Alexandre Dumas, der Autor der berühmten Drei Musketiere, kannte die französische Geschichte des 16. bis 17. Jahrhunderts gut. Vor uns liegt das Leben der Helden voller Schwierigkeiten. Hier ist Porthos, der erst reich wurde, nachdem er einen Staatsanwalt geheiratet hatte – eine Frau wohlhabender, aber unedler Herkunft; Aramis ist genauso arm wie sein Kamerad und kauft sich mit dem Geld seiner Freundin Ausrüstung.
Athos hat königliches Blut in seinen Adern; er ist anmutig, edel, klug – das ist derselbe ideale Adlige, über den wir zuvor gesprochen haben. Aber trotz all seiner herausragenden Qualitäten ist Athos nicht reich und muss das Leben eines angeheuerten Soldaten führen. Mehrmals spricht er mit Ironie vom unbedeutenden Preis des Menschenlebens – schließlich gehört ein Adliger, der im Dienst steht, nicht sich selbst, sondern ist völlig abhängig vom Willen des Monarchen.
Denken Sie daran, dass drei Freunde bei der ersten Gelegenheit den Dienst im Regiment der Musketiere verlassen; sie wird nur von d'Artagnan fortgesetzt, dem Ärmsten und Ehrgeizigsten von allen. Athos hingegen verachtet die Hektik des Hoflebens und hasst Kardinal Richelieu (siehe Artikel „Richelieu“), der die Freiheit des Adels einschränkte, Zweikämpfe verbot und den Adel in vielerlei Hinsicht mit anderen Ständen gleichsetzte.
Der Ritter des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies, ein kultivierter Aristokrat, dessen Gesellschaft in der Taverne aus groben Soldaten besteht – das ist natürlich kein ganz wahres Porträt eines Adligen des 17. Jahrhunderts. Er ist ganz anders als der „ideale Höfling“, der in dem berühmten Werk „Der Höfling“ des Italieners Baldassare Castiglione dargestellt wird. Wo ist die Wahrheit? Wer ist er, ein Adliger des ausgehenden Mittelalters und des beginnenden Neuen Zeitalters, ein wahrer Schöpfer der europäischen Kultur, ein furchtloser Entdecker des Neuen, ein hochgebildeter Mensch, ein Förderer der Wissenschaften oder ein völlig entladenes Nichts, ein Konsument, der einer neuen fortgeschrittenen Klasse Platz macht - der Bourgeoisie?
Der einfachste Weg ist zu sagen, dass beide Bilder wahr sind, aber keines ist ganz genau. Versuchen wir, die Figur eines Adligen etwas anders, unvoreingenommener zu beleuchten.
Zweifellos war es die adelige Kultur, die versuchte, das Ideal eines umfassend entwickelten Menschen zu verwirklichen, der ein vollwertiges Mitglied der Gesellschaft ist und gleichzeitig ein reiches inneres spirituelles Leben führt (bis dahin die Mitte Jahrhunderte haben diese Aspekte des Lebens in den Bildern eines Ritters und eines Mönchs gegenübergestellt). Gleichzeitig glaubten die Adligen, dass nur diejenigen Menschen, die mit „angeborenem Adel“ und dem Recht, ihr eigenes Schicksal unabhängig zu bestimmen, ausgestattet waren, eine solche Harmonie erreichen könnten. Aber es stellte sich bald heraus, dass die persönliche Perfektion eines Menschen nicht vom Adel seiner Herkunft abhängt (davon sprachen übrigens italienische Humanisten im 15. Jahrhundert).
Es stellt sich heraus, dass die Adligen dem neuen Europa das Ideal einer umfassend entwickelten Person „gegeben“ haben. Für sich selbst „hinterließen“ sie ein Gefühl tiefer Lebensenttäuschung, Unzufriedenheit und Sehnsucht. Von außen könnte es scheinen, als ob Unglaube an Gott, eine allgemeine kritische Haltung und sogar Zynismus, der sich unter den Adligen ausbreitete, die Vorwärtsbewegung störten. Diese Merkmale der geistigen und seelischen Struktur irritierten die Vertreter der Bourgeoisie, die fanatisch an Gott und Fortschritt glaubten. Aber im Laufe der Zeit stellte sich heraus, dass diese Merkmale des edlen Bewusstseins für das neue Europa nützlich waren. Sie waren praktisch, als die erste Begeisterung für die revolutionären Veränderungen des New Age verflogen war, als die Europäer wieder über ihr historisches Schicksal nachdachten ...

Das Leben der Bauern im Mittelalter war hart, voller Mühsal und Prüfungen. Hohe Steuern, verheerende Kriege und Ernteausfälle beraubten den Bauern oft des Nötigsten und zwangen ihn, nur ans Überleben zu denken. Noch vor 400 Jahren stießen Reisende in Frankreich, dem reichsten Land Europas, auf Dörfer, deren Bewohner in schmutzige Lumpen gekleidet waren, in Halbunterständen lebten, Löcher in den Boden gruben und so wild wurden, dass sie auf Fragen nicht antworten konnten ein einziges artikuliertes Wort aussprechen. Es überrascht nicht, dass im Mittelalter die Vorstellung vom Bauern als halb Tier, halb Teufel weit verbreitet war; die Worte "villan", "villania", die die Dorfbewohner bezeichneten, bedeuteten gleichzeitig "Rohheit, Ignoranz, Bestialität".
Kein Grund zu glauben, dass alle Bauern im mittelalterlichen Europa wie Teufel oder Lumpen aussahen. Nein, viele Bauern hatten Goldmünzen und elegante Kleider in ihren Truhen versteckt, die sie an Feiertagen trugen; Bauern wussten, wie man sich auf Dorfhochzeiten amüsiert, wenn Bier und Wein wie Wasser flossen und jeder sich in einer ganzen Reihe von halb verhungerten Tagen aß. Die Bauern waren schlagfertig und gerissen, sie sahen deutlich die Verdienste und Nachteile der Menschen, mit denen sie sich in ihrem einfachen Leben auseinandersetzen mussten: ein Ritter, ein Kaufmann, ein Priester, ein Richter. Wenn die Feudalherren die Bauern als Teufel betrachteten, die aus Höllenlöchern kriechen, dann bezahlten die Bauern ihre Herren mit derselben Münze: ein Ritter, der mit einem Rudel Jagdhunde durch die gesäten Felder eilt, das Blut eines anderen vergießt und auf deren Kosten lebt der Arbeit eines anderen, erschien ihnen nicht als Mensch, sondern als Dämon.
Es ist allgemein anerkannt, dass der Feudalherr der Hauptfeind des mittelalterlichen Bauern war. Die Beziehung zwischen ihnen war wirklich kompliziert. Mehr als einmal erhoben sich die Dorfbewohner, um gegen ihre Herren zu kämpfen. Sie töteten Senioren, plünderten und steckten ihre Burgen in Brand, eroberten Felder, Wälder und Wiesen. Die größten dieser Aufstände waren die Jacquerie (1358) in Frankreich, die von Wat Tyler (1381) angeführten Reden und die Ke-tov-Brüder (1549) in England. Eines der wichtigsten Ereignisse in der Geschichte Deutschlands war der Bauernkrieg von 1525.
