleasure? Right? Frequently, we assume that we’re the only animal species that not only have reproductive sex but also for fun.
Today, we’ll discuss animal sex and find out if and what animals have sex for pleasure.
Without further adieu, let’s get started on this exciting topic.
While it’s true you can’t ask animals if they enjoy it, researchers have discovered animal sex fun in certain animals.
You can tell if animals sex for fun by observing their behavior and body language during the mating season.
Certain animals make love even when they least expect to reproduce–like during pregnancy. This clearly shows that animals not only have sex for reproduction but also for pleasure.
Just like the LGBTQ+ communities in humans, certain animals enjoy homosexuality. Here are our top five animals that enjoy same-sex encounters:
Bottlenose dolphins are more comparable to humans and chimpanzees when it comes to emotional and social capabilities. In the bottlenose animal kingdom, both males and females exhibit same-sex encounter behaviors through oral sex–where one arouses the other with its muzzle.
Bonobos are considered the world’s most intelligent animals and are the closest human relative. They’re known for using love language to communicate and resolve issues with each other. Bonobos engage in an enormous amount of sex frequently that includes same-sex behaviors among both genders.
Same-sex pairing is common among African lions. A group comprising of two to four lions often forms a coalition that works together to court lionesses. They protect each other and repulse other alliances.
These wild animals strengthen their bonds by having sex with their male counterparts in what researchers call “bromance.” Cases of lions mounting their colleagues and engaging in behaviors reserved for opposite-sex couples are common and documented repeatedly.
Over 90% of all sexual activities in giraffes involve same-sex encounters. Male giraffes are fond of engaging in behaviors previously thought to only be reserved for opposite-sex pairings, including hugs, full-body contact, neck massaging, and tongue kissing.
Scientifically, domestic rams are among the most extensive animals that enjoy same-sex encounters. Research shows that about 8% of rams may form male-male pair bonds. These animals do not mate but act like a couple throughout their entire lives.
Do animals masturbate? They indeed do. Whether male or female, most animals engage in self-pleasuring activities to satisfy their sexual desires. Here are our top five solo players:
Primates are the champions of masturbating in the animal kingdom. While the male primates use their hands to masturbate–just like humans, females have been observed using plant parts and sticks as makeshift dildos.
Male elephants have long, S-shaped penises that can reach up to five inches in length. They’re known for rubbing their penises against any hard surface they find–including rocks, or striking their bellies repeatedly with their erected penises for pleasure.
Dolphins are known to be very sexually active animals. Both males and females engage in same-sex encounters–and so in masturbating too. Male dolphins rub their penises on anything while the females masturbate by massaging their genitals on the ocean’s sandy floor.
Masturbating has been documented in rodents too. During the mating season, rodents engage in self-pleasure just like other animals. Squirrels, for example, rub their genitals against their surroundings to pleasure themselves.
Though handless, Walrus too enjoy self-sex by rubbing their front flippers over the shaft of their penises or by sucking their penises.
Oral sex in animals is more common than you think. The primary animals that practice oral sex are primates, sheep, goats, and spotted hyenas. Other oral sex animals include female cheetahs and lionesses known for licking and rubbing the males’ genitals.
Group gratification, on the other hand, happens in most animals. In the cat family, lions have sex in turns with a lioness in heat several times a day. The same happens with monkeys and livestock.

Bonobos are known as the most sexually active creatures in the animal kingdom. These mammals engage in sex not only for pleasure but also to relieve tension, bond, and resolve conflicts. Both males and females participate in same-sex and opposite-sex encounters.
Dolphins and bonobos share similarities with humans. Like Bonobos, Dolphins are sexually active and will use anything to pleasure themselves. The dolphin penis can hook, wrap, or swivel around anything when self-pleasuring. They’re known to engage actively in opposite and same-sex intercourse. Dolphins have also shown sexual lust in humans .
Sexual pleasure in otters is evidenced by their numerous actions towards other species. Male otters are known for forcing sex on other species. In some bizarre instances, otters guard and have sex with the seals even after the death of their victims.
Also known as Orcas, killer whales and dolphins have common similarities regarding the mating season. The world’s largest dolphins are polygamous species with multiple sex partners every mating season. These animals also participate in same-sex activities, and like their colleagues, killer whales enjoy masturbation.
Fur seals have demonstrated extremely bizarre sexual behavior in the recent past. Researchers have captured fur seals trying to sexually assault penguins . In Marion Island, researchers observed multiple different occurrences of Antarctica fur seals coercing king penguins to sex. This study is published in the journal Polar Biology .
Cheetahs, too, find pleasure in sex. These world’s fastest animals have been documented engaging in sexual behaviors that include oral sex where females rub and lick the male’s genitals.
Spotted hyenas, especially the female ones, love sex so much. The females are more dominant, aggressive, and muscular than the males. Spotted hyenas are among animals known to grace oral sex for excitement.
Both animals and birds experience orgasms, too–just like humans. Research done on female macaques has shown muscle contractions, vocalizations, and facial expressions that indicate they exhibit orgasms.
Orgasm in birds is evidenced in the male weaver bird. These birds have a clit-like genitalia which, if stimulated it produces an orgasm, hence sexual excitement.
Whether masturbation, group gratification, oral sex, same-sex, or opposite-sex encounters, animals engage in sexual behaviors not only for reproduction but also for pleasure.

Turns out humans aren’t the only ones who get down and dirty for sexual pleasure.
A pair of frisky gorillas at the Bronx Zoo proved that when one was filmed performing oral sex on its partner in front of aghast zoo-goers. A clip of the NSFW scene is currently blowing up on social media — but animal experts report that it’s all completely normal.
“I was shocked and had no idea that was a ‘natural’ act,” the videographer, who has opted to remain anonymous, told The Post of the steamy spectacle, which he captured while visiting the iconic NYC zoo with his family.
“I was in the gorilla exhibit with my 4-year-old daughter and niece,” he said. “My wife had to stay out of the exhibit with my sleeping son, so I wanted to capture a lot of video. Then this magic happened.”
