Alison Brie is opening up about GLOW getting canceled by Netflix almost two years later. The actor has moved on to other projects but the show about female wrestlers still has a special place in her heart.
“It’s the great heartbreak of my career,” Brie told Decider about the show getting cut by the streamer. “But it will forever live on as, like, this great thing. I loved working on it — maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! — and I miss it a lot. But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show.”
Netflix had picked up GLOW for a fourth and final season in August 2019 but reversed its decision when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The show had already been in production of the final season for about three weeks when filming was shut down amid the coronavirus outbreak. It would be in October 2020 when the streaming service would announce that production for the series would not resume .
“Yeah, it was surprising!” Brie said of the cancellation. “But it was sort of eclipsed by the shock of everything that was happening globally. [Laughs] You know, so in a way, it was almost like it put things in perspective.”
Over the lifetime of the show, GLOW earned 15 Emmy nominations and received three wins. The short-lived series was set in the 1980s and revolved around Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s pro wrestling.

The 34-year-old plays Ruth Wilder, a determined Los Angeles actress in the 1980s, who ends up unknowingly auditioning for a place as a Gorgeous Lady of Wrestling. But before the end of the Netflix show's first instalment finishes, viewers have already been subjected to an unspeakable betrayal and full-frontal nudity from the character.
Ruth's best friend Debbie's husband climbed through the window into her room unexpectedly following the character's initial introduction to the world of female wrestling, but as she attempted to send him away, the truth was revealed that the characters have already shared a drunken passionate tryst.
Even though she claimed that she didn't want a repeat of the mistake, all it took was one powerful speech and the scene cut to Ruth completely naked and riding the married man.
At some moments she's totally sexless and determined
While the scene was darkly lit, Brie's assets could be clearly seen bobbing up and down as her character lost herself to the moment in reckless abandon. But when Ruth's sexual partner kept giving her compliments, she attempted to drown him out.
"You are so real, you are the most real person I've ever met," he said, to which Ruth responded telling him to “shh".
The Community actress has never been afraid of trying new things, and Brie recently revealed what attracted her to a remake of the series, which itself is based on a real-life wrestling club at the time.
"I was drawn to the complexity of this character and the tone of the show overall. I like that she is a shapeshifter," she said.
However, even given the events of the series' first episode, the actress also said that she thinks her character could be described as "sexless".
"At some moments she's totally sexless and determined, and then other moments she's doing this outrageous, horrible thing to her friend.
"I do think barring that first episode, which is a huge part of what the character is, the rest of the time it's a main part of her focus," the star told A.V. CLUB.
The actress also added that she thinks this aspect to Ruth is what makes her unsuccessful as an actress, adding: "She's not good at playing into those flirty games that actresses are expected to play."
The entire first season of GLOW is available to watch on Netflix now.

If you still can’t quite wrap your head, much less your heart, around the fact that GLOW was renewed for a fourth season that we never wound up getting, you are by no means alone. Leading lady Alison Brie feels your pain — acutely. The cancellation of the beloved Netflix dramedy is “the great heartbreak of my career,” she tells Decider .
“But,” she hastens to add, “it will forever live on as, like, this great thing.”
That, it will. Nonetheless, the way that the series centered on ’80s sensations the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling was picked up for a final season by the streamer in the fall of 2019, then given the chop when the COVID pandemic hit, will always make some of us cranky. Not Brie, though. “I loved working on it — maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! — and I miss it a lot,” she says. “But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show.”
The veteran of Mad Men and Community was as taken aback by the reversal of GLOW ’s renewal as anyone in the audience. “Yeah, it was surprising,” she says. “But it was sort of eclipsed by the shock of everything that was happening globally.
“You know, so in a way,” she concludes with a laugh, “it was almost like it put things in perspective.”
What do you think would have happened, had we gotten a Season 4 of GLOW ? Would Brie’s Ruth have gotten together with Sam? Hit the comments with your theories.

Still disappointed in the GLOW cancellation. Would love to see the fourth season some day, but I know that will probably never happen.
It still smarts. Couldn’t they have just delayed the production schedule? I mean, c’mon. Still hoping they’ll get that final season
I always hoped this would get a wrap up movie, but given netflixs history of 3 and down, I highly doubt any kind of continuation will ever happen…Glow and Mindhunter were 2 of my favs on Netflix and it sucks never getting that proper conclusion. It makes it hard to invest in netflix original shows.
This was definitely one of the cancellations that hurt the most. Right up there with Pushing Daisies (I STILL miss that show and hope for a revival)
Ugh, Pushing Daisies. I’ll never get over that one. One of the most charming and unique shows of the past couple decades. Such a shame.
Glow is the best show I have seen in a very long time. I hope they make a movie but sad they are not renewing the show.
GLOW is the best show Netflix has ever done.
GLOW’s first season was amazing. It reminded me of Glee in the best way. Although it didn’t jump the shark like Glee did but last season was very disappointing.
That cancelled because of COVID made NO SENSE.
WWE, AEW, and IMPACT Wrestling which are actual wrestling shows were still happening. All Netflix had to do was check to see what they were doing and continue along with production of Season 4.
It’s Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, not Glorious.
You are entirely correct. Fixed, tx. Also, they were pretty glorious, too. ;)
