MOSCOW — The United States has now declared the death of a Japanese-American citizen in Russia as yet unverified.

Yulia Kosachev, 34, who is from Latvia, was on a training trip in the U.S. when she allegedly walked into the country on March 2 and was stopped in the U.S. s San Francisco Municipal Transportation District in her vehicle by another Russian passport.

A Russian Border Guard (BPFD) spokesperson said Kosachev ran into the U.S. in October on an extended-stay visa and that in the last five years, the individual in question has been granted humanitarian status, including permanent work authorization and diplomatic missions to the U.S., and she may not pose a security threat to people there.

Kosachev was detained at the Customs Processing Center in Russian custody.

U.S. officials are investigating the incident, which was first reported by Xinhua News Agency.

Kosachev is believed to be working in Russia for a company working on behalf of American expatriates who are trying to move their business to China where, as an adult, they face stiff restrictions and could face deportation.
