Angers buying snow
Nearly a dozen children, teenagers and their parents showed up with purple toboggans, red saucers and plastic snowboards, unable to resist what looked like sledding heaven. Thirty-foot mountains of snow, piled as far as the eye could see -- and all right there, in the middle of flat, downtown Lackawanna. Cruz had brought along his brother and cousin, all toting snowboards and completely oblivious to the bright yellow 'Warning! No Trespassing -- Private Property' signs that dotted the perimeter of the snowy landscape. The old Kmart parking lot on Ridge Road has become Lackawanna's newest winter attraction, much to the chagrin of the property's owner, who contends that the city allowed plowing contractors to illegally dump thousands of truckloads of snow on his lot. Welch of the contractors, 'and they told me to get the hell out of there, that this was between the mayor and them. Welch said he has reason to be worried. With young children climbing up steep, hard-packed snow piles, teenagers walking across the roof of the obscured Kmart building, and parents climbing up the slippery banks with their camcorders, he said someone's bound to get hurt. Moreover, Welch said he is meeting with Lackawanna's new charter school organizers next week to discuss using the Ridge Road property as a potential school site. He fears that will be a tough sell if the property is buried in snow or heavily damaged by drifting snow banks and construction machinery. And one of the light poles is bent. Mayor John Kuryak said he knew the property was privately owned and never directed any contractors to dump snow in the old Kmart lot. But he also said he was aware that some city contractors were using the site anyway. He was quick to add that other private contractors not affiliated with the city had also used that lot as a dumping ground and had to be chased off. The mayor was hesitant about assuming responsibility for damage caused to the lot, saying that he hadn't talked personally with the owner and wanted to get all the parties together to discuss what should be done. Montpellier, France Parc des Expositions 29 — 31, January www. First impression: the sheer scale of it! And then the satisfaction of realising how important the organic wine movement has become, not just in France, but in the wider world too, a magnet for professional buyers from all over Europe and North America. Exhibitors are ranged not according to region and country but almost, as it were, placed at random. In that way, you make unexpected discoveries. We find ourselves sandwiched between makers from Chateauneuf du Pape and Sancerre. The level-playing-field ethic also gives everyone the same plain table top with no fancy displays allowed — nothing but a pure interaction between the wine, the maker and the potential buyer. That suits us very well. Keep it neutral, and keep it simple! The wines will do the rest. Plus, the professionals almost certainly know tons more than I do. Fortunately, the wine speaks for itself. Our regular importers swing by to taste our latest vintages, and I begin to build up a picture of this key network of people who take our wine to almost every corner of the globe. We have agents in Australia coals to Newcastle, or what? The warmth of their response to the wines and their eagerness to hear all the latest news from the cellar and vineyards goes beyond mere professional interest — and I find that both unexpected and touching. On day two, it feels as though every caviste in France has beaten a path to Montpellier. Some are regular customers — like expansive Matthias from Weingarage in Zurich, whose existence seems to be one long, joyous party — while others have found their way to our stall through word of mouth. The salon has been a huge success and the order book is bulging. Paul does — I listen attentively.. We reconnect with regular clients, particularly those from the Loire and Paris area. Our own wine-by-the-glass choices range from the frankly swivel-eyed end of the market to the damn near sublime — the world of natural wine is a broad church. The experience of helping Paul has given me a valuable insight into the way Les Clos Perdus positions itself in the market, how wine is bought sold, and the generosity of spirit of so many of the people up and down the chain.
