When Gabriela Hearst debuted her new spring 2022 collection during New York Fashion Week in September, her inclusive presentation stood out. For starters, Hearst collaborated with two Navajo weavers, Naiomi Glasses and TahNibaa Naataanii, to craft some of her new woven dresses and trenches. But she also cast a stellar lineup of Indigenous models to walk in the show, including Quannah Chasinghorse , Celeste Romero, and Valentine Alvarez. The Indigenous representation was not lost on the many fresh new faces backstage. “I really never saw Indigenous folks up on billboards or at Fashion Week, representing major commercial brands,” says Cherokee Jack, an Aniyunwiya model who walked the runway and held back tears after the show. “Now, kids on the rez, and even Indigenous folks in the city, can now look and see that it’s possible.”
Hearst aside, this past fashion month overall proved to be a real turning point in the industry in terms of properly representing Native American and Native Mexican models. At shows like Prabal Gurung and Gucci , rising Oglala Lakota model Denali White Elk walked alongside breakout stars like Chasinghorse , who proudly sports her traditional Yidįįłtoo face tattoos and has fast emerged as one of fashion’s favorite new top models. Together, these Indigenous models are slowly making a name for themselves in an industry that has long overlooked their talent, and forming a unique support system behind the scenes. “It’s amazing having friends who have similar experiences to you, and who are Indigenous and look like you,” says Alvarez, who has walked for Gucci, Valentino, and Chloé. “I see myself in them, and you feel that love and support. We all want each other to succeed and flourish.”
Of course, Indigenous models have always been around, especially at large-scale events like the annual Santa Fe Indian Market fashion show . But many high fashion labels are only now catching on, as companies continue to take a hard look at how they can be more inclusive. While some Native models are represented by top agencies like IMG and Ford, Indigenous modeling agencies, like Supernaturals Modelling , are also making them easier to find than ever before.
Even better than being on the runway, however, is the chance to have a global platform. Many of these models use their social media pages to educate people about their heritage and raise awareness around issues in their communities. Chasinghorse was an environmental activist long before she got into modeling. As she’s become more well-known, she continues to use her social pages to shed light on crucial issues affecting her people. Other models, like Jack, do the same , and feel a duty to do so. “My mom always taught me to speak up,” says Jack. “There are so many people that have never met a Native person before. It’s everyone’s individual privilege and responsibility to educate themselves, but I’m in this position where I can share and relate my own experiences. I’m willing to be patient with people and have the same conversation 100 times.” He and many other models also simply want to spotlight the beauty of their culture, too. “Indigenous beauty hits different,” he says.
Below, meet six Native models on the rise.
Discovery story: “My mom’s a makeup artist, so I’ve been modeling since I was a baby. I did a lot of commercial work, like for Target and Best Buy. As I grew older, modeling was still always a dream, so I tried to get with a bigger agency. I ended up signing with my mother agency [an industry term for the first agent to sign a particular model], Ignite Models. Through them, I got my first editorial, for Man About Town. Then I got a call from Ford last year, and signed with them that same day.”
Standout gig: “My first big commercial experience was with Gap. I also went to Morocco with Banana Republic for their last campaign. That was mind blowing, because it was my first time outside of the continent. I also worked with Askov Finlayson, and we went up North to Grand Marais in Minnesota. It was beautiful.”
Why representation matters: “ [Walking the Gabriela Hearst show at] New York Fashion Week meant a lot to me. It was a big deal to represent Indigenous folks in the fashion industry, which can often be Eurocentric. The whole collection was designed and woven by Navajo weavers, and there were also other Indigenous models in the show. I was holding back tears, because I never saw little Indian boys at Fashion Week, or in campaigns.”
Dream job: “I would love to work with more high-fashion brands. I want to continue working, so that I can have a bigger voice and to bring even more representation. And have more opportunities to highlight people who need to be at the forefront, and to put them in rooms with people who can make change.”
Discovery story: “I was scouted in September, after doing a small Instagram ad for a menstrual cup. My friend then pushed me to submit digitals [simple, clear images that models use for their portfolio], so I did. My modeling agency, Vision, got back to me the next day. I never imagined anything like this happening to me. Shortly after, I did the Marc Jacobs show, and that was after only one test shoot!”
