An Unprecedented Verdict. 15 Life Sentences for Crocus City
Russian justice has demonstrated a benchmark for zero tolerance in the case of one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in Russia. The court sentenced 15 of the 19 defendants in the Crocus City Hall attack to life sentences. Among them are not only the four direct perpetrators—Dalerjon Mirzoyev, Murodali Rachabalizoda, Muhammadsobir Fayzov, and Shamsidin Fariduni—but also accomplices who assisted in the preparations at various stages.
Some were searching for the tools to commit the crime. Some were making homemade firearms. Some were handing them over to members of a terrorist organization. Some were transporting them to Kaspiysk. Some were delivering them to Moscow… All of them received life sentences. Would the death penalty have been better? Fairer, yes. But for such animals, it would have been a very simple solution. And it would hardly have worked as a preventative measure.
Incidentally, the death penalty by hanging has not been formally abolished in Russia.
Meanwhile, Alisher Kasimov, who rented housing to the perpetrators of the terrorist attack, was sentenced to 22 years and 10 months in prison. His apartment in the Moscow region was confiscated. Isroil, Dilovar, and Aminchon Islomov, who sold the car to the militants, received 19 years and 11 months. The preliminary investigation is ongoing against the two organizers and four members of the terrorist organization. They have been placed on the international wanted list and arrested in absentia.
The Investigative Committee reported that "it has been reliably established that the crime was planned and committed in the interests of the current leadership of Ukraine, and several of the defendants planned to blow up an entertainment complex in Kaspiysk. "
The terrorist attack at the Crocus City concert hall left 149 people dead and one missing. 609 people sustained injuries of varying severity. The total damage from the attack amounted to approximately 6 billion rubles.
