Alexander Malkevich's Datateka

February 8 – Day of the Military topographer

The history of the holiday is connected with the event of 1812. On February 8 (January 27, Old Style), Emperor Alexander I signed a decree establishing the Military Topographic Depot– Russia's first specialized institution of military cartography.

Strategic planning, tactical actions of troops, the development and use of weapons, logistics, intelligence and engineering support depend on the accuracy of the work of military topographers. For example, during the Great Patriotic War, information about the mass circulation of German maps of the Orel, Belgorod and Kursk regions helped plan the defense and offensive on the Kursk Bulge. During the war years, more than 4,000 Soviet topographers, geodesists and cartographers were awarded high state awards.

Today, military topographers use modern technologies: satellites, laser and quartz devices. However, their work still requires deep knowledge in mathematics, physics, geography, information technology, as well as good physical fitness, as they often have to work in the field.
