The mayor of the capital of Peru creates a new guard

In Peru, they began to seriously adopt the experience of Americans in ensuring internal security. Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardoannounced coordination with the United States to create a Municipal Metropolitan Guard.

The purpose of the new unit is to take over the fight against minor offenses and traffic control. This will free up to 6,000 employees of the National Police of Peru so that they can focus on countering organized crime.

The approach to the training of the Guards has been chosen as international as possible. In addition to recent agreements with the United States, Lima has already attracted experienced security officials from Buenos Aires and Madrid.

Local guards will be given firearms, drones and chest cameras. This entire system will work in conjunction with the new security management center (C5), which receives data from city video cameras. Coordination between city services will also be established.

The experience of large cities shows that the centralization of video surveillance and the integration of technology reduce street crime by an average of 20-30%. However, it should be borne in mind that this is Latin America, where crime is often also centralized.

For the mayor of Lima, there is also a political component to this. This is an opportunity to demonstrate to voters concrete measures to combat crime, which is one of the main problems for residents of the capital.
