It might be hard to imagine why it is a big deal to go public about one's sexuality. Especially for celebrities, their coming out can ruin their reputation. On the other hand, they may not want to continue living in a closet, keeping their sexuality a secret. This would be an enormous burden to them. Gay or lesbian, I think we should embrace their talent!
Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947, Elton John is one of the most successful and bestselling artists of all time. His songs "Candle in the Wind" and "Crocodile Rock", among others, have become virtual classics in the history of popular music. In a 1976 Rolling Stone interview, he talked about bisexuality. Later he married Renate Blauel in 1984 and when he divorced her four years later, he told Rolling Stone he was "comfortable" being gay. He met his Canadian boyfriend, David Furnish in 1993 and in 2014, they were married. They have two sons, Zachary and Elijah, both born to a surrogate mother.
Ellen DeGeneres, born in 1958 is an American stand-up comedienne, television host and actress. She hosts the syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show. DeGeneres was in a relationship with actress Anne Heche from 1997 to 2000 and in 1997, she came out publicly as a lesbian in an Oprah Winfrey Show. Since 2004, she has been in a relationship with former Ally McBeal and Arrested Development star Portia De Rossi. After the overturn of the same-sex marriage ban in California, DeGeneres announced in May 2008 that she and De Rossi were engaged, and gave De Rossi a three-carat pink diamond ring. They were married in August 2008 at their home in Beverly Hills.
Portia De Rossi (Born Amanda Lee Rogers in 1973) is an Australian actress best known for her roles as lawyer in Nelle Porter and Ally McBeal. She was married to a documentary film maker Mel Metcalfe from 1996 to 1999. According to her memoir "Unbearable Lightness", during the time she was married to Metcalfe, she became interested in a woman who lived in the same apartment complex with whom she started a relationship. From 2000 to 2004, she dated singer Francesca Gregorini. She broke up with Gregorini as she began dating Ellen DeGeneres whom she met backstage at an awards show. In 2005, she opened up publicly about her sexual orientation in interviews with Details and The Advocate. She recently explained in an interview that as a young actress she was fearful of being exposed as a lesbian. She has been married to Ellen DeGeneres since August 2008.
Anderson Hays Cooper (born June 3, 1967) is an American journalist, television personality, and author. He is the primary anchor of the CNN news show Anderson Cooper 360. He is openly gay and according to The New York Times, he is "the most prominent openly gay journalist on American television". On July 2, 2012, he published an email that stated "...the fact is I`m gay, I always have been, always will be, and I couldn`t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud". Cooper and his boyfriend, gay bar owner Benjamin Maisani, have been dating since 2009. In 2014 the couple purchased the Rye House, a historic estate in Connecticut.
After Cooper split with Maisani, he became a father to a boy in April 2020. His son was born via a surrogate and was named Wyatt Morgan. Cooper revealed that although he has not gotten back together with Maisani, he will co parent their son. Cooper says he still considers Maisani family.
Elliot Grace Philpotts-Page (formerly Ellen) born February 21, 1987, known professionally as Elliot Page, is a Canadian Actor. His breakthrough role was the title character in Jason Retiman`s comedy film Juno (2007) for which he received nominations for Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor. In February 2014, Page came out as gay during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign`s "Time to Thrive" Conference in Las Vegas. In September 2015, Page confirmed that he was in a relationship with artist and surfer Samantha Thomas with whom he walked the red carpet for the world premiere of the film "Freeheld" at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Elliot and Samantha split after 18 months and after just a few months, Elliot started a relationship with Emma Portner, a dancer and contemporary jazz teacher in 2018. The relationship began when Elliot became transfixed with Emma`s photo on instagram. They have also posted their nude pose on instagram where they are seen hugging each other. Page announced his marriage to Emma Portner in January 2018.
On December 1, 2020 Page came out as transgender on his social media accounts, specified his pronouns as he/him or they/them and revealed his new name, Elliot Page.
Ricky Martin (born Enrique Martin Morales in 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican pop singer and actor. He has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, first as a member of a boyband Menudo, and since 1991, as a solo artist. Martin had a relationship with Rebecca de Alba for over fourteen years. Although they talked of starting a family together, their relationship eventually ended. In 2008, Martin became a father of twin boys, Matteo and Valentino via a surrogate mother. In March 2010, Martin publicly acknowledged his homosexuality in a post on his official website by stating "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man". Beginning April 2016, he started dating Syrian-Swedish painter Jwan Yosef. The two announced their engagement on November 16, 2016 while on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. On December 31, 2018, the couple welcomed a daughter, Lucia Martin-Yosef, and on October 29, 2019, their son Renn Martin-Yosef was born. All four of their children were born via a surrogate mother. Martin stated that he wants his family to be seen as a normal family and nothing else.
Martina Navratilova (born in 1956) is a Czech-American tennis player and former world No. 1. Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and 31 Grand Slam women's doubles titles. Both of these are all-time records. She is arguably one of the greatest tennis players in the history of tennis. In 1981, shortly after becoming a U.S. citizen, she came out publicly as a lesbian. (This was shocking to me as a teenager!) She was in a relationship with author Rita Mae Brown around this time. From 1984 to 1991 Navratilova had a long term relationship with author Judy Nelson who was married with two children. Their split caused a much-publicized legal wrangle. She was then in a relationship with Toni Layton which also involved a legal battle upon their split. Navratilova proposed to her long time girlfriend Julia Lemigova, who was a former Russian model, at the U.S. Open in September 2014 and were married in New York on December 15, 2014.
Jodie Foster (born Alicia Christian Foster on November 19,1962) is a two time Oscar winner and one of the few actresses to enjoy a long career since making her screen debut as a child in 1972. She is a graduate of Yale University and has received the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2013 at the 70th Golden Globe Awards. She came out in her speech after receiving this award. After a long term relationship with Cydney Bernard from 1993 to 2008 during which time she had two sons, she married actress and photographer Alexandra Hedison in 2014. Hedison was previously in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. Foster and Hedison live in Los Angeles.

