Learn how to harness the power of your butt.
It should be fairly common knowledge (at least to readers of Men's Health ) that people with penises can stimulate the pleasure-inducing prostate gland to create earth-shattering orgasms. But did you know that women can have anal-based orgasms, too?
Yup, anal orgasms are open to anyone down to explore them. If you and your partner are down to unlock a whole new realm of pleasure, you might both want to do some exploratory butt stuff.
Here, we’re going to break down the male and female anatomies that lead to anal orgasms—basically, how the heck these things work—and provide some tips to help you and your partner(s) achieve that monumental climax.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland tucked roughly 2-3 inches inside the anus, between the bladder and rectum. Its main function is to produce fluid that is expelled as part of semen during ejaculation. The prostate is surrounded by thousands of nerve endings that feel very good when stimulated just right. In fact, some people can ejaculate from prostate stimulation alone .
“The parasympathetic nervous system is active during arousal and erection,” explains Michael Ingber , MD, a urologist and urogynecologist at Garden State Urology. “After stimulation of the prostatic nerves, this can result in the activation of the sympathetic nerves, resulting in a powerful orgasm and seminal emission (cum).” Really, the mechanism by which it happens isn’t that important to understand fully. Just know that it feels damn good when stimulated, and you can have a really amazing orgasm.
The prostate—a.k.a. the "P spot"—can be stimulated in a number of ways, Ingber explains. Direct stimulation via manual massage can be done by gently inserting a finger roughly two inches into the rectum. “Make sure your nails are trimmed and that your hands are clean or use a glove,” suggests Ingber. The last thing you want is to actually scratch the inside of your anus with your nails.
If you're lucky enough to have a partner helping you out, just lie on your back and have your partner insert a finger inside you, making a “come hither” motion. Another way to stimulate the prostate is if you’re on your hands and knees. Then have your partner insert their finger gently (make sure to use lots of lubrication) and pressed downwards toward the floor, says Ingber.
There are a few possible ways for people with a vulva to experience an orgasm through their butt.
One possibility is through stimulating the sensitive nerves around the anus, including the pudendal nerve. These nerves tend to be located near the sphincter—which is why rimming can feel so good. We'd recommend blending anal and external clitoral stimulation for a mind-blowing blended orgasm experience.
Another path to anal orgasm involves stimulating parts of the internal clitoris through the back door. The so-called G-spot (on the front wall of the vagina) and A-spot (also on the front wall, but closer to the cervix) are both reachable through anal penetration. It's a good idea to ease into it gradually, starting with external stimulation around the anus, Ingber says: “Work up to a finger, and you can also use toys to help.”
If your partner is enjoying stimulation from a sex toy and/or your fingers, then maybe you can think about inserting your penis. Of course, always use a lot of lube— silicone lube is typically better for anal sex because it’s thicker—and go slowly . And remember, if your partner is into it, keep the external clitoral stimulation coming, whether it's via a toy or your fingers.

It's like a regular orgasm on steroids, mmk?
Much like an assortment of chocolates, orgasms come in all different shapes and sizes. Stimulating different parts of your body can result in a variety of orgasmic sensations, and one of those parts of the body just so happens to be the booty.
"An anal orgasm is an orgasm that results from stimulation of the butt cheeks, anal opening, rectum, and prostate (if present),” says Kait Scalisi , MPH, certified sex educator and founder of Passion by Kait . “There are countless ways to stimulate the butt that could lead to the experience of orgasm and every body experiences sensation and pleasure differently.”
So when you're ready to take your orgasm to new heights ( orrrr holes—sorry!), here are the very best tips for achieving an anal orgasm.
Just like any other sort of orgasm, getting out of your own head is key to achieving an anal orgasm. “If you're running a script in your mind about the pain you're going to experience during anal sex, then that's probably exactly how you will experience it," says pleasure coach Tyomi Morgan .
Remember that you have power over your pleasure and over your anus, so be conscious of how your anus is responding to your partner's touches and control the relaxation of your anal sphincter muscles by relaxing. "The more you can release the idea of your anus being a forbidden, dirty place, the easier it will be to relax into the pleasure of anal stimulation without shame," says Morgan.
2. Lube is your lifeline—and so essential!
Any sort of anal penetration will not be enjoyable without any sort of lubrication. “When you think you've used enough, add a little more! The booty doesn't produce any lube on its own," says Scalisi. And lube not only protects you from irritation and small tears, it also heightens the sensation from every lick, stroke, and thrust.
So how do you go about applying the lube to your anal area? Insert lube into the anus using a lube tube, or apply the lubricant to the outside of the anus and onto the surface of your toy or partner's peen,” explains Morgan.
3. Start by practicing with fingers and finger-sized toys.
When it comes to anal penetration, it’s best to start small. “Use fingers and toys that are ‘finger width’ to introduce stimulation to the anus,” suggests Morgan. “Sometimes friction on the opening of the anus can be enough to produce orgasms.
Massaging the anus with the tip of any finger (index or thumbs are typical) creates ease in being penetrated without the idea of having to receive the fullness of your partner's girth. More fingers can be added if you feel you're ready for more pressure.
