An Open Letter to Hong Kongers -- From a Brother on Remand

Guardians of Hong Kong

To my brothers and sisters of Hong Kong, I wish you a happy and peaceful Lunar New Year. May glory be to Hong Kong in the new year. May justice be done.

The Movement is dying down

Although I am locked up in Pik Uk Prison, I can still catch a glimpse of the outside world through my family, friends and television. From these fragments of images, conversations and words, I can infer one thing that has happened -- outside of this prison, things are quieting down.

I am not addicted to protests. I do not insist on a certain mode of valiant protesting. But what I want to say is this: Do NOT stop. Don't think you can get anything in exchange by quieting down . Apart from failure, there is nothing else to gain from quieting down.

The Revolution of Our Time

I have been on remand for almost 3 weeks since I was arrested. I have no regrets - the same goes for the comrades I know who are detained in the same cell. Yet, we have sacrificed everything (family, education, career and even our future) to ensure the survival of Hong Kongers (more accurately the Hong Kong race). We are betting on the awakening of my fellow Hong Kongers. We hope our offspring will not need to go to jail. We are willing to do it first for them. When we get out of jail, we have to count on you guys outside.

It is called "The Revolution of Our Time" because this is a test that has never been seen in the history of Hong Kong. It is not just one group (a social class or a race) against another group. This is time we have every man and woman of this generation in a revolt. To fight against our own youth, against the things they have created in the past (whether intentionally or unintentionally).

Some time ago, a great person had a great plan : compose a great song for Hong Kongers - a fugue, a pastoral song named "One Country, Two Systems”. With this song in the background, everyone was supposed to live in absolute harmony and the majority of people welcomed it, clapping their hands. However, this great song and great plan took on a life of its own. It does not care about the people any more. They try to call on it, criticize it and chase it, like Milan Kundera once said - “chasing the great dream”. This is the nature of the revolution of our time - to revolt against our past and to atone for our past action (or inaction).

A new Identity - The Hong Kong Race

In this fight against our past and in chasing the great dream, we found our new identity - the Hong Kong race rises in hardship and stands in difficulties.

This race is not identified by bloodlines or language, but by other things we share in common. Living in this era, we were born in times of hardship. We share the same values of this era - we desire democracy, tolerance, human rights and the rule of law. This set of values will never be understood by other races (such as the neighbouring "great nation"). The most concrete example would be the Five Demands embraced by the Hong Kong race, while “patriotic” Chinese are screaming for “a stop to the violence and chaos".

I do not hate China. I am glad to have met some open-minded Chinese people. However, it is sad to say that 99.99% of mainland Chinese do not share the same values with the Hong Kong race. This is why the Hong Kong race is destined to be another race, different from the Chinese. There is no hatred. There is no emotion. It is just a pitiful reality. Hong Kongers and Chinese are not the same race any more and they cannot be together. The current government ruling the Hong Kong race is authorised by outsiders. Because of that, we need to fight against this regime which was chosen for us.

New Ways of Fighting

To establish the foundation of the Hong Kong race, we need to continue the revolt and to expand the Yellow Economy Circle. To force the colonists to tear up the musical score of this great song and to proclaim the failure of the great plan. These actions are a type of “litost“(sorry, I have been reading a lot of Milan Kundera lately and am using what I have learned). It means refusing to compromise and accept the many choices that are all doomed to failure; and using self-destructive ways to defeat your opponent. In Cantonese, we call this "Laam Chao" (攬炒).

We need to expand the Yellow Economy Circle to form the foundation of a long lasting race. To fight the colonists, we need to regain dominance in society. We need to push the enemy from the core to the edge, and then expel them altogether from society. Doing so requires economic power. Building the Yellow Economy Circle can help cast the colonists aside. At the same time, putting our brothers and sisters in important positions in different fields at the “nut-and-bolt level” can prevent the colonists from infiltrating again. The "New Trade Union Wave" and "Two Million, Three Strikes (in education, market and work)" are strategies that are as important as the Yellow Economy Circle.

We are at war

Some may think the revolution of our time is just a political protest. That there is no need to fight till one side is defeated. This thought is extremely dangerous. From the second half of 2019 onwards, the revolution of our time has been about the life and death of the Hong Kong race.

In a war, there is no mercy. The same holds when it comes to the survival of a race - it is a matter of life and death. Our enemies rape and kill our daughters and sons, kidnap them to unknown locations and force us to believe their ridiculous lies. At this stage, are we still considering whether we should be kind to our enemy? It is not about being noble. We cannot be like Duke Xiang of Song (who was kind to his enemies and would not kill them while they were crossing the river. In the end, he lost the war.) It would be the biggest humiliation to the Hong Kong race, especially the brothers and sisters who sacrificed on our behalf.

I have to apologise. You maybe hoping to hear some words of encouragement from me. However, what I have to say is the heart-wrenching truth - the new born Hong Kong race is facing death. This is not reality yet and is not unpreventable. But it is an extremely probable outcome.

Long Live, Hong Kong

If we give up now and allow the revolution to disappear from our memory, we will all face the same fate - our past will not exist again. Our memory will be taken away. Our books, culture and history will be destroyed. Others will rewrite our book, give us a new culture and new history. Then our race will slowly forget our present and our past. Our name will disappear - our name is the continuation of our past.

Will the new born Hong Kong race safely cross this man-made desert - a desert that makes us forget our past? I don't know. Yet, I am willing to believe in the potential of the Hong Kong race - a race that is willing to enlighten itself will not easily forget its past.

I have written so much already, there is not much more to say. I apologize if I did not express myself clearly. I cannot say the new year will definitely be better than 2019, but it certainly cannot be worse than 2019. I wish you all peace and good health in the new year. Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our time. See you under the "wok" (LegCo building).

May glory be to Hong Kong!
