Ambiguous has, like many words in English, more than one possible meaning; a quality some might refer to as ambiguous itself. This word may mean "doubtful or uncertain especially from obscurity or indistinctness," "capable of being understood in two or more possible senses or ways," and " inexplicable ."
The Latin prefix ambi- means "both," and has led to many people confusing ambiguous and ambivalent . Ambivalent refers to having mixed, contradictory, or more than one feeling about something (the second portion of this word comes from the Latin valere , "to be strong, be worth"). Ambiguous , on the other hand, means unclear or able to be understood in multiple ways (it comes in part from the Latin agere , meaning to drive").
Ambiguous_ is an adjective. The noun form related to this word may be either ambiguity or ambiguousness . The adverb is ambiguously .

Did you know?
Ambiguous, obscure, vague, equivocal, and cryptic are used to describe writing or speech that is not clearly understandable. Ambiguous applies to language capable of more than one interpretation ("an ambiguous suggestion") and derives from the Latin verb ambigere, meaning "to be undecided." Obscure suggests a hiding or veiling of meaning through some inadequacy of expression or withholding of full knowledge ("obscure poems"). Vague, on the other hand, describes a lack of clear formulation due to inadequate conception or consideration ("a vague sense of obligation"). Equivocal is the best choice for language that creates a wrong or false impression, allowing for uncertainty or promoting mistaken interpretations ("the politician gave an equivocal answer"), and when there is a deliberate attempt to confuse, cryptic can be used ("cryptic clues about the location of the buried treasure").

If you found out your girlfriend was born with ambiguous genitalia, would you be upset?
New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast
I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess.
We don't know, but we'll answer anyway
Follow up question: what if they were a MtF transgendered person who transitioned before puberty? After? Assume post-op in both situations.
I honestly would need some education and time to figure out how I feel.
To be honest I'm not well educated enough on what those things actually mean, or what the implications are for intercourse or family planning.
Some people are born with external genitalia that are neither male nor female, but typically somewhere in between. Typically, the parents have to make a decision as to whether they should raise the child as male or female. Here is some more information:
As for MtF (male-to-female) transsexualism. A common misconception is that gender is synonymous with sex. We'll hand wave away some unnecessary technicalities and summarize it as gender being a state of mind, encompassing things like gender roles, attitudes, etc while sex can be thought of as a phenotype. The WHO does a better job I think:
"Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.
"Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.
"Male" and "female" are sex categories, while "masculine" and "feminine" are gender categories.
Now, for most people these two things (gender and sex) align quite well. A boy grows up feeling like a boy and develops into a boy and is quite happy with being a boy. Same for girls.
However, for some people these two concepts do not mesh well. A boy may grow up as a boy and spend his days dreaming about being a girl. He may hope to wake up as a girl, like his life to that point was a dream. He may want to play with dolls, take ballet, or do other stereotypical "girl" things. Of course, this does not necessarily mean he has an identity disorder.
When puberty hits is often the worst time for these individuals. The development of breasts in women or facial hair in men may cause significant distress. Men may have a level of disgust and contempt for their penis that is unfathomable to most people. Men and women may begin identifying as the opposite gender.
People with Gender Identity Disorder who identify as the opposite gender and find living as their "biological" (more on that in a minute) gender to be unbearable. Those people may elect to begin the process of transitioning from male to female (MtF) or female to male (FtM). The process typically involves counselling and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). In MtF transsexuals HRT involves androgen blockers to stop the effects of testosterone as well as estrogen. In many this significantly reduces the depression and anxiety associated with their gender dysphoria. MtF trans people on HRT will typically see their skin soften (compare your skin to a girl's), the growth of breasts, and the redistribution of fat. Further treatment options may include things like facial feminization surgery and electrolysis to remove facial hair.
The term "post-op" used in the original post is in regards to sexual reassignment surgery (SRS). In MtF transsexuals SRS involves the modification of the penis into a clitoris and the formation of a vagina and labia.