Communication is the key to pretty much everything, and anal sex is no exception. “Be vocal about what you are feeling and what you need," says Morgan. As the person being penetrated, you should be communicating often since your partner can not feel what you are experiencing. So, if something feels uncomfortable, let it be known in a gentle way. "Make requests of your partner and be patient because anal penetration can take some time to get it right,” advises Morgan.
Morgan suggests saying things like “can you ease in more slowly please?” and insists that mustering the courage to be vocal about your desires is key in achieving orgasm. "The more you speak up and ask for what you need, the more empowered you will feel over your body,” she explains. “With empowerment comes liberation and the ability to RELAX into the decisions you're making knowing that your safety is pleasure is being placed as a priority.”
5. Pay a little extra attention to the butthole.
Think of the butthole as the clit or the G-Spot of the anus. “The majority of the nerve endings are around the anal opening,” says Scalisi. “Focus there, whether you're using your fingers, mouth, or a vibrator. If using a toy, only put ones in the butt that have a flared base—called a flange—so they don't get lost up there.”
Even if you don’t think you hold your breath during sex, there’s still a pretty big chance you’re doing it. “Be aware of your breathing during your anal experience and remember to breathe deeply and send that breath down to your anus,” says Morgan.
Take deep breaths and allow your body to relax into the feeling of anal stimulation, without judgment. Observe how your anal sphincters become looser and more willing to allow your partner to enter. The more you breathe and relax into the stimulation, the easier it will become for you to reach orgasm says Morgan.
“When you tighten or pull in your anus, the sphincters are fully engaged and will not allow penetration to occur. When you relax your sphincters and let your anus ‘hang out,’ the force created by the sphincters is reduced, allowing your partner to come in without resistance.
Training your sphincters to relax is the key to anal pleasure. Your sphincters will naturally have the response of tightening as your partner penetrates deeper, and when you feel that happening, breathe deeper, relax, and let it go. Anal plugs can assist with training your sphincters to relax, so don't be afraid to let go and experience your anal orgasm.
8. Combine anal with vaginal or penile stimulation.
As if anal orgasms weren’t great enough on their own, Scalisi says there’s a way to up your pleasure even more . “Put a butt plug or anal beads in during other forms of sex play, whether that's intercourse, oral sex, or hand play, and pull it out as the person experiences orgasm to double their pleasure,” she suggests. “That's because the pudendal nerve, which runs through the clitoris and tip of the penis, also has a branch that goes through through the anus. If the receiver has a prostate, look for a plug that is curved down to massage it.”
So, how do you know if you’ve actually made it to the finish line and achieved an anal orgasm?
Well, it feels a lot like every other kind of orgasm. “With anal play, you'll experience a build-up of tension accompanied by an increase in heart rate and breathing,” explains Scalisi. “During the experience of orgasm, there's often a sensation of release as well as fluttering of the pelvic floor muscles. Yes, the same muscles that get discussed for childbirth and peeing also run through the anus.”
Here’s to experiencing all the orgasms ladies, you are worth it!

Handy: a graph has charted out the most reliable way to give women orgasms.
In 2009, the National Survey of Sex and Behaviour asked 1,931 US adults aged 18 to 59 about their most recent sexual experiences.
They found a major orgasm gap between the genders, with men achieving orgasms 91% of the time they had sex, versus 64% of the time for women.
Interestingly enough, there was also a gap in the perception of orgasms. 85% of men said that their female partner had orgasmed – a significantly higher number than the percentage of women who confirmed that they actually had.
Which means that a lot of women are probably faking it.
The study also took a look at the types of sex the people engaged in, and noted which ones resulted in orgasm most frequently.
FiveThirtyEight has now turned that data into a handy chart, which shows exactly which sex acts are coming out on top (pun intended).
The data for men’s orgasms is on there, too, but given that men orgasm around 90% of the time regardless of type of sex, let’s just put that to one side.
To everyone’s shock and amazement, the number one sex act which reliably caused female orgasms was receiving anal sex, with 94% of women achieving orgasm when they partook in anal.
AKA the number one sex act men are always banging on about.
But men: don’t start reaching for the lube and confidently telling women that anal is the BEST way for them to achieve orgasm just yet.
The figure isn’t exactly an accurate representation of the most effective sex, orgasm-wise.
Only 31 of the women surveyed actually took part in anal sex, significantly reducing the size of the study’s anal sex related data sample.
It’s also possible that women who try anal sex are more open to trying different sexual acts, and may be more confident in bed, which might add to their abilities to achieve orgasm more reliably.
Or, anal sex might be happening with more build-up, increasing its orgasmic power.
Or anal is most likely to be accompanied by clitoral stimulation, which is more likely to have led to the orgasm.
There’s a LOAD of factors involved.
But if you do want a more reliable way to get women climaxing all over the place, one other crucial stat the study revealed is the importance of changing it up in bed.
Women were more likely to achieve orgasm as the number of different sexual acts increased.
So it’s a good idea to mix up regular penetrative sex with oral and other fun stuff.
Both men and women who experienced five different sexual acts in one session reported an orgasm rate of more than 89%.
But let’s end this on an important reminder: EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.
What works for one person does very little for another, and while the percentage of women who managed to orgasm while receiving anal sex might rave about its greatness, there are plenty of women who just don’t like it.
Try lots of things that interest you, and be open to new stuff.
