It’s International Cat Day AND Caturday! Well, we should probably post some cat pictures, don’t you think? Granted, the cats here at White Oak are a little bigg…er than the ones you have in your household. And even though the domestic cat is related to big cats, especially tigers, they are not descended from them. According to a study published in 2007, the African wildcat (F.s. lybica) is the common ancestor of the domestic cat. White Oak is home to three species of big cats: tigers, Florida panthers, and cheetahs. All three species are considered endangered or threatened in their native ranges. Tigers are poached for the illegal wildlife trade. Florida panther habitat is under threat from development in south Florida. And cheetahs are seen as threats to livestock as well as being trafficked in the exotic pet trade. This is why the conservation work being done by White Oak and other conservation organizations here in the U.S. and around the world is essential. Dine-in eating is back under the Shave Bridge along the intracoastal at the Down Under (with social distancing & outdoor seating).
Good afternoon Nassau! Down under is now open for dine in eating at 25% capacity, as well as our full deck and additional seating under our pavilion. All tables… are spaced 6 feet apart. Tonight’s special is a jerk mahi topped with mango beurre blanc. Mahi is our fresh catch, green beans is the chef side and our dessert of the day is oatmeal chocolate cake with a peanut butter cream cheese icing. Fat tire and mimosa are our drink specials.

Spotted a juvenile BALD EAGLE this evening before sunset as it landed on a pine tree along the Amelia River. What a nice sighting on EARTH DAY 2020! Those old enough remember that the eagle became a symbol of the environmental movement back in the 1960’s & 70s. Bald eagles were in danger of extinction in much of their habitat. Protections by the Endangered Species Act followed by banning DDT in 1972 helped eagles recover, a memorable success story. HAPPY EARTH DAY! #AmeliaIslandLiving

Климат Амилии характеризуют мягкая зима, прохладные летние ночи и минимум осадков (больше в летние и осенние месяцы, меньше в весенние), что превращает остров в курорт для любого времени года. Температура воды колеблется от 13 градусов Цельсия в январе и феврале до 29 градусов в августе.
На острове расположены два курорта международного класса: Амилия-Айленд-Плантейшен (англ. Amelia Island Plantation) и гостиница сети «Ritz-Carlton».
На побережье острова откладывают яйца морские черепахи. У берегов Амилии можно встретить дельфинов, ламантинов, а иногда и находящихся под угрозой исчезновения северных гладких китов.
