At its I/O conference in 2019, Google announced that it would be adding augmented reality objects to Search. Over the year since , Google has a bunch of 3D animals you can view in Google Search using AR — here’s the full list that we’re constantly updating.
Google’s AR objects in search are incredibly easy to access. The objects are added to search in the belief that the easiest way to learn about something is to see it. By seeing things in augmented reality (AR), users can see the scale of an object and also details they might not notice from just a simple picture.
To keep this easy to access, Google puts its 3D animals and other AR objects right at the top of search. For example, searching for “tiger” will show a Google Search Knowledge Panel. These panels are often shown for movies, famous celebrities, and other subjects. In the case of a 3D animal through Google, you’ll see an overview of what the animal is, a few images or it, and a section that says “Meet a life-sized tiger up close” and a “View in 3D” button. That button launches the AR experience.
Google’s 3D animals are different on every device. Typically speaking, you might not see AR or 3D objects on a desktop computer or laptop. Rather, you’ll need a supported smartphone to view these objects using Google’s “view in space” option.
The good news? Most modern smartphones are supported ! To view AR objects in Google Search you’ll need:
This includes most popular smartphones, including Samsung Galaxy S8/S9/S10/S20, Note 8/9/10, any Google Pixel smartphone, and other Android devices from LG, Motorola, and other brands. As for Apple devices, iPhone 6S, 7, 8, X, and 11 are all supported as well as most iPads.
How do you access the “view in space” option? After you press “view in 3D,” any supported device will show a “view in your space” button underneath the 3D animal. This can be seen below.
Notably, you can resize the animal from its life-size by pinching on it. Slowly, it will go down in size to better fit into your setting.
If you’re not sure if 3D animals and other AR objects in Google Search will work, just give it a shot!
So, what AR animals can you view on Google Search? For a while, Google didn’t offer an official list, but the viral nature of these objects triggered the company to finally put one up . The list below clearly shows every 3D animal currently available on Google Search. We’ve also gone hands-on with many of them so you can see how they work in action.
Google’s 3D animals, both real and some fictional, include:
There are also over 30 different breeds of dogs on Google’s list including the following:
Google is adding more of these over time, too! This list has expanded since Google originally announced 3D animals in 2019. Google is also expanding the functionality of these panels with video recording tools and quick shortcuts to other animals.
In October 2021, Google added a collection of endangered animals to its list including the adorable arctic fox.
Google also added dinosaurs in a recent update! The full list of prehistoric creatures includes:
Beyond dinosaurs, too, Google also added a collection of insects to this collection with different kinds of beetles, cicadas, and others such as fireflies, grasshoppers, and others. The full list is below.
There’s more than just 3D animals in Google Search. On top of that, Google can also show some other objects. To do this, Google partners with certain websites and brands to show products, furniture, and even the human body in 3D. We’ve listed some examples that are live right now below, and we’ve got another post that goes into more detail on the other objects that are available.
In November 2021, Google quietly added a selection of landmarks from around the globe to its collection of 3D objects. The various buildings, statues, and other monuments adds a whopping 98 more objects to Google’s overall list.
Google has also worked with Biodigital to deliver a handful of 3D experiences, much like the 3D Animals, about the human body with in-depth models of the body’s different systems. The experiences include:
There’s also a host of other body parts that have 3D experiences available, but you’ll need to use specific keywords (which we’ve linked) to access them.
Further, a separate partnership with Visual Body shows off 3D models of cells from different animals all within Google Search. Each model specifically details different portions of the cell in an easy way that teachers may find useful for their students. The different experiences include:
In August, Google once again expanded its collection of 3D objects with molecules that help teach the subject of chemistry. There are 25 new objects, all listed and linked below.
Some of these examples aren’t quite as straightforward as the 3D animals, though, as the 3D models appear lower in search results alongside the websites that power them. From time to time, too, they just won’t appear. The planets, for example, appear more reliably when you add “in depth” to the search query. There are even more objects on the list, too! Those include:
In December 2020 , Google added over 250 models of cars and trucks to search with 3D models. Unlike Google’s 3D animals, these are more advanced with swappable backgrounds when viewing just the 3D model, and even the ability to view the interior of the vehicle in AR. Much of this information is processed off-device and streamed, leading to a higher quality image.
There’s no published list of every supported vehicle yet, but we’ve captured a handful of them below. Realistically, you’re much more likely to find a car that is supported than one that isn’t, but some notable omissions include Tesla vehicles, Nissan Leaf, Subaru Crosstrek, and Toyota Camry.
In April 2021, Google added another set of AR objects to search alongside its 3D animals. The latest batch includes Japanese characters from video games and more. These include the likes of Pac-Man, Gundam, Hello Kitty, Ultraman, and more. The full list follows:

Lions and Tigers and Bears: Capturing Non-Rigid, 3D, Articulated Shape from Images

The 3D movements of a person can be reconstructed based on the recordings of a smartphone or a webcam.

New software makes it possible to generate animated three-dimensional figures of animals from short videos.

These days, animated figures in films and in computer games are often true to life. After all, they are created with sophisticated three-dimensional models of bodies and faces. Christian Theobalt and his colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken are making it much easier for graphic artists to generate such models – enabling applications that were previously inconceivable.

