American Horror Story Hotel Sex Scene
Now Reading The AHS: Hotel Rape Scene Went Way Too Far
Believe it or not, Ryan Murphy warned us about the extremely disturbing rape scene that occurred about 25 minutes into the premiere of American Horror Story: Hotel back in August. He announced during a TCA panel that the anal rape of Max Greenfield's junkie character with a spiky conical dildo (yup, that happened in full, graphic detail, and it was every bit as horrifying to watch as it sounds) was "the most disturbing scene we’ve ever done." But, Murphy saw a purpose for it.
He calls the blank-faced creature doing the penetrating "The Addiction Demon." It's this season's answer to Season 1's Rubber Man, Asylum' s Bloody Face, and Freak Show 's Twisty the Clown.
AHS: Hotel , you see, is all about the various addictions people face, with Hotel Cortez being the sort of flophouse where lost souls go to deal with addictions to sex, eternal youth, drugs, alcohol, and even blood. For Murphy, showing Greenfield's heroin-addled character being assaulted with a pointy metal strap-on by the demon is a metaphorical representation of the terrible hold the drug has over addicts.
Yeah, I'm going to have to throw a flag on the field for that one.
Heroin is, of course, a terrible drug with tragic effects. The CDC has reported a "dramatic rise" in heroin-related deaths in the United States since 2000. Still, there are subtler ways to get this point across. So You Think You Can Dance did it powerfully and evocatively with this routine . No one's going to think AHS: Hotel is glamorizing heroin usage if a junkie doesn't get brutally sexually assaulted in the throes of a high. We get it, Ryan Murphy; heroin is no bueno .
Also, to work the ol' feminist/humanist angle: if that rape scene had happened to a female character — or even a straight male one — the internet would be losing its collective mind right now. "It's fun to cast a comedy actor in a brutal gay rape scene because gay rape is funny," Vanity Fair 's Richard Lawson tweeted last night. It's definitely something to think about.
Other AHS: Hotel viewers also chimed in to voice their disappointment with the scene.
"Why do people always gotta use rape as shock value?" @artheauxs tweeted .
" AHS: Hotel is less than entertaining. Also rape... This is the last episode I ever watch of AHS . I will not support this," @thenicolescape wrote .
User @itgurl_29 brought up a much larger problem with this season of the show: "This is the most stomach turning season opener yet. And the most boring. There's no plot, just gore and rape. SMH."
Last night's AHS episode merely seemed to hop from shock-value incident to shock-value incident. It felt like we were watching performance art in which couture-clad characters moved from orgies to shooting heroin to getting anally penetrated with spires. Meanwhile, towheaded Children of the Corn, who appear to live in a dream game room somewhere in the Cortez, hang out eating candy all the time (I assume there's an on-site dentist). There wasn't really a through-line or much plot at all. Just attractive people succumbing to their addictions in very decorous settings.
Listen, I like seeing Matt Bomer's butt as much as the next person with eyes, but there's at least got to be some semblance of a reason for it to be flailing about. Otherwise, we're just watching softcore porn. Again, softcore porn is fine, but don't pretend it's an episode of American Horror Story .
And please, no more anal rapes with unicorn-horn dildos as metaphors for heroin addiction — or anything else. It's not provocative; it's stunt outrage, and kind of disrespectful to anyone who's actually battled a heroin problem (or survived sexual assault, for that matter). As far as laying the groundwork for the season to come, this premiere didn't set AHS off to a great start.

