American Dad would be nothing without quirky alien Roger and all his personalities. If you want to see him at his best check out these Roger themed episodes, rated by IMDb.
Adult aimed animation American Dad is the little talked about yet ever-consistent side project of Seth MacFarlane . While Seth has allowed Family Guy to sink into an ever-deepening cynicism and The Cleveland Show to ever happen, American Dad has quietly stayed with fans and grown as a product.
It has certainly provided some of animated television's most surreal and hilarious episodes. However, if there was ever really anything separating American Dad from the ever-increasingly cynical adult animation world, it would be its series' mascot, Roger the alien.
That's genuinely the easiest way to describe him, as anything else delves into a strange world of sexual innuendo, ethical corruption, and drugs. To better examine the very character that has come to define the series, this list will be running down American Dad 's 10 best Roger episodes, according to IMDb .
"Phantom of the Telethon" is the revenge story that everyone's who's ever had their ideas ripped off needs. Feeling betrayed when Stan takes all the credit for coming up with a telethon to save the CIA's torture division (a charitable venture), Roger takes a garish role as the Phantom of the Telethon, haunting and inconveniencing every performance that Stan's show tries to put on.
This features some of his classic slapstick, crude pranks, him using a toy keyboard as an organ, and his own ingenious take of using said keyboard for torture.
Something that fans get reminded of every now and then is the fact that, as an alien, Roger shouldn't be seen undisguised in public. At the very least, he shouldn't appear without a costume in front of any CIA agents... if at all. However, that doesn't stop Roger from taking part in one of his most best money making schemes: Selling pictures of a real-life alien.
The scenario from there gets even more ridiculous when, as the star reporter getting all these alien pictures (somehow), Roger gets hired by the CIA to hunt himself down. He definitely has everything under control.
Ricky Spanish is perhaps Roger's most iconic and most infamous character in the world. He is defined as his worst persona, given that the costume makes him do terrible, ever-increasingly reprehensible things.
Yet, the youthful optimist, Steve, still thinks that Ricky, the fake persona of Roger's imagination, can be redeemed. From there comes a story of hope, betrayal, and lost innocence, as Steve is shown just how wrong he is. Ricky Spanish...
It's always fun to see the typically selfish and arrogant Roger take a more vulnerable and desperate role, especially when it provides more insight into his increasingly exaggerated and retconned backstory. During a fun sleepover with Steve, Roger becomes traumatized when playing one of Steve's violent video games: the Oregon Trail.
This little piece of virtual reality reminded Roger of his old family during America's early, pioneering expansion and of all the different and horrific ways they died. Acting calmly and rationally, he decides to kidnap the entire Smith family and trap them within Steve's computer so that they may never see the same fate. Lucky for the Smiths, there is apparently a way out through Steve's video game.
Roger's personas only got stranger and more varied since the concept's introduction. Prior to being defined by his "personas," Roger was simply just stuck in the house. However, ever since he's adorned a wig, Roger's let loose, even his mind.
This episode features Roger going up against Roger, when he finds out the man whose life he's recently been trying to ruin was actually just one of his personas assuming a life of their own. It's an amazing twist that certainly acts as the stopping point for an increasingly absurd episode.
If being a drug abusing, flamboyant alien weren't enough, the creators decided to also give Roger the ability to see into people's futures. After trying to get the Smiths to enjoy the more spontaneous elements of life, a sudden accident leaves Roger with the ability to peer into the future of anyone he touches.
Being the sticklers they are, the Smiths inevitably abuse this power to guarantee their own constant safety, constantly pestering Roger whether or not something will kill them. However, things start to heat up when Roger loses his powers, and the family is left to actually deal with the unknown.
Having held an iconic role in the series for several years, it was about time that Roger finally got the coronation ceremony that he deserved. And what better ceremony has adorned some of society's most elite and remembered better than a celebrity roast? If only Roger were self-aware enough to actually be roasted.
This episode sees the family take a few good-natured yet harsh jokes at Roger during his roast, inevitably convincing him to take murderous revenge against them. This rampage eventually drives the Smith's to hideout in space, only for Roger to facilitate a few, neat alien homages.
When Roger gets overstressed from all the different activities that his personas do, it's up to Stan to assume his roles, when Roger has to go on vacation.
However, Stan pretty much doesn't see the point of doing any of these characters, leaving him to haphazardly shirk off a responsibility or two which somehow leads to utter chaos in the city. Needing to do something drastic, Stan busts out the help of an old classic. No one can ever really keep Ricky Spanish down.
Family Guy really made a bundle when it did its Star Wars parodies. Following that same line of reasoning, American Dad adopted the concept and adapted it with the only franchise that would make sense with the CIA agent, Stan Smith, James Bond .
And while most of the family do decent jobs with their Bond-esque characters, and Stan pretty much just plays himself, Roger stands out as the sinister and ever eccentric Bond villain. Relishing in the genre's gaudy and convoluted design sensibilities for its villains, Roger is in his element, as he berates his henchmen, harasses Stan, and more than falls to his own clumsiness and hubris. It's great.
American Dad certainly knows how to celebrate a seminal moment. Having reached its 200th episode, the series decides to just have fun with its consistency and world and just throw it into a mysterious apocalypse. After having alienated his family in the days leading to the end of the world, Stan now stalks the streets just trying to survive.
Everything is in disarray, and everyone is afraid of a mysterious force only known as "the Two-Hundred." As always, that turns out to be Roger.
It all turns out to be Roger. After Roger accidentally causes the apocalypse, all 200 of his personalities take up physical form and now wreak havoc upon the world. It's a fun way to celebrate a long history, and a great way to honor all of the fun stories told by the series best character.