As for your question on intercourse and family planning. Full SRS surgery should result in a vagina that, in appearance, is indistinguishable from a cis woman's (that is, someone who was born as and identifies as female).
Family planning wise, medicine is currently not advanced enough to allow for transwoman to receive a uterus and be able to give birth. It should be noted that just recently the first successful pregnancy with a transplanted uterus was achieved. I believe the woman received the uterus from her mother. So, in the future it may be possible although that is almost definitely a long ways away.
I would be upset because I wouldn't be willing to date either a transexual person or an intersexual person. I'd also be upset because the person was dishonest and wasted both of our times.
I feel a bit bad for typing that out, as I am sympathetic to their struggles, and I fully support their rights. (I should also mention that I don't think gender, and even sex in some cases, is necessarily an either/or thing.) Ultimately, it's a sexual preference for the female sex and gender. Having the right bits originally, and self-identifying as a woman, are two necessary conditions of having a relationship with me.
EDIT: Fixed mistakes in the comment.
I wouldn't be comfortable dating someone who was born a man or with male genitalia.
Even if I love the person, I don't think I'd be able to bend my sexuality for them.
I'd only be upset if they didn't tell me. This is obviously something that's a pretty big part of their life, I'd at least like to know prior to doing anything.
As for MtF transgender....I can't honestly say. I know a couple, work with a couple, but have no attraction to them for reasons beyond being transgendered. It's a situation I haven't actually run into, so I can't rightly say. I'd like to say I'd have no issue with it, but honesty requires me to say that I just don't know. Attraction may put me past it, it may not.
Yes, I personally wouldn't be able to do it.
I think it should be on the table pre-sex and the person can decide.
Do not care in terms of attraction. Would have zero effect on me.
If she wanted to talk about it, I would be more than willing to have that conversation. It would be good to understand her better and connect with her better. I would understand exactly why she felt the need to hide it from me in the first place.
Fertility is important to me in a potential significant other. Since ambiguous genitalia can arise in a multitude of ways, it would be important to me that she can bear children and is generally in good health. If those boxes are checked, it doesn't matter. However, given those criteria, MtF is out of the question.
i would just want to know is all. I think its fare. LIke if i go to a subway and ask for a meatball sub and they give me a cold cut combo and telling me its a meatball sub and then when i wrap it at my table and its not im gonna be confused and upset a bit. I like both of those but i was expecting a meatball sub not a cold cut combo.
I like to think that I wouldn't care what they were born with, just what they have now. Well actually, I don't know for sure because the situation hasn't come up in real life, but as long as the rest of their body looks definitely female I might not care about genital arrangement.
I wouldn't be angry, but it would weird me out. Infertility would be a deal breaker for me in most situations.
MtF trans is a deal breaker as well.
Sorry, not one bit interested in a transexual or intersexual person. The relationship would have no future, and depending on when I found out I'd feel like it had been a waste of time.
Put it like this: If she was close enough to a man that she could never bear children (either from being born male, or having predominantly male genitalia) I would not start a relationship with that person.
If I found out AFTER the fact, I would hate that person for the deception.
M24. I do not want to date anyone with any amount of Y-chromosomes. I'm sorry if you have always felt like a woman and now look like one, but that is not my problem. I'm sure there is a more pc way to say this. Something about someone's sex is different than someone's gender and I need both to be woman/female.
As to female with ambiguous genitalia, I don't know what that is and am afraid to Google it.
I do not want to date anyone with any amount of Y-chromosomes.
So would you be okay with dating someone with SRY-postive 46,XX syndrome who had transitioned? They wouldn't have any Y chromosomes.
Obviously you are free to find whatever or whoever you want attractive or unattractive, and I'm not going to judge you for that. I'm just curious if it is actually the Y chromosome that bothers you.
I'd use it as a better excuse to break up with them because I find their genitals strange or something
