"Astronomy" and "astrophysics" are broadly synonymous in modern usage. [3][4][5] In dictionary definitions, "astronomy" is "the study of objects and matter outside the Earth's atmosphere and of their physical and chemical properties", [6] while "astrophysics" is the branch of astronomy dealing with "the behavior, physical properties, and ...

Non-visual amateur astronomy includes the use of infrared filters on conventional telescopes, and also the use of radio telescopes. Some amateur astronomers use home-made radio telescopes, while others use radio telescopes that were originally built for astronomical research but have since been made available for use by amateurs.
And right out of the gate they designated infrared astronomy, as no-go territory for any amateur. And that got my attention, and I hope I got yours. As my article on how to build a near infrared telescope is really very brief, I'd like to take more time, and invest you in my history of how I arrived at this point. Thank you.

Measuring the infrared energy arriving from astronomical objects is dificult because much of it is blocked by water vapor and other molecules in Earth's atmosphere. Therefore, most infrared astronomers use airborne telescopes, balloon payloads or space telescopes to study the thermal radiation from celestial objects.
