The 'Full House' actress, who ended her long collaboration with Hallmark earlier this year, called the people behind GAF "Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”
Candace Cameron Bure says her new network, Great American Family , does not plan to focus on same-gender relationships in its upcoming movies and projects, as opposed to the Hallmark Channel.
“I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,” Bure tells The Wall Street Journal in an interview that published Monday.
After making more than two dozen movies, including 10 holiday films, for the Hallmark Channel, Bure left the network earlier this year and now serves as chief creative officer at GAF.
The Full House alum previously said Great American Media better aligns with her career goals and personal beliefs.
“My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” Bure tells the Journal . “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”
Bure isn’t the only former Hallmark face to make the transition to Great American Family. Bill Abbott, former president and CEO of Hallmark’s parent company Crown Media, now serves as the CEO of Great American Media.
When The Wall Street Journal asked Abbott about his perspective on whether same-gender couples would be the focus of GAF films, he said, “it’s certainly the year 2022, so we’re aware of the trends. There’s no whiteboard that says, ‘Yes, this’ or ‘No, we’ll never go here.’”
In response to Bure’s latest remarks, Hilarie Burton Morgan took to Twitter Monday, where she called the actress a “bigot.”
“Now they’re just openly admitting their bigotry,” the One Tree Hill and White Collar actress wrote following The Wall Street Journal interview.
JoJo Siwa also called out the Fuller House actress on Instagram , saying, “I can’t believe after everything that went down just a few months ago, that she would not only create a movie with intention of excluding LGBTQIA+, but then also talk about it in the press. This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people.”
In 2019, The Hill reported that Morgan left a Hallmark job after she says executives ignored her requests for an “LGBTQ character, an interracial couple and diverse casting.”
Around the same time, the Hallmark Channel found itself under fire after pulling commercials featuring same-gender couples. The decision started a media frenzy during the holiday season — the network’s biggest time of the year. Hallmark later backtracked and apologized for the move.
Nearly a month after the commercial controversy, Abbott left the channel after 11 years without any explanation.
In an effort to move the network forward, Hallmark brought in Wonya Lucas, a former TV One executive and CNN brand manager, as the new CEO in August 2020. During a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter , she said her focus is making her new media brand as inclusive as its parent company’s greeting cards.
“I live a life that is reflective of a lot of different communities. I can authentically say I want those communities represented because I know, not just know of, I really know what it’s like to be othered, however you define that,” Lucas said.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Great American Family for comment.

Actress Candace Cameron Bure says in a new interview that she doesn’t expect her new network, Great American Family, to follow Hallmark’s lead in featuring same-sex couples.
The Wall Street Journal asked if Great American Family would include LGBT couples as plot leads, but Bure said it would not.
“I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,” Bure said.
Bure’s comments come as Hallmark prepares to break new ground with its first-ever movie featuring a same-sex storyline as the focus of the plot. The movie, The Holiday Sitter , will air on Hallmark on Dec. 11 and tell the story of two men who fall in love.
Great American Family, which launched last year as a Hallmark rival, is featuring 18 original Christmas movies this holiday season as part of its annual “Great American Christmas” event. One of those films, A Christmas … Present , features Bure and actor Marc Blucas.
Great American Family has embraced the faith community, Bure said. A song by Christian singer Matthew West, titled Come Home for Christmas , is the theme song for the Great American Christmas event.
“My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” Bure, an outspoken Christian, told The Wall Street Journal. “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”
Bure isn’t the only former Hallmark star to find a home in Great American Family films. Others include Daniel Lissing, Jill Wagner, Cameron Mathison, Jen Lilley and Danica McKellar.
Great American Family was launched in 2021 by former Hallmark executive Bill Abbott and is available on major cable and satellite outlets as well as on streaming platforms such as FRNDLY.
“For me, she’s the key piece of what we’re doing,” Abbott said of Bure.

Candace Cameron Bure's comments about not featuring same-sex couples in her films have met criticism.
Bure, who is now working as Great American Family's chief creative officer, recently spoke about wanting to put religion back into Christmas movies. The actress' departure from Hallmark comes as the network attempts to add more diversity to its lineup.
"The Holiday Sitter," Hallmark's first original film to focus on a same-sex couple, is set to be released next month.
When asked by the Wall Street Journal if her new channel will feature any LGBTQ storylines, Bure said no.
"I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core," she said.

However, the chief executive of Great American Media and orginal creator of the Hallmark Channel noted that there isn't a set plan.
"It’s certainly the year 2022, so we’re aware of the trends," Bill Abbott told the outlet. "There’s no whiteboard that says, ‘Yes, this’ or ‘No, we’ll never go here.'"
Bure's statement was called out by Hilarie Burton and Jojo Siwa.
Burton reacted to the comments on Twitter, slamming Bure as "disgusting."
"Now they're just openly admitting their bigotry. I called this s--- out years ago when Abbott was at Hallmark," she wrote. "Glad they dumped him. Being LGBTQ isn't a ‘trend.’ That guy and his network are disgusting. You too Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples."
"Bigot," Burton added. "I don’t remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy. But sure. Make your money, honey. You ride that prejudice wave all the way to the bank."

Siwa shared her thoughts on Instagram.
"Honestly, I can't believe after everything that went down just a few months ago, that she would not only create a movie with intention of excluding LGBTQIA+, but then also talk about it in the press," she wrote.
"This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people."
Jodie Sweetin, Bure's "Full House" co-star, was seen in Siwa's comment section, showing her support. "You know I love you," she wrote, adding two red heart emojis.
This isn't the first time Siwa has had issues with Bure . The former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant chose Bure as the "rudest" celebrity she had ever met while participating in a TikTok trend.
The two spoke about it and seemingly put the past behind them.

Bure departed the Hallmark Channel in April. She had worked with the popular network for over a decade, previously starring in 10 holiday movies and 30 films overall for Hallmark's Crown Media.
"My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them," she told the WSJ. "I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment."
In a previous statement, Bure shared how her personal beliefs align with Great American Family.
"I'm very excited to develop heartwarming family and faith-filled programming and make the kind of stories my family and I love to watch," she stated.
While Bure did not touch on her departure from the Hallmark Channel, she did say, "It basically is a completely different network than when I started because of the change of leadership."
