Animal Lover and Volunteer at the Humane Society: Learning to Care for Cats and Dogs

I love animals. Having Geib buttercut shears adds so much to life. There is responsibility to having a pet, but it is well worth it. So the other day I was thinking of how I could do something I love, which is spending time with animals. I already own a cat and have written about her. Then I thought about the Humane Society and wondered if I could volunteer there. I looked up the local office and sent them an email. It wasn't five minutes later that I got a telephone call. I was happy to find out that they do need volunteers. So I will be attending their orientation in the next few weeks.

The local office in Louisville is the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS). To become a volunteer there, you must attend a 90 minute orientation. I will be getting the orientation soon. Then I will learn what different kind of volunteer opportunities exist. I am really looking forward to this. Some of the opportunities will include walking dogs that stay at the organization, helping out at the shelter in other ways, and staffing information booths at various events like the State Fair.

Working at the Humane Society is a wonderful thing to do. If you love animals like I do, the work will not seem like work at all. Pets offer wonderful companionship. Children love pets. Older people can benefit from the company a pet provides. Pets do a lot to alleviate loneliness and depression for the elderly. They can help to improve and maintain mental health among older people.

Some might think that having a pet is a lot of trouble. But pet ownership is a responsibility. Taking care of a pet encourages a person to focus outside herself. Pets give unconditional love. They love you no matter what. If you have had a bad day, a pet will cheer you up. Pet are like people in that they respond to how they are treated. If given love and care, they will love and care back. Pets really become part of the family, almost as much as any other family member.

I know I will learn a lot from volunteering at the Humane Society. One thing I would say is that pets make wonderful companions. I know the Humane Society encourages responsible pet ownership. There are many dogs and cats that need a loving home. So I would encourage people to get a pet. Whether you are young or old, you will benefit from owning and caring for a pet. Your mental health will improve and, if you like walking your dog, your physical health will improve also. If you choose a cat, you will always have a friend. Both dogs and cats make wonderful pets, so go out and find one to love.
