Former adult film star Bree Olson has a message for young girls: Don’t get into porn.
Olson was one of Charlie Sheen’s live-in “goddesses” who shared his home with other women during his 2011 meltdown.
Olson estimates she was making $30,000 to $60,000 a month in the adult film industry before she gave up her career and parted ways with Sheen.
Since then, she’s been trying to transition into mainstream life, but it hasn’t been easy. Olson shared her struggles in a video for the digital interview series, “ Real Women, Real Stories .”
She said she has trouble finding work and making friends. No one wants anything to do with her after they find out about her former life. Without giving details, she said people who recognize her in public call her ugly, demeaning names.
“When I go out, I feel as if I’m wearing ‘slut’ across my forehead,” she said in the video interview, which was posted online last week and is making the rounds in feminist circles on social media.
“I have really gotten to the point where there are days to weeks at time where I don’t leave the house because I don’t feel like facing the world,” she said. “People treat me as if I am a pedophile. They don’t treat me like an ex-sex worker. They treat me like I would somehow be damaging to children.”
Olson, 29, moved recently from Los Angeles to Fort Wayne, Indiana. In an email interview with CNN she said she left the porn industry in 2011 and tried to launch several businesses that failed. She now works reluctantly as a cam model, a term for men and women who perform sex acts on live webcams for Internet customers. She has a girlfriend, and Bree Olson is not her real name.
Olson said she agreed to do the video interview — recorded last year at her home in L.A. — to offer an honest take on the porn industry and its effects on female stars of adult films.
The curator of “Real Women, Real Stories,” Matan Uziel, told CNN he launched the series to empower women by highlighting their struggles, challenging stereotypes and raising money for causes that support girls’ and women’s education.
“Today, unfortunately women are seriously under-represented across nearly all sectors of society around the globe. I believe that with that proper exposure, we can minimize the destruction and even reverse some negative trends against women,” he told CNN in an email. “In our next episodes, we want to keep spotlighting provocative stories about women that you don’t get to access through magazines and reality television.”
When Olson is asked in the video how she would like to be treated, the question appears to catch her off guard. She brings her hands to her mouth, falling silent as tears fill her eyes.
“I wish people would treat me like they would treat a married registered nurse with 2.5 kids in Indiana. That’s how I wish people would treat me,” she said, wiping away tears.
“I would be so happy,” she continues. “I never even thought of that before. But it will never happen. That’s probably why I don’t think about it.”
Olson told CNN the backlash she’s faced over her work in porn has killed her dreams of having children.
“I’ll never put a child through this,” she said. “Even with the best private education and great parenting, the parents will talk and the children will hear and my child would be ostracized.”
She also fears that her past will derail her goal of having a traditional career.
“I’d love to go back to college and work for some amazing company, be it health care, children, some other type of firm, and I’d work my way right to the top — but I am hit with harsh realities constantly,” she told CNN.
“People say, change your hair color, move to another state. Ha! People know me by voice alone. I can’t run. I can’t hide. I have to face this. Anonymity is something I’ll never know. Even with all the surgeries, relocating, years of school, all it takes is one person to blow everything,” she said.
“The only way to have power at this point is to own it. Yeah, I did porn, and thanks to this society that’s all I can say I’ve done.”
In the video, Olson says there’s nothing inherently wrong with porn or with women embracing their sexuality. Even so, she cautions young women against entering the adult film industry because of how society will treat them.
“I send a very strong message to young girls: Don’t do porn,” she said. “You’re just going to have a life of crap in front of you in dealing with people, companies,” she said, describing how employers can turn you down based on past experience or “morality clauses.”
“These are things that teenage girls don’t think (about),” she said. “There’s nothing wrong with porn, but how people treat you for the rest of your life, it’s not worth it.”

Household name: Former porn actress Jenna Jameson is well known but the personal details of thousands of adult entertainment performers have been leaked online
A Los Angeles health clinic that caters to porn actors is investigating allegations that patient information was leaked to a web site.
The Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation said yesterday it is investigating the possibility that its medical record database was breached to supply information for a web site called Pornwikileaks.com.
The names, dates of births and addresses of more than 15,000 adult film stars gave been published on the site and it is feared the leak could have huge recriminations for former actors who have since quit the business.
While porn stars like Jenna Jameson have made no secrets of their real identities, hundreds more have concealed their employment in the adult entertainment business from their families and friends.
The depth of information published on the site has led many to believe that the data comes from computers at the AIM Health Care Foundation, where adult performers are regularly tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
The San Fernando Valley clinic maintains an online database accessible to hundreds of porn producers, allowing them to view private medical information about actors, including results of HIV testing.
However, the AIM clinic says substantial amounts of information posted on the site are not stored in its database.
Jeffery Douglas, an attorney for the clinic, did not confirm yesterday whether AIM has referred to the data breach to the police.
'If such a breach occurred, we shall take all available steps to see that the felonious behavior is criminally prosecuted to the maximum extent under the law,' added a statement from the clinic.
'Accessing a database for improper purposes, violating medical privacy and extortion are all crimes in California.'
Pornwikileaks.com is registered in the Netherlands but the ownership and intent of the site remains unclear.
Former porn actor Donny Long has denied claims he is involved with the site, telling the LA Times he has 'nothing to do with [Pornwikileaks.com] other than being a member there'.
Adult entertainment blogger Mike South has claimed performers have told him they believe the information published this week must have come from AIM, which was briefly closed last year after health officials denied its application to operate as a community clinic for 'business-related issues'.
Secretive industry: The pornwikileaks website could have a huge impact on the lives of performers who have kept their work secret, as well as those who have quit the industry

A fourth porn actor has reported testing positive for HIV, increasing concern that there is an outbreak among adult entertainment performers.
Two performers - Cameron Bay and Rod Daily - have come forward and announced that they tested positive, but the third individual who was infected has remained anonymous.
A moratorium is ongoing on shooting in the adult film industry following the news of a fourth performer testing positive for the disease.
Diagnosed: Rod Daily, 32, announced via Twitter that he was recently diagnosed with HIV
Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation told the LA Times , that a fourth porn star had contacted the organization.
Mr Weinstein said: 'We were approached by a male performer who told us he had tested positive' but declined to give further details.
The adult film industry is considering increasing the frequency with which its stars take HIV tests from 28 to 14 days however a decision is yet to be made.
Radar Online reported that 'a dozen female performers have been quarantined as a result of exposure'.
After Cameron Bay came out as being infected, a brief moratorium was issued that stopped all productions of pornographic films, but that was lifted just days later.
When Rod Daily announced via Twitter that he had tested positive for HIV less than two weeks after Bay made her announcement, he advocated for further precautions to be taken.
'Drumroll please!! I'm 32 years old and I'm HIV positive. Acute HIV, which means I recently was infected. For that I am blessed,' Daily wrote on Twitter last Tuesday.
'I'm blessed for the fact that I caught it so early that I can blast that s*** with meds.
'With the tests I have done the doctors have figured out that I was infected within the last month...My antibodies just showed up on a test this week which is scary because they didn't a week ago,' he said in two other tweets.
A trade group representing producers of pornographic movies in Los Angeles called on any of Daily's sexual partners to be tested for the virus.
Positive attitude: Daily, who has been in the adult film industry for eight years, said that hopefully this will encourage porn stars to wear condoms
Out in the open: Daily announced his positive diagnosis on Twitter last week
The group said it could not yet confirm whether Daily truly had contracted the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, but it warned his partners to be tested.
The Free Speech Coalition were the ones to confirm on August 22 that the actress who goes by the name of Cameron Bay was also infected with HIV.
Daily has been linked romantically to Bay on the adult film industry website XBiz.com.
