"Angelica" (CD09061) was recorded on June-July 1989, release in 1989 under Intense Records, a division of Frontline Music Group. - Produced by Dennis Cameron. - Vocal production by Ken Tamplin. - Recorded at The Mixing Lab A. - Engineered by Dave Jahnsen and Eric Kibby. - Mixed by Dave Jahnsen. - Mastered by John Matousek. Here are the personal thoughts of Dennis Cameron about "Angelica": "Angelica started as a vision that I had for an ideal band full of believer musicians. The experience making the first album was to be the "Awakening" for me both as a musician and as a professional. Here's a lesson that I hope any readers can learn from. The first Angelica album was recorded in Costa Mesa, California with the starting line-up of: Andy Lyon, Scott Ernest, Bob Pallen and myself. The finishing line-up for the album was a little different . . . While in the pre-production stage of making the first album, Andy Lyon, the vocalist (more likely from a lack of experience on all our parts) chose to view the the opportunity to prepare for recording with less enthusiasm than the rest of the band. The result being that after a couple of days of having Ken Tamplin push him in his performance (as Ken was hired to produce the vocals on the album) that the singer "burned out". At this point, (as humbling as it is to say) we were in need of a singer to salvage the (what was now being refered to as the Dennis Cameron) project. We now needed to find someone to finish out the album. Ken had suggested two replacements, Bob Carlisle or Rob Rock. Having once been a proud owner and fan of the Driver album (Rudy Sarzo, Tommy Aldridge, Tony MacAlpine and Rob Rock) Rob was the easy pick of the two to best suite the music style. At the time of recording, Rob was in the process of regrouping a new version of Driver and was rehearsing and recording with them as well as doing the session work for Angelica. What a trooper he was! I can remember Rob coming to the sessions with this big red swollen throat saying that he had just come from Driver rehearsals and that he was pumped and ready. Not withholding, Rob would assume his best Iron Maiden pose in the vocal booth and trek on with our sessions. Rob's voice was in a higher range than Andy's, which meant that some of the vocal melodies had to be reworked to fit his voice. For example, the original version of "Shine On Me" melody started on a major 3rd, but was transposed to the 5th for Rob. We finished the album a couple of weeks late due to all the mayhem and I returned home (Ontario, Canada) wondering how I was going to continue with this band under these circumstances." 1. DO NOT ORDER THIS! It's not what you think. I ordered the .mp3 download thinking it was the Christian band Angelica based on the album cover shown. I should have looked at the track listing. THE DIGITAL FILES ARE NOT THE CHRISTIAN BAND ANGELICA! It's some other artist. I wish there was a way I could get my money back. BIG MISTAKE AMAZON!
My first exposure to this band is when a friend posted a video by them on Facebook. From that point on I knew I needed to own this album. Remincent of 80's era heavy metal and hard rock and with veteran vocalist Rob Rock on the mic you couldn't ask for more in a christian Rock band. The album reminds me a lot of early Dokken. Buy it, you won't regret it

Angelica was a musical project of guitarist Dennis Cameron, which lasted from 1989 to 1992. This was their debut album, and the only one to feature vocals by Rob Rock, on all but one track ("Face To Face"). The band have a very 80s commercial hard rock sound, less like Sunset Strip metal and more like the heavier side of Pop metal / AOR. Think 707, Shout, Tamplin, Prophet, Strangeways, Alien, Unruly Child, Stryper, Crystavox, Joshua, Mr. Big, Frehley's Comet, Sammy Hagar, LeMans, The Storm, etc. What sets this album apart - besides the vocals of Mr. Rock - is the incredible guitar work of Dennis Cameron. He is very creative, and has superb technical skills and note phrasing. It's also great that you can actually hear the bass playing of Robert Pallen, which is also excellent. What the album lacked at the time was a bigger production budget. It also lacked a really killer song that would put it over the top. That's not to say the songs here are not good - they're pretty consistent, but not spectacular. Some of the better songs are I Believe, Take Me, SOS, Will I Ever Learn, Danger Zone, and the instrumental called Ahh! Overall, the first two Angelica CDs are recommended if you miss that pure 80s heavy AOR style. Today's AOR is excellent, but it has a more modern kind of sound and production.
I have had this cd for 15 yers now and while for many of them was long out of print. It is highly recommended if you like vocalist Rob Rock (ex-Impellitteri/Solo) This was one of the absolute best produced Christian Metal albums of the late 80's whereas most seemed to lack the punch that most mainstream albums had this on is a sonic blast to your eardrums featuring the awesome shredding of Dennis Cameron. The lyrics are not overly "Jesus Praising" they are more secular in nature but display an overwhelmingly postive tone. Highly recommended! The reason Rob Rock was asked to sing on this release is because the bands vocalist (Andy Lyon) at the time had some severe vocal problems from not singing correctly and producer Ken Tamplin started to record vocals for it himself (One track is still included) and then he decided to ask Rob to finish them as it sounded too much like Tamplin's band at the time (Shout)

Angelica = Opera + Rock
Although I like to listen to classical music like Beethoven, Bach, Paginini and strings orchestra, opera was never my cup of tea. But sometimes, I like some playing on radio or TV not knowing who and what. I'm into Instrumental Rock such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen etc. The albums 'Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar ...' by Yngwie Malmsteen which is strings orchestra led by electric guitar, and 'Sound Theories' by Steve Vai which is mostly horns orchestra led by electric guitar, are damn good albums. You need extra ordinarily brilliant artists to make two different things work like this. And here we have Clif Magness - a song writer and composer, to mix Opera with Rock Guitars long ago in 1997. The guitars are played by Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Steve Stevens and Dweezil Zappa. Honestly speaking, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson are the two names that made me jump to this album. And in one word this album is GOOD. Very good. Damn good. It's not only the guitars but the voices of singers too. It really lifts you up and touches inside sometimes. Here, what it says on the CD cover in Clif Magness' own words - "In theories, the two styles of music, Rock and Opera should be like ships passing in the night. From entirely separate eras, never finding common ground. It only seems natural: the power and the drive of modern pop music and the emotion and abandonment of the operatic voices, juxtaposed against each other creating a new sound to bring in a new audience that is familiar with these timeless melodies that were written for the ages. My hope is that these extraordinary pieces of music awaken the hearts and souls of a new generation of listeners, and perhaps, help those already familiar, to enjoy a new dimension of their old favorites."
