Am Ende des XV - Anfang des XVI Jahrhunderts. Unzufriedenheit mit den Päpsten und ihrem römischen Gefolge war allgegenwärtig. Selbst tief religiöse Menschen, die Rom besuchten, kehrten enttäuscht und empört von dieser Reise zurück. Ihre Wut wurde verursacht durch die Habgier der Päpste und Kardinäle, den schamlosen Luxus, der sie umgab (vergessen wir nicht, dass die Kirche die Gläubigen zur Mäßigung und zum Verzicht auf Exzesse aufrief), das übermäßige Interesse der Päpste an italienischen politischen Intrigen. Als die Anschuldigungen gegen die Päpste häufiger und dreister wurden, erwogen die Könige und Bischöfe mehrerer europäischer Länder, ihre Kirchen von Rom zu trennen. Gleichzeitig blieben die Lehre und die Rituale gleich, katholisch, aber die Macht des Papstes über die lokale, nationale Kirche wurde erheblich reduziert.
Die französischen Könige waren die ersten, die diesen Plan ausführten. Bereits 1438 erreichte Karl V., dass in den Angelegenheiten der französischen Kirche der Rat der Ortsbischöfe die Oberhoheit über den Papst erhielt; Von diesem Zeitpunkt an zahlte das französische Königreich keine jährlichen Steuern mehr an den Papst. 1516 erklärte sich König Franz I. bereit, die Annaten wieder nach Rom zu zahlen, erhielt dafür aber das Recht, Bischöfe und Kardinäle in seinem Reich selbstständig zu ernennen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass die französische Kirche bereits vor Beginn der Reformation viele ihrer Verbindungen zu Rom abbrach – dies half ihr, aus einem langen und hartnäckigen Kampf mit der Reformationsbewegung in Frankreich als Sieger hervorzugehen.
Alle Länder Europas zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts. sie versuchten sich auf die eine oder andere Weise gegen die exorbitanten Ansprüche der römischen Päpste (vor allem gegen Gelderpressungen) zu wehren. Die deutschen Länder erwiesen sich als die wehrlosesten - das zersplitterte Deutschland war nicht durch eine starke königliche Macht vor den Kirchenmännern geschützt, und die politische Landkarte des Landes bot keine Gelegenheit, eine einzige nationale Kirche wie die französische zu gründen. Daher wurden aus Deutschland die lautesten Flüche gegen die Päpste gehört; Deutschland wurde zur Wiege der Reformation.
Am 31. Oktober 1517 befestigte ein Augustinermönch, der im Auftrag seines Ordens an der Universität Wittenberg (in Sachsen) Theologie lehrte, einige Blätter an den Türen der kleinen Kirche des Wittenberger Schlosses. Der Mönchsprofessor war Martin Luther (1483-1546). Reden wir ein wenig über diesen Mann, denn seine Charaktereigenschaften haben den Verlauf der Reformation in Deutschland stark beeinflusst. Luthers entfernte Vorfahren waren bäuerlicher Herkunft; von ihnen erbte er das ziemlich grobe Gesicht eines Bürgerlichen und eine unausrottbare Sturheit, die Fähigkeit, bei Katastrophen fest auf den Beinen zu stehen. Luther verstand es, mit einfachen Leuten zu sprechen, er schrieb gut in der Sprache des Volkes – nicht umsonst ist seine Übersetzung der Bibel ins Deutsche in Deutschland immer noch sehr beliebt. Zugleich war Luther einer der gelehrtesten Theologen seiner Zeit; Darüber hinaus war er mit einem aufrichtigen religiösen Gefühl ausgestattet, der Fähigkeit, seine Beziehung zu Gott tief zu erfahren. Trotz seiner Sturheit erwies sich Luther als feinsinniger Politiker, der in der Lage war, starke Verbündete zu finden und wenn nötig große Zugeständnisse zu machen.

Zettel, die der junge Professor an der Kirchentür aufhängte, enthielten 95 Luthers Einwände gegen das Recht der Päpste, Sündern zu vergeben, die die Absolution kaufen. Gegen „Ablässe“ (die vom Papst unterzeichneten sogenannten Dokumente über die Vergebung der Sünden gegen Geld) wandten sich damals viele Theologen; Luther unterschied sich von ihnen nur in der Kühnheit und Härte seiner Reden. Dies reichte jedoch aus, um Luther innerhalb weniger Tage in ganz Deutschland bekannt zu machen. Neben ihm bildete sich sofort ein Kreis von Unterstützern und Gleichgesinnten, der gegenüber Rom noch unerbittlicher aufgestellt war als er selbst. Von der Kritik am Ablass gingen die „Martinisten“ (wie sie nach Luther genannt wurden) schnell dazu über, das Papsttum und die katholische Kirche als Ganzes zu verurteilen. Der endgültige Bruch zwischen Luther und Rom wurde 1520 besiegelt, als ein deutscher Theologe im Hof der Universität Wittenberg in Anwesenheit von Studenten einen päpstlichen Brief verbrannte, der den Rebellen aus der Kirche exkommunizierte. Mit diesem mutigen Schritt stellte sich Luther trotz aller Kritik an ihm außerhalb der christlichen Gesellschaft Europas, dem Papst gehorsam. Luther war bereit zu behaupten, dass er allein den wahren Gott sieht, während Millionen von „Papisten“ sich irren und dem Weg folgen, der direkt in die Hölle führt.
Wahrscheinlich hat damals niemand daran gezweifelt, dass Luther auf ein Feuer wartete. Offenbar versuchte er selbst das Schicksal von Jan Hus, einem tschechischen Theologen, der 1415, hundert Jahre vor der Reformation, dafür verbrannt wurde, dass er sich gegen das vorherrschende Dogma ausgesprochen hatte. Luther entging aus zwei Gründen der Hinrichtung: Erstens erkannte er in Rom zu spät die Gefahr, die vom fernen Sachsen ausging, und gab Luther Zeit, sich zu stärken. Der Botschafter des Papstes in Deutschland berichtete nach Rom: „Neun Zehntel Deutschlands rufen ‚Luther'; das verbleibende Zehntel - mindestens - "Tod dem römischen Hof!". Zweitens nutzte Luther die ihm gewährte Atempause gut aus - unter den deutschen Fürsten konnte er mächtige Gönner finden. Viele von ihnen erkannten, dass die Parolen von „Doktor Martin“ ihnen helfen würden, sich nicht nur von Rom, sondern auch vom Deutschen Reich abzugrenzen. Als Luther 1521 an den Kaiserhof vorgeladen und verurteilt wurde, verhalf ihm Kurfürst Friedrich von Sachsen zu seinem Besitz und versteckte den aufständischen Theologen in einem der Schlösser.