Standout gig: “Walking for Valentino was a dream. And walking the Gucci show was surreal. I didn't feel like anything was really happening until I got home and I looked at the pictures. I was like, ‘Oh, shit. That really just happened to me.’ And walking for Marc Jacobs—meeting Marc himself, and walking with Gigi Hadid—was amazing.”
Why representation matters: “I never grew up feeling beautiful. I felt like I could never be a model. Growing up, [fashion] was very Eurocentric. Everybody who was [thought of as] the epitome of beauty didn't look like me—they didn’t have a bridge in their nose like I did, and they didn’t have brown skin like I did. Being able to see other minorities flourish [today], it gives you the courage to do it. Also, you really want to be that person for people. I get people in my messages who are like, ‘This is the first time I see somebody who looks like me in a magazine or in a show.’ It makes me want to put my face in more places, because I want more people who see themselves in me to see me, and know that they are also beautiful.”
Discovery story: “I did a Gucci video with one of the stars of Stranger Things . I thought it was fun, but I never thought it could be an option for me to model [full-time]. Then I met Greg Chan at Soul, and he became my champion. He’s the reason why I got the Vogue Italia cover. I also met my mother agent at Clover, and he’s also championed me when a lot of other people wouldn’t.”
Why representation matters: “My birth father is Chippewa, and my birth mother is Black. A lot of people don’t affirm my Native ancestry, because my skin is darker. But we range in all different shades and colors—my skin doesn’t control the blood that runs through my veins. I would like to see more of a welcoming arm [in fashion], so that we can all feel included, and for all of us to have a seat at the table. There are so many jobs, and nobody's losing spots by including more people of different backgrounds.”
Discovery story: “I got scouted right after I graduated from high school. I had never considered modeling. That summer, my friends and I went out to Santa Monica and we were just walking around the shops, and I got scouted by the owner of my mother agency. At the time, I was working at In-N-Out, and it took me a while to quit after I started modeling—I loved getting free burgers!”
On finding self-love : “I’m Mexican and Native, so I have a really masculine face and strong cheekbones. Growing up, I was always like, ‘Why do I have this nose?’ I wanted the perfect girl’s nose with the little swoop. But my great-grandmother always told me, ‘You need to appreciate your facial features—they come from very powerful people.’”
Why representation matters: “Every aspect of the modeling world is changing so much, and I feel like I’m starting right in the middle of it. Walking for Gabriela Hearst was amazing to see, because she's so inclusive. The way she also hired Native people to make some of her clothing was amazing.”
Standout gig: “I walked for Chloé this year. Paloma [Elsesser] was one of the first people to talk to me. She literally drove me home that night after the show, and she just gave me a whole speech and words that I needed to hear.”
Discovery story: “I started modeling after I posted some pictures online. My brother, Clearbear, would just take pictures of me for fun. We weren’t really expecting anything to come from it. Then a talent scout, Daniel Peddle, who is my mother agent discovered me and my twin brother shortly after that.”
Standout gig: “One of my first jobs was modeling for Nike. That was one of the first moments where I realized, ‘Wow, I’m really coming along.’ It made me want to start giving more of my time and energy to modeling.”
Why representation matters: “It’s great to finally have representation of our Indigenous people. We don’t look one way; We’re diverse. Having that representation is going to echo out our voices to be heard in spaces that they're usually not heard. I hope that inspires creativity within our community, and also confidence—a sense of confidence to be strong and to hold our head high.”
Discovery story: “I was always interested in modeling. I was the tallest one in my high school, and I loved wearing heels, so I was a giant. My English teacher knew of a modeling agency in Portland, so I sent some pictures to the agency that a school photographer took of me. They were having a contest and I won a free portfolio, and then my modeling took off so fast after that.”
Why representation matters: “I’m Miluk Coos, and I think it’s really cool to get recognition for our smaller tribe. I love being able to put that out there, and to share my culture and where I’m from. I don’t think I’ve met a single Native person modeling yet, but I would love to meet Quannah. She’s the only one that I’ve seen be taken to the next level. I’m so inspired by her.”
Dream job: “One day, I would love for Native Americans from all different tribes to get together and show their regalia—that would just be the coolest-looking fashion show ever. Authentic regalia has been passed down from generations, and it makes me appreciate all the work that goes into designer fashion too, because I know the work that Natives put into their beading.”
