Popularity is everything; breakups and missed jump-shots are the end of the world; a college acceptance is a dream come true; and an email forwarded to the wrong person is your worst nightmare. Now experience senior year of high school through the eyes of five real-life Indiana teenagers: the Prom Queen, the Heartthrob, the Jock, the Rebel and the Geek.

American Teen is a wonderful documentary about five Seniors, two girls and three boys, and how they deal with the rigors of academia at Warsaw (Indiana) Community High School in Warsaw, Indiana, a conservative Midwestern community. It follows them as they deal with such issues as getting scholarships, sexting, and relating to one another and the adults in their lives. I do find it difficult to believe that they would be entirely themselves with cameras following them around constantly. Still, their stories are interesting even heartbreaking like when "Queen Bee" Megan weeps over her sister who died a couple of years earlier; or, as we follow Hannah in her struggle with depression. While some of it may seem contrived to some, I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see what high school life is like for a middle-American teen.
Seemed like an honest portrayal of American teenagers at a specific point in their lives. I was disappointed that others teens who played major roles in the movie, while not the focus if the movie, were not filled up with. Specifically, I'd like to know what happened with the best friend and with the topless photo girl. They played significant roles in the movie but didn't get the same follow up as the main players.
Over all it was a great portrayal of the everyday stories of teenagers from a white middle America, middle class perspective. What it neglects, however is the other at least 60% of American teenagers of different race and/or socioeconomic standing.
A snapshot at best, but a very well done one.
Required movie for a college course. Was fairly entertaining, kind of slow at points. Overall good movie!
Showed this to a group of teens and they enjoyed watching and discussing the similarities to their life experiences. There is a lot of profanity, but no more than you would here when observing teens. There is also some sexual content that pushes the limit for PG-13 but overall it is a great look into the reality of being a teenager in America.
I had to watch this for schools and actually found it to be a little interesting. The teens were kind of snobby but the major points came across.
Showed this to a Documentary Video class. Everyone loved it, however I'm glad I'm no longer a teen...
Watched this for a college paper. It was a good reminder of the complex teen years.
A well produced documentary with good storytelling. It brought back memories of my senior year in high school. The teenaged years can be pretty tough. I definitely don't miss those days.

Much of the movie was filmed at Warsaw Community High School in Warsaw, Indiana. Director Nanette Burstein originally reviewed more than 100 different schools in the pre-production process, and ten schools replied, agreeing to participate. After she interviewed incoming seniors at all 10, she chose Warsaw.[3]
This documentary circles on the lives of five typical senior high students in a small town in Indiana--a heartthrob, an artist, a jock, a geek, and a popular girl. Filmed every day for 10 months, this documentary captures their inner workings and uncovers their insecurities, heartbreaks, struggles, cliques they belong to and deal with their weaknesses, and their fears about life beyond senior high.
Some film critics have accused the director, Nanette Burstein, of giving the documentary a sensationalized feel,[7] and others have gone so far as to claim that the film feels scripted and the very presence of the cameras take the reality out of the situation. One continual issue with the movie, was that Tusing was continually forced to "get a girlfriend" in order not to be removed from the film. Other issues include scripted arguments, and cue cards.[citation needed]
