But since Mansion 28 has updated their menu, and I have now tried more of their dishes since my last review in Dec , I decided to dedicate another post on Mansion This dish features flame torched slices of smoked salmon on the bed of Taiwanese-style fong lye rice, glazed with their secret sauce and topped with Hokkaido Ikura salmon roe and some seaweed strips. This dish features grilled smoked duck breast and Onsen egg on the bed of Taiwanese-style fong lye rice, glazed with their homemade Japanese BBQ sauce. Onsen egg — Onsen tamago is a traditional Japanese low temperature egg which is slow cooked in the hot waters of onsen in Japan. The egg has a unique texture in that the white tastes like a delicate custard and the yolk comes out firm, but retains the colour and creamy texture of an uncooked yolk. This establishment has never failed to amaze me with their skills of cooking the different styles of egg. Their Onsen egg was perfect! The saltiness of the smoked duck is balanced out with the sweetness of their sauce, while the egg draws every element together to make it a truly enjoyable dish. This is a rather straightforward dish — basically baked chicken chop with creamy mushroom sauce, and veggies and cross-cut fries for sides. Their mushroom sauce is creamy enough. And they provide enough cross-cut fries to balance out the creamy mushroom sauce, because it can pretty jelak after awhile. Big breakfast is something I truly enjoy as it has a little bit of everything. At Mansion 28, their big breakfast features ham, beans, sausages, egg, cross-cut fries should be hash — but they always seem to out of those bread and veggies — the usual fare of a typical big breakfast set. Ondeh-Ondeh is one of the most popular traditional Nyonya kuih in Malaysia, with roots to the Baba Nyonya culture. It is a snack of sweet rice cake balls filled with molten palm sugar and coated in grated coconut. Mansion 28 has done a good job innovating it into a cake. The Ondeh Ondeh cake consists of multiple stacked sheets of pandan cake, with layers of palm sugar frosting in between the cake layers. The cake is coated in grated coconut. The melon cake was so-so. The cake consisted of multiple sheets of vanilla or mild melon vanilla cake, with slices of melon and cream in between the cake layers. The cake itself overall tasted pretty light, but I thought it lacked the melon flavor. Overall, I still stand by my previous review that this place offers a suitable place to chill and catch up with friends, given that Alor Setar has only a few good hang-out spots. Other than the instagrammable ambiance and aesthetic plating of their dishes, the food other than the cakes served here is nothing to shout about, and prices are generally on the higher side. After having tried Bar. Q Plaza , I was excited to try the local unfranchised version in Alor Setar. The menu is simple — there are 2 options — the big set RM42 or the small set RM Each set consists of slices of pork and beef, various vegetables, mushroom, fish balls, egg tofu and crab stick. The difference between the sets is the quantity of meat given. The big set has 4 pork plates and 1 beef plate, whereas the small set has 2 pork plates and 1 beef plate. Subsequently, you could also purchase extra ingredients meats and various processed foods from the fridge with prices per plate ranging from RM1 — RM Similar to Bar. Q Plaza, vegetables are provided free flow, however, they also provide free flow of glass noodles. To eat mu krata , you first need to lather the pork lard to grease the metal skillet, on which you subsequently grill the meat on. Soup is poured into the moat surrounding the metal skillet, of which you can boil vegetables and other foods. Over time, the soup takes up the essence of the grilled meat juices that flow down as you grill the meat on the metal skillet. The combination of both the boiled vegetables essence and meat juices creates a flavourful and rich soup. Did you know? Mu krata resembles a combination of a Korean barbecue and a Chinese hot pot, just that the Thai version uses charcoal. The veggies were good, and their processed food was, well… standard processed food. They do provide their version of Thai nam chim suki dipping sauce, but while eating here I was thinking how much I missed the BBQ sauce that Bar. Q Plaza provides. One thing I dislike about this place is that they use styrofoam plates as plates to pre-pack the meats and any other extra ingredients taken from the fridge. I was driving by Jalan Gangsa in Alor Setar the other day, and this restaurant caught my attention. It was intriguing to see that a steakhouse could actually survive here. So, I did a little research before deciding to pay the restaurant a visit. It was rated 4. Their menu boasts a wide variety of choices — lamb, salmon, pasta, steaks, briskets, etc. I decided to try their steak — Who goes to a steakhouse and not try their steak? Just to highlight that their meats are sold according to weight. The meats are packed and sealed in individual plastic wraps with the price sticker attached. The meats were tender and soft. They managed to sear the meat perfectly on both sides, with the middle still reddish, and a bit of juice flowing — just how a steak should be prepared! The sauce — nicoise dressing and espagnole sauce beef juice that came with mains paired well with the meats. All steaks other than tomahawk steaks are served with homemade creamy mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables. Portions are fair, given the price. However, I do have a bone to pick with the mains. Afterwards, my friend and I were both very thirsty after the meal. Would I come back again? The last bit — feeling thirsty afterwards — has put me on the fence. But, this restaurant is no doubt the best steakhouse in Alor Setar. Though Alor Setar is the capital of the paddy state, Kedah, we have very few Japanese restaurant options available. Up till the past 5 years, I think Kaede was the only Japanese restaurant in town. This was my favourite childhood Japanese restaurant, and still is my favourite go-to restaurant in Alor Setar! There is ample parking outside their store. The store was also much bigger back then — with sitting on the floor table arrangements available sadly, this sitting option is no longer available at their current store. It was the right move though. Sentosa Plaza has since lost its appeal to Alor Setarians. Now, the plaza is mostly deserted and vacant on the upper floors. The restaurant is decently decorated. They have a mini water pond and a mini fountain right in the middle of the