Billie Jean King (born Billie Jean Moffitt in 1943) is a former professional tennis player. She won 12 Grand Slam Singles titles, 16 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She married Lawrence King in 1965 and in 1971 she had an abortion, and later explained in her autobiography that she decided on the abortion because she believed her marriage was not solid enough to bring a child into her family. The same year, while still married, she began an intimate relationship with her secretary, Marilyn Barnett. King was forced to acknowledge the relationship when it became public in 1981. She divorced Lawrence King in 1987. She confessed in 2007 that she had concealed her sexuality for so many years because her parents were homophobic. She ended up with an eating disorder due to the emotional burden of hiding her sexuality, and at the age of 51, she was finally able to talk about it properly with her parents. She is now in a relationship with Ilana Kloss, former professional tennis player. The two reside in New York City.

I became interested of this topic out of suspicion but I don't want to elaborate on that because the person involved is very close to my heart...
Actually being gay or lesbian is something personal. My bestfriend was gay, his family is really conservative and he knows that being gay is prohibited in his religion so he try to have relationship with some women for 3 years and now their married. Last time i contact him, he said that he's totally changed. I hope he have a great marriage untill the end. Well i think this condition can be changed because environment is really important in this case. As long as we want to change everything can possible.

Some older celebrities have come out recently after being in the closet for decades -- Barry Manilow, Jim Nabors, Richard Chamberlain. Their careers are virtually over so they weren't risking much. I really admire the young actress, Ellen Page, for coming out and speaking out. She is risking a lot in terms of her career. She may not receive a lot of offers to play straight women. We will see...

I agree with you, oldiesmusic. Torrilynn, it's sometimes hard to acknowledge the fact that celebrities are also humans like ourselves, because, as you say, they are rich. They also often live a privileged life, but they want to love and to be loved like normal human beings.

Some of these people have suffered greatly because they were found out to be gay. I remember how the public reacted to George Michael, and Ricky Martin had to go back to Puerto Rico because of criticism. Poor George got hooked on drugs because he was given flack about his appearance and sexuality. I think it's brave when they can come out against a world of judgement and declare who they are.
I pray for the day when sexuality becomes and non-issue. No one questions me because I am heterosexual, so why the hell question another's sexuality? I just don't get it.
I know Boy George and Jon Moss had affair as long as their culture club carrier. But in the end, I think they just use it to control each other.
I have my girl friend since 1992 and we went ups and downs. If love is true same sex does not matter.

I’m sure that it must be very difficult for any celebrity to live their lives so publicly, gay or straight. It must be even more challenging to have to live their life as a gay person in the public eye.
These individuals should be judge on their talents and their contribution to their craft, not on their chosen romantic partners.
I applaud their courage to live their lives openly as gay individuals because it must add to the quality of their work as a celebrity.

More often than not (at least from what I've seen), a homosexual relationship seems stronger and more sincere and loving than a relationship between heterosexual husband/wife and boyfriend/girlfriend. Because they are of the same sex, they totally understand each other's body language, needs and sensitivities. I'm not lesbian myself but I have gay and lesbian friends and they are fabulous. Ricky Martin's boyfriend is not Spanish...he is Puerto Rican. Ricky Martin obtained Spanish Citizenship, not to marry there, but for his artistic merits and because his great-grandmother was Spanish-born.

You're right. I just learned from a presentation at a group I belong to that in Oscar Wilde's days, being a homosexual was a serious crime. Oscar Wilde actually spent some time in jail when his sexuality was exposed. Compared to those days, we have come a long way!
I personally think finding out that you are gay or a lesbian does not mean its the end of the world, i love having friends who are gay or a lesbian they make the best friends.
