And Who Played The 25th?
Identifying and illuminating live Grateful Dead shows (and shows by band associates) that are unidentified or poorly documented. Will there be any evidence for the 2/19/69 dating other than the tape? I consult because the GD performed the "Celestial Synapse" show upon this day, as reported in Rolling Rock from around this period. 2/19/69, based, I think, in similarities of the tape to the explanation of the Celestial Synapse present. I believe that's jumping the gun a bit, but have usually wondered what, if any, evidence existed for the 2/19/69 dating of the High Country/JG material other than the tape. Good point. There is absolutely no other date. Right now, Matrix dates tend to be approximately right, but often not specifically correct, I believe because of just how tapes were edited down and kept. So, for example, we know that "Mickey And The Hartbeats" (or Jerry Garceeeeah) performed The Matrix in October 1968, but we aren't always certain about which night time is which. Therefore its plausible to suggest that while the show probably took place in February 1969, there is justification to suspect February 19, and that could obviate my issue about whether Hot Tuna or Weird Herald canceled.
My Matrix listing can be annotated that the origin of this date is a SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA Chronicle listing. I am traveling at the moment and do not get access to the Barbs, but will check up on my return. Having taken a look at the barbs out of this home window in February there can be nothing useful. Tunabase has the same listing for February 19 as I do: "Jorma/Jack, Weird Herald (High Country with Jerry Garcia guesting)". I'll dig some more. I noted a reference to a SF Chronicle article about the "Celestial Synapse" show - that would be interesting to observe. Also, evidently 1,500 invites were sent out - why they haven't surfaced at all? I also noticed that Jorma and Jack performed The Bear's Lair on the UC Campus on February 21, two days later, so that it does seem like they were experimenting that week. I'm right now leaning towards High Nation opening among the Hartbeats shows (Feb 24 or 26). If the tape box was dated "Week of 2/19/69", then it would explain the time.
It opens additional questions--do David Nelson play with the Hartbeats? And who performed the 25th? Are you aware whether Abrams (or anyone) has tape of these 2/69 Hartbeats shows? famous guitar players in the world 'm not convinced that the Matrix tape labeling was that arranged. A lot of tapes were edited and/or documented over. There appears to be several tapes (like the Oct 68 Hartbeats tapes)that have become hard to time accurately. Here's my assumption--there's a tape container that says 2-19-69 (ideally with Tuna and Herald), and after numerous edits etc, the High Country tape gets spliced out, and a thoughtful engineer looks at the package and writes "Garcia 2-19-69" on the High Country tape. Somebody dated the display as 2-19-69, and it is not all wrong (High Nation just used guests for a couple months), nonetheless it isn't fine either. There might not have already been a Matrix tape from earlier in the week (no one played, or nobody memorable) so 2-19 might have been the initial 'worthy' event of the week.
I have to give thanks JGMF, easily may contact you that, for the "Celestial Synapse" link. Today - the Matrix Tapes. I could confirm that they exist, that I know who offers them, and physically, I understand where they are. If we get gain access to, and that is clearly a fairly big if, and if we can then identify a few of the "shared" shows, that would be great. My guess is usually we will get a little access to a few of the undocumented shows eventually - and these will serve to full lists more than anything else. Those folks who await the December 1965 Warlocks/Dead show might need to wait just a little longer - but it does of program exist. The finds (of orgasmic proportions) in the Matrix tapes will unlikely become Dead related. Marty's Vault'? A December 1965 Warlocks show? I hope these see the light of day, sometime. They probably aren't commercially viable, so why not just talk about 'em?
Casady, Garcia et al. And JGMF is just good by me, Yellow Shark! Al Kooper, then a staff producer at Columbia, going out in California and jamming at the Matrix. Also, may be the "Chambers" drummer John Chambers? famous solo guitarists was Elvin Bishop's guy (also in We Five and Loading Area at various times). On the 12/24/68 tape, "George Chambers" may also be detailed as the drummer, but I think its John Chambers. That is from a list of Matrix tapes that I have already been proven. Here's the list in chron. Casady, Garcia et al. This, a slightly different list, and a longer list have circulated for some time. September 30, 1966 - I've the Jefferson Airplane at Winterland and The Andrew Staples at The Matrix. October 14/15, 1966 was the weekend that the Jefferson Airplane had been migrating from Signe Anderson to Grace Slick and they were playing at The Fillmore with Big Mama Thornton and Butterfield.
