February 11th, 2021 marks the 6th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The UN states that although the global community has made effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science, they continue to be excluded from participating fully. Only around 30% of students in STEM-related fields in higher education are women and only 12% of STEM-related jobs are occupied by women.
This year, the theme is Beyond the Borders: Equality in Science for Society, … with a special focus on the value of the social aspects and cultural dimensions in Science, Technology and Innovation to enhance sustainable development programs.
In this post, we aim to shine a spotlight on some of our sisters working and studying in STEM-related fields:
1st: Mackenzie working for a vaccine company that performed process improvements for the whooping cough vaccine.
Chantal is in her final year of an MSc in Applied Health Sciences.
Veronica is seen here doing field research for environmental science.
2nd: Haley working in a lab during an internship, currently pursuing an MPH in Public Health Genetics.
3rd: Eva is a Noise and Vibration Scientist seen here taking vibration measurements of a rail for a work site.
4th: Porter is seen here holding a cow’s eye at a neuroscience camp hosted by Harvard Med School in 2019.
5th: Genna is pursing a degree as a Physician’s Assistant. Pictured here on paediatric surgery rotation.
6th: Meg worked for a pharmaceutical company testing medication for microbes.
7th: Tianna is seen here in scrubs. She is pursuing a degree in Health Science.
8th: Olena is seen here doing feel work at the Queen’s University Biological Station.
9th: Rebecca majors in Biology at Lakehead University.
10th: Ashley majored in math and is seen here after presenting at the Fields Institute on integrating computer coding in math education.

On February 1st, 1994, Alpha Phi Gamma became the first Asian American Interest Sorority on the campus of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The 7 founding sisters wanted to bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and sisterhood. Since 1994, Alpha Phi Gamma has establishments in California, Illinois, Arizona, Michigan, Missouri, Colorado, Nevada, Minnesota, North Carolina, New York, and Kansas. As we continue to grow our Sisters will continue to uphold the values and bonds of our Sisterhood all women of different nationalities, in our communities and universities.
