Some couples turn to counseling in times of stress. Josephine Decker and Zefrey Throwell turned on the camera.
Three years ago, the Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, filmmakers had been dating a month when they had sex for the first time…and the condom slipped off.
Decker, now 33, wavered about whether she’d want to keep a baby if she got pregnant, before ultimately deciding to get the morning-after pill.
They also decided the experience would make good art. So they re-enacted it on film, with nudity.
“We decided to begin filming our life and re-creating events that happened to us,” says Throwell, 39, of Bushwick. “It’s a twist of reality television and aggressive therapy.”
Sounds like the kind of movie that fits right in at a festival of…pornography?
The question of what counts as erotic is at the heart of the first NYC Porn Film Festival, opening Friday at Secret Project Robot in Bushwick (through March 1).
Some films have titles — such as “A Lesbian Lesson in Backdoor Exploration” and “Orgasmic Nipples” — that would be at home on PornHub, the X-rated version of YouTube sponsoring the fest.
Others explore a different sort of eroticism.
Throwell and Decker are one of a handful of real couples who collaborated on films for the event. Their 13-minute short shows them at an Occupy Wall Street event and a White House protest as well as engaging in scenes of intimacy. It takes place in a bubble of new love, when couples barely leave the bed.
Kate Levitt and Brian Blomerth perceive sex in a different way. The couple of five years submitted a four-minute short that stars their Pomeranian, Slippy — his role is very PG — in a hot dog costume, getting teased by an actual hot dog. Levitt is in it, but she’s not naked.
“We made a porn that’s like if you were trying to describe to an alien what a porno is: ‘Oh, it’s in a sketchy location, there are animals doing something weird, maybe with a wiener,’” Blomerth, 30, says.
They shot it in their Far Rockaway home, where they also run an e-cigarette company. Levitt, 29, says they entered the fest to break the porn stigma — but also to have fun.
The same goes for the film by Bushwick artist Bradford Kessler, 32. He and his girlfriend of six months — a 23-year-old who appears in the film under the nom de porn Ethel Clavicle — say it’s an extension of their kinky relationship.
In the six-minute short, a wealthy heiress (Clavicle) seduces liberal-arts students in Washington Square Park.
Clavicle, an NYU communications grad originally from Westchester, wears a bondage mask in the movie — both because it’s a turn-on and she doesn’t want her parents to know she’s in a porno.
“I don’t think it’s the type of thing that most people would get aroused by,” Clavicle says.
Kessler thinks for a minute before noting, “Eh, some.”
