FAIRFAX, Va. — Amber Heard made a tearful return to the stand Thursday in her and Johnny Depp’s defamation trial, denying she tipped off paparazzi before filing a temporary restraining order against her then-husband in 2016.
“I did not call TMZ or any other news source or paparazzi source, no one,” Heard insisted in the Virginia courtroom.
Depp attorney Camille Vasquez and Heard talked over each other during the exchange about her trip to a Los Angeles courthouse in May 2016, recreating the dynamic the two shared when Heard was last on the stand for almost four days of testimony.
Former TMZ employee Morgan Tremaine gave short testimony on Wednesday where he discussed sending paparazzi to follow Heard to court and publishing a video of Depp smashing cabinets and screaming that Heard had recorded.
“What actual survivor of domestic violence wants that?” Heard said Thursday after Vasquez accused her of being in cahoots with TMZ. “If I wanted to leak it, I would have done a lot more with it.”
Vasquez replied: “You testified earlier you didn’t know how to leak things.”
Speaking about the impact of her public divorce from Depp during her direct questioning, Heard quickly broke down, stating, “People want to kill me.”
“People want to put my baby in the microwave and they tell me that,” the mom of 1-year-old Oonagh Paige Heard said.
Looking directly at the jury, Heard said, “Johnny … promised me that if I ever left him, he’d make me think of him every single day that I live.”
“In the harassment and humiliation, the campaign against me that’s echoed every single day on social media. And now in front of cameras in this room. Every single day I have to relive the trauma,” she cried.
“Perhaps it’s easy to forget, but I’m a human being,” Heard added.
“Protecting the secret that I did, for as long as I did, has taken enough of my voice,” she said. “I have a right to my voice and my name … I have the right as an American to tell my story.”
On cross-examination, Depp’s lawyer opened her aggressive line of questioning by saying: “You said this trial has been hard for you. So let’s talk about that.”
“Your lies have been exposed to the world,” Vasquez charged.
“I haven’t lied about anything I’ve been here to say,” Heard replied, looking at the jury.
The pair went on to spar over several previous testimonies, including that of Heard’s former best friend Rocky Pennington.
Vasquez listed a slew of witnesses who came to testify on Depp’s behalf, asking Heard if she “expected” them to show up in court.
“I know how many people will come out of the woodwork to be in support of Johnny,” she responded, adding it’s in part why she chose to write the 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post over which Depp is suing her.
The two also fought over a picture of spilled wine that Heard had testified about previously, in what was another heated moment .
Depp, 58, is asking for $50 million in damages after Heard wrote she became a “public figure representing domestic abuse” and recounted the backlash she received for speaking out against a powerful man.
Heard, 36, countersued her ex-husband, claiming she was defamed when his team made statements on his behalf that her domestic abuse allegations were fabricated.
After a short redirect that followed Vasquez’s cross-examination, court proceedings came to an end just after noon Thursday.
Judge Penney Azcarate then gave the jurors brief instructions before dismissing them for the rest of the day.
The jury will return to the courtroom at 9 a.m. Friday for closing arguments and will then be granted as much time as needed to deliberate.

Amber Heard told her nurse that her then-fiancé Johnny Depp failed to provide enough support in the hours following a leak of more than 50 of her nude photos in 2014.
Prerecorded testimony from Heard's former nurse, Erin Falati, was shown to jurors on Tuesday morning in Depp's defamation case against Heard. Notes from Falati taken on September 22, 2014, hours after the leak the night before, depicts Heard as "agitated" and "screaming" in a highly anxious emotional state.
"[Heard] crying and states she got into verbal argument with fiance after RN departure," Falati, also known as Erin Boerum, wrote in her notes. "[Heard] states she feels fiance did not provide support."
Heard was among the victims of the 2014 hack of around a dozen female celebrities' iCloud hack, leading to the leak of personal photos. TMZ reported on the afternoon of September 21 that Heard's photos were leaked, among them a picture of herself nude with a message to Depp.
Falati was notified about the hack at 11 p.m. that day, she wrote in her notes, as Heard told her she was "experiencing [a] high level of anxiety."
