Ama Girls
Ama (海女, "sea women") are Japanese divers famous for collecting pearls, though traditionally their main catch is seafood. [1] The vast majority of ama are women.
Ama, literally means 'woman of the sea' and is recorded as early as 750 in the oldest Japanese anthology of poetry. These women specialised in free-diving some 30 feet down into cold water wearing nothing more than a loincloth. Since the Meiji era, divers wore goggles for clarity and from 1964, rubbery, black wetsuits.

The ama have a long history and they were described in the Manyōshū, an ancient book of Japanese poetry that was edited in the eighth century. It is said that ama stay under the water for about fifty seconds, but some can dive for more than a minute. Ama start diving as teenage girls, and many continue diving past the age of seventy.
