Macau's casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) is likely to be negatively affected this month as mainland and Macau authorities crack down on unauthorized currency exchange inside and outside the city's gaming venues, several industry commentators suggested in remarks to GGRcia.

"It's difficult, but this currency exchange deal is a source of funding for domestic gaming activities," said Wu Yiohong, a veteran junket president in Macau.

Macau bets are mostly denominated in Hong Kong dollars, with most players from mainland China, with jurisdictions imposing limits on the amount of mainland currencies that can be physically transported across the border per trip.

Hoffman Mahoman, vice chairman of Hong Kong Listed Success Universe Group, an investor in Ponte 16 casino resorts near Inner Harbor in Macau, added that the move will likely most likely impact players at the public level, a larger sector than VIP.

Game users most affected by the crackdown "will not be those with a lot of net assets or who come to Macau often," Ma said, as they generally have their own funding channels in addition to having to rely on these [unfair currency] ads.

Gaming consultant Ben Lee suggested that Beijing's crackdown could also affect some VIPs and the so-called premium mass sector.

"The amount of money they gamble on is well above the limit they can carry across the border, so it's likely to be affected by VIP/premium," he told GGRAsia.

"Some grinders, especially those who need funds above the daily ATM limit, will also be affected," said Lee, managing director of IGamiX Management and Consulting Ltd.