When Falati arrived at Heard's home, the actress was crying and "hyperverbal," and the nurse guided her through relaxation techniques.
Depp was also present and offered support, Falati wrote.
"[Heard]'s finance offered emotional support," Falati wrote. [Herd] able to calm self and agreed to journal thoughts as coping mechanism."
Heard took medication to treat her anxiety and went to bed. But around 1 a.m. on September 22, she was awake, Falati wrote, and had gotten into the "verbal argument" with Depp. Falati helped Heard "with deep breathing techniques, processing feelings and thoughts" and then gave her more medication to help her sleep, Falati wrote.
"I remember a general sense of Ms. Heard being very upset her phone was hacked because there was very sensitive information in it, and I feel that she was having a difficult time calming after that," Falati said in the deposition played in the courtroom Tuesday.
Falati's testimony is for the trial over a lawsuit Depp brought against Heard in 2019 . He alleged she defamed him when she described herself in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed as a victim of domestic violence — widely understood to be a reference to her marriage with Depp, which ended in 2016 around the same time she filed for a restraining order against him. Depp has denied being violent toward Heard and has alleged that she, in fact, physically and verbally abused him. Heard has denied the claims and filed a countersuit , alleging Depp abused her numerous times before and during their marriage.
Both parties have accused each other of being prone to violence while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Falati specialized in addiction treatment and worked with Heard in 2014 and 2015, also helping her with anxiety issues. Falati also worked with David Kipper, the doctor who treated Depp for his own drug addiction.
Depp previously brought a defamation lawsuit in the UK against The Sun, a British tabloid, over a claim that he was a "wife beater." At the 2020 trial, Heard testified that Depp blamed her for the nude photo leak.
"They went everywhere,'' she said. "Johnny blamed me for that. I was to blame."

After Amber Heard's sister testified that she saw Johnny Depp punch her sister, a leaked video purports to show Heard abusing her sister.
A leaked video calls into question important testimony given by Amber Heard's sister on the fourth day of defense testimony against Heard's ex-husband, Johnny Depp, in Depp's libel trial against the Rupert Murdoch-owned British newspaper, The Sun. The Fantastic Beasts actor had filed the suit after the tabloid repeated claims by Depp's ex-wife, Aquaman star Heard, that the Pirates of the Caribbean star was physically abusive towards her during their tumultuous, short-lived marriage.
Depp's attorneys were asking the court about the video before the fifth day of testimony began, as Depp's legal team believes that this leaked video showing Amber Heard abusing her sister, Whitney Henriquez, contradicts Henriquez's testimony on Thursday about Depp abusing her sister. They wanted to use the video to cross-examine Henriquez.
Henriquez is a very important witness in this libel trial because so far she is the only third party yet who has testified that they actually saw Johnny Depp hit Amber Heard. Henriquez testified that she saw Depp hit Heard “really hard in the head … multiple times” in March 2015 in an altercation that is now being referred to in the trial as the "stairs incident." Heard had previously testified that she had remembered a rumor that Depp had thrown one of his ex girlfriends, Kate Moss, down the stairs and Heard believed that Depp was about to do the same to her younger sister, Henriquez. Therefore, in an attempt to protect her sister, Heard punched Depp. Heard and her sister then alleged that Depp proceeded to pummel Heard with blows.
At specific issue is the fact that Henriquez testified that Heard's punch of Depp was the only time that Henriquez had ever seen her sister physically attack anyone. She also testified that her sister had never hit her or threatened her in her life. Well, after Depp's attorneys finished their cross-examination on Thursday afternoon, they received an anonymous leaked video that allegedly shows Heard attacking her sister.
Depp's attorneys, naturally, believe that this video contradicts Henriquez's testimony and draws into doubt all of her other testimony in support of her sister. Davis Sherborne , Depp's lead attorney in this matter, claims that Henriquez has been "tailoring" her testimony to match the physical evidence that exists.
The judge in the case is putting the video off for now, choosing to let other witnesses testify on Friday and give the lawyers for The Sun time to see the video for themselves.
