Anal beads seem—how should I say this?—kinda scary. They look similar to rosary beads, except they're chunkier, and instead of praying with them, you put them in your butt. “Unlike butt plugs or prostate massagers, anal beads are designed to be repeatedly taken out and re-inserted,” says Sammi Cole, sex expert at Lovehoney . Personally, I find it arousing—both physically and psychologically—to have someone pull the anal beads out of me. When you “pop” each ball out by yourself, you know it’s coming, but when someone else pulls out the beads, the element of surprise makes it feel even better.

"Anal beads are a sex toy that offers a great way to get your body used to anal stimulation," Cole says. Typically, they're a series of graduated, conjoined spherical beads with a flared loop or handle at the end. (Seriously, make sure your toy has a flared base if you're putting it up your butt. Otherwise, it may get lost up there, and you'll have to take an embarrassing trip to the emergency room!)

Like with any sex toy you put up your rear end, you want to use a ton of lube. Unlike the vagina, the anus is not self-lubricating. Each set of anal beads will list in their instructions if they’re safe to use with silicone-based lube or not. If you can use silicone-based lube with the toy, you definitely should. Silicone lube is thicker and dries out less quickly, making it ideal for anal play . If it specifically says you can only use water-based lube , then go ahead and apply that liberally to your anus and to the beads.
Anal beads really get up in there, especially if you’re using more than two or three balls. Given how deep anal beads are inserted into your anus and rectum, you should clean out your anus with more than taking a shower. You should use a douche or enema. (If you’ve never cleaned your rectum before, no worries, we got you covered .)
Some anal beads only have three balls, whereas some anal beads come with ten balls. You may think since you’re new to anal beads, it’s worth it to purchase the one with three balls, but honestly, it’s still likely better to get the one with ten. You don’t have to put every single ball inside your anus. You can insert as many as you’d like. Over time, as you get more used to the sensation, you’ll likely want to insert more balls, so it’ll be good you got the anal beads with ten spheres!
Anal play is messy, and we're not just talking about poop. You have to use a lot of lube with anal play, and unless you want to wash your sheets right after playing, it's a lot easier to put a towel down. “Start slowly,” Engle says. “If you’re new to anal beads, it’s best to use beads with ‘graduated sizes,’ meaning they start small and grow in size as you move up.” Start by popping the first small ball in and out to get used to the sensation. “The pelvic floor muscles are incredibly powerful and when we orgasm, our body naturally spasms via these muscles,” says Alicia Sinclair , certified sex educator and founder/CEO of the anal sex toy company, b-Vibe . “Clenching and releasing them consciously (i.e., squeezing your anus), prior to orgasm, not only feels pretty incredible but also intensifies your orgasm.”
The best part of using anal beads with a partner is that you can let them control the beads. “Giving your partner control over how they use the beads on you can be a sexy-ass power play,” Engle says.
Even if you're squeaky clean, you can still easily transfer icky bacteria from your anus to another partner's anus. I've also seen porn where the performer will remove the anal beads and directly put them into her mouth or put them into her vagina. Don't do that! If you plan on putting anal beads in another orifice or plan on sharing anal beads with someone else, put a condom on it and switch condoms before switching holes and partners.
Sinclair suggests that either you or your partner pull out the anal beads right as you’re orgasming. “Pulling anal beads out (gently, please—you’re not starting a lawnmower!), during climax adds a tremendous amount of intensity,” she says. “This can often lead to what people refer to as ‘full body orgasms’ because of the additional sensation during your most intense physical moment.”
Like with any type of anal play, you want to use a ton of lube , Cole says. "Listen to your body, and if anything hurts, stop. Anal play can be very pleasurable when you relax, but you should never feel like you have to ‘push through’ the pain." You should always check in with yourself and your partner along the way to make sure you’re both enjoying the experience.
You need to be careful, otherwise, you'll end up with anal fissures (which are skin tears in and around your anus that are very painful).
"Anal beads can be made of lots of different sex toy materials, but the most common kinds are made from silicone, plastic, PVC, or other flexible materials," Cole says. Warning: if you're using anal beads made of silicone, avoid using silicone lube , because it will erode the toy. Use a water-based lube instead .
Anyone who's interested in trying them out! Anal beads can be used by anyone, regardless of gender, sexual preference, or experience level, Cole explains. While it feels particularly good for people with a prostate, it can also feel great for people with a vulva , too, because through the backdoor, it’s possible to stimulate the so-called G-spot (on the front wall of the vagina) and A-spot (also on the front wall, but closer to the cervix).
Butt plugs are designed for you to put them in and leave them in during masturbation or sex. Prostate massagers are sex toys specifically designed to hit the prostate. That's why they're typically three or so inches in length, and curved at the end. Some prostate massagers you can move in and out, but most, you want to let them sit comfortably inside of you.
With anal beads, the pleasure is derived from the sensation of being filled gradually and then experiencing that euphoric release as each bead gets pulled out. In that regard, anal beads are more "active." There's more movement involved.
As with anything you put inside you or your partner, you should clean your anal beads thoroughly in between uses. "Cleaning it prevents bacteria [from] building, which can cause nasty infections," Cole says.
To clean them, just go ahead and wash them under warm water with soap. You can let them air dry. You don't need a special cleaning product or device.
When it comes to separating low-quality and high-quality anal beads, the key is in the material you choose. "Silicone is a wonderful choice for anal beads because the material is non-porous (making cleaning easier and more effective), and it’s soft enough to keep you comfortable while still firm enough to make penetration easy," Cole says. For safety reasons, you obviously want to look for beads with a ring loop or flared base.