restaurant. They also have books and comics for you to read should you feel bored waiting for your food. Overall, it gives you that comfortable homey vibe. Food quality wise, one can not compare to the likes of those established Japanese restaurants, like Jyu Raku and Oukatsu in the big cities. For a small city like Alor Setar, this restaurant serves arguably the best Japanese food in town. My favourite back then was their Chicken Katsu set or also known back then as Bento C , but now my favourite is their Beef Steak set. I remember their Chicken Katsu being fried to perfection. The dipping sauce served together with it was the perfect combination for the crispy chicken katsu. My current favourite — beef steak on the other hand, is served in their special sauce, a mixture of miso and wasabi I think. My sister had their Shoyu Ramen. My sister likes it though. I do note that their food portions have somewhat shrunk since the time I first had it. But then again, they have not really increased their food prices since back then. Good pizza places are hard to come by in a small town like Alor Setar. Usually, when we think of pizza, the first two places that come to mind are Pizza Hut and Dominos. Furthermore, these two are franchises from abroad, whereas US Pizza is founded locally. Their menu is pretty extensive — they have 24 pizza flavours in total 10 traditional flavours; 10 signature flavours and 4 chef best flavours. They also offer off-menu seasonal pizzas from time to time. Generally, their pizzas are better than the likes of Pizza Hut and Dominos. In mere minutes, we chomped down several sauce-laden slices, leaving nothing but empty plates. Their toppings are generally more generous as compared to Pizza Hut and Dominos but US pizza is a slightly more expensive than them too. Malaysians are known to be creative, fusing the flavours that we know well and love, and elevate them by creating new food combos. Adding to the weird food combos that Malaysia already have, US Pizza has included one more onto the list — Indomie Pizza, into their seasonal pizza menu. As someone who loves Indomie, it sorta make sense. Cheese, eggs, chicken and red chilli are perfect condiments when having Indomie. Make it into a pizza, the only thing extra is the pizza dough. Overall, it tasted not bad. Overall, US Pizza proves to be a great place for pizzas and to chill. Highly recommended for pizza lovers! Alor Setar has changed quite a bit since my last trip home. Even with the ongoing pandemic, Alor Setar is flourishing. New cafes have been mushrooming all over town, and Mansion 28 is one of them. Once a bustling place, it is now a pale shadow of that former self. These days, the roads only busies up when the trains come into the new station further down the road. Then all is quiet again. Styled in the colonial architecture, Mansion 28 is one of the few bungalows that dotted Jalan Station. The grand old mansion was built in the s era, and which a fresh coat of paint and some minor renovations, it has been refurbished into a modern cafe, with its traditional elements intact. Once you step into the place, you get a sense of nostalgia — the high ceilings and the old switches. They also have instagrammable spots in the cafe itself. The staff were particularly friendly and attentive, greeting us and taking our temperatures when entered the premise. Food prices were exorbitant for Alor Setar standards — basically charging KL prices. Their menu choices were also rather limited. I wanted to try their Mansion Big Breakfast, but was told that it was only served till 12 noon. I felt that their Alfredo Pasta portion was too small and too dry. The duck that came with the pasta was on point though. The plating of their Salmon Eggs Benedict was aesthetically pleasing. I could also not taste the smokey taste from the salmon. My friend liked it, but I felt the dish to be just meh. Compared to the Alfredo Pasta, the portion was big enough for two. The grape cake was a novelty for me. The clear origins of the grape is unclear, but many believe it to have originated from the Middle East. Overall, I would say this place offers a suitable place to chill and catch up with friends, given that Alor Setar has only a few good hang-out spots. Other than the instagrammable ambiance and aesthetic plating of their dishes, the food served here is nothing to shout about, and prices are on the higher side. That is if you are game to take a walk and talk to the ever friendly folks around. You will learn quite a bit about the rich heritage of this place too. Looking for authentic Malay-style kampung food? Look no further! If you ever drop by Alor Setar, do try out this place! Fun Fact: According to Wikipedia , Gulai is a type of food containing rich, spicy and succulent curry-like sauce commonly found in Indonesia. Gulai is originated in Sumatra, Indonesia and is thought to be the local adaptation of Indian curry, developed and derived from Indian influence on Indonesian cuisine. I tried their Ikan Bakar Siakap fried fish , Gulai Temenung fish curry , sambal terung brinjal in sambal , fried chicken, fried egg, bergedil fried potato and some veggie. Give me Indian-style curry anytime! Their bergedil was nice! Overall, the meal came up to a total of RM It used to be only open from 11 PM onwards till 5 AM, and was the only stall open at that dark street. Fast forward to today, the street is now a much more vibrant place, hosting to more stores, giving the place more options for hungry late diners. Thus, being forced to conform, this store is now open from 8 PM onwards. This stall is run by a Chinese couple and is still being run by the same couple after all these years. Friendly reminder : As this is an open-air stall, do try to bring some mosquito repellent or wear long pants. Otherwise, while you feast on your bowl of noodles, the mosquito will feast on your blood as well. So how this works is that you will take the bowl available on the table and select whatever add-ons you want. Also, try dipping the yu cha kueh add-on into the curry! It still is as popular as when I first got to know about this place. On only very rare occasions there would no queue. Parking is also quite hard to find, since the stall is at the road side after all, and many other stores have mushroomed out since then, occupying even more parking space. Expect to find it hard to get a parking on the same street as the stall. There are usually parking available in the next street or the street before. Overall, it can get a little pricey as compared to the other eateries in Alor Setar. Opening hours: 8 pm — 3.
