The bizarre, unique films spawned by the partnership between American born, Bolivia based, actress and visionary Amy Hesketh and director Jac Avila fell onto my radar a few years ago via a writer/producer friend. After having my mind gently blown by the duo’s sado-masochistic melodrama MALEFICARUM, I commissioned a feature interview in the pages of FANGORIA and a pleasant virtual friendship with Hesketh ensued.
Hesketh is the real deal. A ferocious talent whose love of cinema, underground and otherwise, informs these beautiful, brutal erotic/art genre pieces and she often puts herself in dangerous physical situations in order the achieve the desired effect.
And while the Hesketh written/directed vampire drama OLALLA (that one co- starring Avila) does the festival circuit, the duo are whipped-torso deep in their latest effort, an explicit and surreal take on the Marquis De Sade classic JUSTINE (OR THE MISFORTUNES OF VIRTUE).
Hesketh has kindly supplied us with some eye-catching behind the scenes shots as well as some delicious official stills. Bear (bare?) in mind…these shots are by and large NOT SAFE FOR WORK .
“All the characters in De Sade’s books are extreme expressions of conflicting views of life, death, love, sex, God. Faithful to the spirit of the book while using it as a springboard for a more cinematic interpretation of the story Jac takes Justine, who represents extreme virtue to match her against Rodin, who is the perfect embodiment of the extreme evil zealot.
Using most of the story as the source Jac Avila’s version turns the end of the famous story completely on its head, using Rodin and his dramatic arch, to accomplish that end and by condensing the story and taking those parts that best narrate Justine’s tribulations, Jac presents a very intense, violent and sexy film with a totally outrageous ending.”
While JUSTINE is in-production, Avila and Hesketh are still hoping to raise a few more dollars to make their mad, beautiful opus as opulent as possible.”

Amy will require students to produce projects without teaching the tools and knowledge needed to 1. Complete the project, and 2. Enjoy the process. Amy constantly tells her students that she is available to help them, but when specifically asked, her response is that she "Isn't on Contract" which has become her mantra. CAUTION: HOLDS GRUDGES

Amy says that she is a Filmmaker first and a Teacher second. She is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about film tech and loves to talk about it. I've taken multiple Film classes and my favorites are usually Amy's. Very communicative, very professional, and very friendly. Show enthusiasm and interest and you're golden.

Deadly Beauty: Horror’s Scream Queens and Rising Talent: Amy Hesketh
“The horror genre, like its spiritual cousin, rock ‘n’ roll, often suffers through long creative droughts until something ferocious and original suddenly pops up and renews your faith all over again. If you’ve been feeling a similar dry spell, the films of Amy Hesketh might be the shot of no-budget adrenaline you need. A talented director, actress, writer, and producer, Hesketh tackles subjects like the Inquisition and the story of Bluebeard, while packing in more violence, nudity and nihilism than any major film would dare. She’s also willing to risk it all for her art, including enduring weeks of being stripped, suspended and beaten while playing the lead role in Jac Avila’s Inquisition drama Maleficarum. But what’s truly surprising is that this expatriate American is doing it all in the remote mountains of Bolivia.”*
1. How did you get into the industry?
I was traveling in South America and responded to a casting call for a National Geographic documentary being produced by Jac Avila in Beni, Bolivia. A few weeks after shooting, I saw Jac’s film Martyr in a film festival in Oruro, Bolivia. I liked the film so much that we became business partners, and have been making films together ever since.
2. What Scream Queen inspired you most?
Barbara Steele. Her repertoire is great, and she worked with Fellini. Two others are Soledad Miranda and Lina Romay.
3. What are the next couple projects you are working on?
We just released Dead But Dreaming (Muerta Pero Soñando), the first vampire film ever made in Bolivia, to theaters here. Soon, the international DVD/VOD release of the movie will be out. It’s very intense and dark, no sparkly vampires for us! We just started pre-production for the next film in the Dead But Dreaming vampire trilogy, and, simultaneously, my fourth film as director, Olalla, based on the Robert Louis Stevenson story, about a family of vampires. Olalla will also be dark and disturbing, like most of my films…