On the basis of a few photos alone, a new technique creates realistic avatars of animals that look and move like real animals.
Filmmakers and developers of computer games will have a new way of animating animals in the future. A team led by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen has developed a technique that uses photographs alone to create lifelike 3D models of almost all quadrupeds. These avatars can be animated to realistically imitate the movements of animals. But the simple method of bringing animals to life on the computer is not only interesting for the entertainment industry. It could also benefit biologists in species protection and help to make children in particular aware of the importance of biodiversity.
“Populating the virtual world with animals used to be a lot of manual work“, says Michael J. Black, director of the Perceiving Systems department at the MPI for Intelligent Systems. Today, animators have to laboriously design 3D animals using graphics software. While there are technologies to create realistic 3D avatars of humans, no such technology is available to automatically capture the shape of wild animals. “You can’t bring a tiger into the lab to be scanned and you can’t take expensive scanners out into nature,” says Black.
The Tübingen researchers' technique uses photos of animals (bottom row) to create 3D models (top row), which can reproduce different postures and whose surface is designed according to the original body cover (middle two rows).
The team, whose technique creates avatars of animals including their fur or skin with reasonable effort, includes scientists from the CNR Institute for Applied Mathematics and Information Technology (IMATI) in Milan and the University of California in Berkeley as well as Max Planck researchers. "Ultimately, 3D animal capture is about reconstructing the 3D structure from 2D images of moving objects captured by various unknown and moving cameras," explains Silvia Zuffi, the lead author on the project from IMATI.
In their new method, the researchers only need a few photos of an animal in different views to calculate realistic models that can then be animated naturally. “You could make a fortune doing this for people’s pets”," says Michael J. Black.
Unlike other approaches, the images from which the avatars are generated can also come from different cameras. The computer program delivers such convincing results because it doesn't start from scratch when it creates a model. “The key is to start with a rough 3D shape model that can explain the shapes of many animals and then refine this based on the observed images,” says Michael Black.
In their current work the researchers demonstrate that their method works for as different animals as a tiger, a bear, a horse or a rhino. "Our algorithm generates realistic models of animals for which no previous 3D models exist," says Silvia Zuffi. For example, the researchers were able to reconstruct the 3D shape of the extinct Tasmanian tiger from low-quality film footage shot the 1930’s.
The researchers now want to make the method fully automated so that it can be run on thousands of images of animals in the wild. Fully automated 3D animal shape capture would not only facilitate the work of game developers and animators but also supports animal conservation. Given photographs of animals captured by camera traps, the method could determine whether their shape, i.e. their weight, has changed. Species conservationists would thus receive quick and reliable statements as to whether endangered animals are doing well.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It's the new face of child pornography: molesters are downloading cartoon images of children having sex with adults. Officers across the Commonwealth, including in Richmond, are actually rescuing children by using these offensive cartoons.
One video law enforcement uses is one of the most downloaded animated child pornography videos on the Internet. A cartoon girl performs a sex act on a man. When it's over, fireworks go off, balloons are released and the man claps.
Possessing this video alone isn't illegal. What is illegal is how you get it and then use it.
"What law enforcement actually knows is animated child pornography is used to groom children," said Camille Cooper. Cooper is with the National Association to Protect Children. She has helped pass laws across the country, including in Virginia, to protect children from child molesters.
"Offenders collect the material, they expose children to it that they want to molest, it lowers the child's inhibitions and it normalizes sex acts," said Cooper. "That's what it's used for and therefore, isn't a victimless crime."
Not everyone agrees with Cooper. At the Virginia Court of Appeals, federal defense attorney Robert Wagner once argued in a landmark case that animated child pornography is and should remain legal.
In 2004, Wagner defended Richmond resident Dwight Whorley. Whorley, a registered sex offender, went to the Virginia Employment Commission office and downloaded 20 cartoon images of female children being forced to have sex with men.
Since he used the Internet to receive the pornography, he was prosecuted under federal law.
"Dwight Whorley got 20 years for that offense and I think that is unconscionable," said Wagner. "In animated child pornography videos, there is no victim and there's no exploitation of children."
Wagner believes animated child pornography isn't dangerous but says the statute his client was prosecuted under is.
"I think that places far too much power on a prosecutor to use this statute to prosecute people who really aren't dangerous," he said.
There is no indication Whorley molested children or used pornography for grooming. Richmond Detective Kevin Hiner says, that isn't always the case.
Hiner says, he uses animated child pornography as a marker.
"If we have a cyber tip come in and we see a lot of animated child porn that is a huge indicator that they are probably looking at real child pornography and that will start our investigative process," Hiner said.
He says the problem is a pandemic, and Richmond isn't immune.
"We've been in every neighborhood, we've been in government housing and some of the nicest neighborhoods in the Metro-Richmond area," Hiner said.
Detective Hiner said, while he and his colleagues won't arrest someone for possessing cartoon kiddie porn alone, officers around the state are being trained to use animated child pornography to protect your kids.
Richmond police say they are backlogged with the number of offenders they need to arrest. However, if someone has access to children and is downloading either type of child pornography, that offender goes to the front of the line so officers have a better chance of rescuing an abused child.
