A fourteen-year old boy in China was killed when a chair he was sitting in exploded. Chunks of metal pierced the boy’s rectum resulting in extensive and fatal bleeding.
This is not the first time such a thing has happened, but it is the first fatality.
The boy was alone when the accident occurred, sitting on his computer chair. Bravely, he managed to make one last phone call to his father despite being in horrific pain. An ambulance was immediately summoned, but it took an hour to get him to the hospital and he died enroute.
The “killer chair” was a common gas-cylinder-based chair the height of which can be altered via a cylinder located at the base of the chair, which contains highly pressurized gas .
Allegedly, energy created by the seat cushion caused the explosion.
The fact that three similar incidents were reported at a hospital in the last month alone, suggests an influx of malfunctioning chairs. Back in 2007, such a chair propelled a metal part into the rear of a 68-year-old man, who suffered a severe wound but survived.
In all of the incidents three factors were implicated:
• Non-nitrogenous gases contaminated the cylinder of the chair.
• Deficient materials in the cylinder reduced the durability of the part.
• The cylinder was not completely airtight.
Although oil-based hydraulic devices are said to be safer, most such chairs on the market today use gas cylinders and the majority of them come from China.
So all you computer workers with adjustable height chairs better watch your butt…
I dare not imagine what sort of pain that would be. Poor kid. Though I do wonder if he was just sitting on the chair, or playing roughly with it. I remember when I was a young kid with a soft, bouncy, spiny, chair that could change height. Then again I'm still a little like that, maybe not now since I'll be paranoid ever more.

Ah, and a new myth is created, it won't be hard to bust this one. These types of chairs physically can not create the pressure needed to explode in any type of fashion, and in no way could create enough force to fatally injure someone.

I hate to think how many of these exact same chairs are for sale in the furniture aisle of Wal-Mart right now.
It doesn't exactly say the chair was manufactored in China, it just hints "a majourity" is made in China.

I hate to imagine the kind of pain that kid must have been in. and then he had all that sharp metal stuff up his @$$ for an hour before he finally died. i will never just plop down on a chair again.
To be fair, when a country makes the majority of the world's products, there are going to be a majority of accidents issuing from that country's products. Pure probability.
Not to mention – if China makes it for cheap, and an American company wants to maximize it's profit, and a consumer wants to buy cheap…who is really to blame here? All three perhaps?

Either he was fappin' or he was having a weeeeee bit too much fun on that chair. Either which way, being anally ruptured by faulty chinese lead-coated american-hating products was his own damn fault. Buy taiwan. Those guys can make chairs.
Poor kid. I'm glad I'm not one of the poor owner of a chair of that kind. God, I'll never touch a computer chair ever again, then I can call myself a suicitefly. But anyway, how the hell is this possible?