From murder to ghosts to vampires, the cast of “ American Horror Story: Hotel ” has faced plenty of scary subjects. But a sex scene with Lady Gaga ? That’s a whole new brand of fear.
“Being in a sexual situation with the Countess, having to sign a nudity waiver about how it was going to go, that was the scariest [moment],” laughed Angela Bassett, whose character, Ramona, had a romantic relationship with Lady Gaga’s the Countess.
The cast of FX’s horror anthology spoke to reporters on the set of the show Wednesday, talking about their real-life fears and shooting this particular dark — and sexy — season of “American Horror Story.” And they all have different ways of dealing with all of that.
Bassett, for instance, said Gaga told her to feel at ease for their steamy scene, and they’re even able to joke about it now. In fact, Bassett revealed that Gaga got her a cake for her birthday, and the cake topper was of the two of them having sex.
Denis O’Hare, who plays Liz Taylor, also had to jump into unfamiliar sexual territory this season.
“I had a sex scene this year, my first one ever, which I was terrified by because I’m a character actor,” he said. “I’m not called upon to flash some ass, and that was uncomfortable for me. I tried to make sure my sex partner was always blocking me.”
Everyone at least agreed that they didn’t have to be nervous when working with Lady Gaga, as she was cited as down-to-earth and even had a cast party at her home before the season kicked off, complete with a red-dyed pool. Still, they know what a megastar they have in their scene partner.
“It’s interesting because you don’t realize what a huge cultural figure you’re working with. I haven’t said anything about Lady Gaga to them,” Matt Bomer , who plays Donovan, said, talking about his young children. “They’ve seen pictures that have been taken that are candid, but they just think it’s an actress. And someone from their class at school has told them, so they come home now and go, ‘What’s Lady Gaga like?’ And they don’t know who she is necessarily, it’s just playground lore. So I’m like, ‘Oh my god, am I cool?'”
As far as the non-sexual fears go, the actors agree that “AHS” has tapped into something more psychological than the typical work of horror. Cheyenne Jackson , for instance, who plays Will Drake, said the child abduction aspect of the plot is the scariest part.
“I think it’s every parent’s worst nightmare.” he said. “That to me is scarier than any dead body sewn into a mattress. I really think Ryan’s tapped into some deep, dark fears there.”
“It’s my biggest fear,” Wes Bentley, who plays Detective John Lowe, whose son is abducted and turned into a vampire, admitted. “My son asks me all the time if I’m afraid of stuff, because we talk about being afraid of the dark. And he asked me, ‘What are you afraid of, Daddy?’ And I can’t tell him because my fear is everything that has to do with him or his sister.”
However, some of them have more topical fears: “What keeps me up at night? Donald Trump,” laughed Jackson.
Others discussed more traditional fears. Ironically, Sarah Paulson , who portrays a ghost in Sally this season, wants nothing to do with spirits.
“I don’t like them,” she said adamantly. “I don’t like to think that they’re around. I’m not interested in them at all. I want nothing to do with ghosts.”
Kathy Bates , who stars as Iris, agreed that “American Horror Story” taps into a much darker side of human nature, and so much of the audience can see some of their problems reflected on the screen.
“I think there’s bad in all of us, and a dark side in all of us,” she said. “Everybody has a dark or sad or tragic thing that’s happened to them and we’re so intent on keeping those things to ourselves and not telling other people about them, because you don’t want to be a downer and all that stuff. But it always surprises me that we all think that we’re the only ones who have those problems, when in fact we all share them, and then we all gather in front of a screen to see the same people sharing similar problems.”
For O’Hare, the fear was very personal, as he plays the very feminine Liz — something he’s avoided for a long time.
“I am a 53-year-old gay man who had to come out in the ’80s, when it wasn’t fashionable. I was a Catholic, so I had a very, very painful experience with being gay,” he explained. “This role was sort of putting the finger directly in that wound and forcing me to confront that.”
The show was renewed for a sixth installment earlier this week, and most everyone agreed they would be game to return if they got the call from show creator Ryan Murphy. But what kinds of characters would they like to play?
“I think I’d maybe like to play more of a villain,” said Chloe Sevigny . “I think that would be fun.”
“Maybe some kind of handicapped [character] or something,” said Evan Peters , who plays the villainous Mr. March in “Hotel.” “That’d be interesting to try to challenge myself to play.”
“I think anything I would come up with would just sort of be really boring in comparison to what Ryan comes up with,” Paulson laughed.
“American Horror Story: Hotel” airs at 10 p.m. PST/EST Wednesdays on FX.

Despite American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy warning the world about the extremely graphic rape scene that went down 25 minutes into the premiere of American Horror Story: Hotel – calling it the “most disturbing scene we’ve ever done” – *nobody* was prepared for that shit.
If you missed last night’s ep (which you probably did because it doesn’t air in Australia until October 12, on ELEVEN), we’re talking about the 3-minute anal rape of Max Greenfield ‘s junkie character Gabriel by a demon wearing a spiky metal dildo.
It’s full-on. It’s gross. It’s fucking horrifying.
Even worse is Sarah Paulson ‘s character, Sally (a dead addict) whispering “the more you scream, the more he likes it” to Gabriel as he’s being assaulted.
Murphy reckons the scene was necessary, because the creature doing the penetrating aka The Addiction Demon is Hotel’s answer to S1’s Rubber Man , S2’s Bloody Face , and S3’s Twisty The Clown , but people are up in-arms about it.
Gaming/news and culture site Polygon roasted the scene:
“There was no apparent reason why Greenfield’s character had to be raped, nor was there enough time between introducing him on the show and showcasing the crude act to even hint that there was an underlying context for it. Instead, the scene (which is broken down into two subsequent parts), is dragged out and shot from a variety of angles, almost as if Ryan was trying to take as much as he could out of the act to complete the scene. For lack of a better word, it’s sickening.”
Outraged Vanity Fair reviewer Richard Lawson called it “garbage”:
“After that scene, I took to Twitter, as one does, to complain that the scene was basically treated as a joke, because isn’t gay rape so funny. Immediately someone responded that, um, the scene wasn’t meant to be funny, to which I say pfffffft again. If the scene, and the whole episode, wasn’t meant to be at least amusing, then why cast Greenfield, a comedic actor, to play a Brant brother–type only to quickly punish him with a horrific—and, again, incredibly graphic, given that it aired on basic cable!—rape?”
Hollywood Reporter only had one question to ask Murphy:

And Refinery29 came to the party with the glaringly obvious:
“If that rape scene had happened to a female character — or even a straight male one — the internet would be losing its collective mind right now.”
Viewers were, and still are, very unhappy the scene was ever allowed to air, with some even calling on the rest of the season – which stars Lady Gaga as the bloodsucking owner of the Hotel Cortez – to be canned.

The only person who doesn’t seem grossly offended by the ep is Gaga herself, who live-tweeted her excitement about her acting debut.
