I don't really care too much about the new host but she seems a little off.
Last season whenever the camera was on Molly she was all smiles, sweet as honey. As soon as they stopped rolling she looked like she ate a shit sandwich. She obviously hated being there.
Sam was obviously engaged. She liked being there and was obviously having a good time. She talked to the builders, she engaged the fans, and watched the fights. I think she was a major improvement.
And unlike Molly, Sam never looked like she had to pee on stage :)
Yeah man, she usually hid it well, but that did leak through the facade a little bit. Her smile always seemed a bit pinched, forced, and purely professional. I guess that they decided they had enough robots on the show already. Glad to see that Sam isn't that way. She does come across a lot better IMO.
I had figured as much, Ray. Molly was there solely for the $$$.
I had the opposite experience -- I found Sam, the new host, to be a vast improvement, and thought Molly was the weak link of the cast last season. Molly came off as overly polished, and didn't really seem genuine about the whole thing; she was the only member of the cast that you got the impression was there to play a part and collect a paycheck rather than to watch robots fight to the death. Sam did a much better job at playing off the crowd and Chris/Kenny, and seemed much more genuinely enthusiastic about the whole thing.
Related, I also thought that Chris and Kenny both showed notable improvements from season 1. Their roles as play-by-play and color seemed much better defined, they were less prone to having complete thoughts interrupted by "oh my god shrapnel," and Kenny's strategic insight in particular seemed much more in-depth and accurate. And I don't think the phrase "jam up" was uttered even once!
they went around the pits and talked to all of us to gather info about the bots, builders and strategy. it was pretty cool that they did and so far its been showing in their commentary
The cast is showing improvement, practice makes perfect, Kenny in particular is doing great [checking out more details about the sport!] ( https://www.facebook.com/86379370812/photos/a.10153243316380813.1073741827.86379370812/10153866653275813/?type=3&theater )
I do love the "OH MY GOD!" moments, because it was like watching someone actually watching live battlebots for the first time and seeing their reaction.
This is true, I can confirm that "jam up" didn't make an appearance in The Gears Awaken, and lord only knows there were plenty of opportunities for it. XD
Something neat about the taping of the show is that the commentary for the fights in TGA were all taped at the venue itself, presumably because this episode needed to be out the door less than a month after the event itself. For all the other fights I'm assuming they are doing a hybrid of taking what was recorded live and mixing in some studio-taped commentary recorded after the fact. (So in that regard, there's still a chance Kenny might say it.)
I genuinely don't get the point of her. She, and her role, seems to be completely interchangeable.
Just have Alison Haislip walk the twenty metres to that box and do her job if you really need someone to bounce Kenny and Chris off of. Plus it makes sense to have someone who is in the pit there for segments where they pick likely winners and discuss what happened, she is the perfect vehicle to impart knowledge. Meanwhile K and C watch all the fights up close so have that side of knowledge. Molly and not-Molly are glorified audience members.
If you are bringing in a fourth it should be a Nye figure who can tell you how a kinetic energy equation works, not a non science interchangeable actress host figure who has no connection to the sport or science in general.
YouTube is littered with smart geeky women if we have to do woman to balance it out. I doubt ABC wants to go that way but it makes more sense.
If you are bringing in a fourth it should be a Nye figure
You're right though, in regards to the lady anchor. Sam is a step above Molly, but she still suffers from the same issue of whether or not she's necessary. I mean, I can tell you WHY she's there, but it's really just a bunch of speculation on modern-day TV production tropes that major networks end up adhering to because it keeps the riff-raff watching.
I forget her name, but the hostess from Junkyard Wars and Philippa Forrester from Robot Wars are proof enough that you can find a woman host who is both A) attractive and B) knows her way around an engine. Why they don't just find someone like her puzzles me.
There is no need for a Barbie Doll on this show and it's demeaning to women just having her there. Get someone on there with an engineering degree and actually knows about robotics.
YouTube is littered with people "who could do it" because everyone thinks it's easy to do. In truth, it takes a real network pro to host a major network show. If some web host stood up there, it wouldn't look right or sound polished. You wouldn't be able to put your finger on it, but it would feel "off".
There's how many hundred crew working there, hitting overtime if they work past a certain point? Can you imagine the stress of delays of a semi-pro host needing retakes? (Weren't there mega delays last year?)
You need a host to tie the different segments together and it doesn't work when your color guys do it.
Samantha has room for improvement, but I'm of the opinion she did a better job than Molly. Though I didn't get a chance to talk to her, I believe she considers Battlebots to be more fun than Molly did.
As for the rest of the crew - Alison legitimately enjoys the sport and wants to learn more. So does Kenny - we actually had a good talk about the 'jam,' and his commentary's improved. For Chris, I got mixed signals - I'm a bit worried about whether he views this as 'just another job' or not, but his commentary was a lot better than last year, and I hope he(and the rest of the cast) come back the same next year.
Also of the opinion that Faruq loves Battlebots as much as Mark Beiro used to. I can tell he has a true love for the sport and is thrilled to participate in the production.
I never talked to either Chris or Kenny personally, but they both seemed happy to engage the fans and looked like they were having a good time. Whether or not Chris is actually a fan, he's a well-known sportscaster who was willing to come back, so I definitely appreciate him for that.
Molly was ridiculously hot. I will miss her.
See for me, as weird as this sounds, she was almost too hot, like overly perfect like some sort of plastic doll that couldn't be real. It was almost like an uncanny valley effect or something.
