Monday’s episode of Roswell, New Mexico was brought to you by the number three.
While the eventful hour left us with much to discuss, from Max and Liz re-doing their courtship to Isobel dirty dancing with Kyle at a gay bar, there’s one particular moment that truly took us by surprise — Alex, Michael and Maria’s threesome. Fortunately, Heather Hemmens was on hand to talk us through it:
TVLINE | This feels like a weird thing to say, but this made me want to stand up and cheer. I’ve always wondered why more TV love triangles don’t end in threesomes.
[ Laughs ] I know, right? Just try it!
TVLINE | How was this development presented to you?
I was informed about the threesome before the scripts even went out. I spoke with [executive producer Carina Adly MacKenzie] about how it was going to happen, because she wanted to make sure I was comfortable with the storyline. When I read it, I gave her my feedback, which was, “Holy crap, yes! Let’s do it.” After reading it and really understanding it, I just thought, “This is what the audience deserves.”
TVLINE | And it was tastefully done, I thought.
I thought so, too. Sometimes when you hear about a threesome, you think, “Whoa, are we staying on brand here?” But I read it and thought it totally made sense. All you even see is a little bit of kissing. It’s intimate and emotional, and it’s Maria’s choice. It’s more about the love in the scene than the love making. That’s what made it a story worth telling.
TVLINE | When she said she just wanted everyone to be safe, I felt that.
Right? They’ve been through this horrible experience together, and it’s human nature to want to be close to your best friends and to be comforted. She wants them to know that no matter what happens, she loves them both. No matter what decisions were made that night, they were going to keep loving each other. It’s such a beautiful culmination of the drama between these three.
TVLINE | Michael asked Alex if he thought they crossed a line. How do you think Maria feels?
I think she’s cool with her decision. She wanted some answers, so subconsciously there was an emotional comfort she needed. But she also had a little bit of an agenda. She needed some decisions made about the status of their relationships, so she thought, “Let’s throw everything against the wall and see where it lands.” I think she was just wondering if they made any progress on that front. She said it was OK for their feelings to be out in the open, but let’s just voice them for what they are. As we saw, Michael stepped up and was like, “No, I still love you and I’m with you.” Secretly, that’s what Maria was hoping for. By suggesting a threesome, she’s was basically telling Michael, “Make your choice… and I hope it’s me.”
TVLINE | Meanwhile, this whole situation was only one part of the episode. When Maria was running from Travis towards that cornfield, I felt like I was watching a horror movie.
We kept saying that when we were filming the episode. It was so fun. It was definitely like a mini horror/slasher film. We got to do all the things in this episode, including being chased by an axe murderer. All the creepy, eerie things that came with Travis’ farm made me want to go do a horror film.
TVLINE | And David Anders (as Travis) must have been so much fun to work with.
He was hilarious, but also such a powerful actor. We’d be joking around on set in between takes, but when got into character and started chasing me, I was scared. He really brought it. He was very fun to play with.
TVLINE | Generally speaking, how glad are you that Maria is finally in the know?
It’s so exciting! I really get to rock and roll this season with all the revelations that Maria is having. There’s always something new that she’s discovering, either emotionally or about her psychic past.
TVLINE | What are you excited for us to see from Maria this season?
I’m excited for people to see her go on her own journey, instead of just worrying about what Liz is up to. You’ll see her grapple with things that are important to her in her life. I’m happy that she’s part of the Scooby Gang and is ready to take on all the mysteries that come with Roswell — plus finding out her own history in that town, which is really important to the rest of the season.

The backlash I’ve seen about this on social media, and the way the cast and writers are talking about it. The contrast is huge.
they’ll get over it. There are gays that have been in 3somes with a woman and a dude
Maria really is a terrible friend. Can you imagine? Knowing your best friend is gay and in love with his ex and you kiss his ex in front of him? And then you kiss him? She doesn’t think of anyone but herself. Michael too is a rat for going along with it. At least its obvious now neither of them cared for Alex and they’ve sold me on the ship. Two horrible people who deserve each other.
Well… that’s one take on it. I don’t see that at all. Not a bit. People are a lot more complex than that.
Maria seems to have convinced herself that shes doing this for them when shes really doing this for herself. You don’t make out with your boyfriend in front of your best friend (who loves him) in front of him unless you have serious empathy problems. It seems a lot of people in this comment section are completely okay with that though. I mean we all have different experiences with friends, but I’d hope you don’t have any like Maria.
Guess what? They enjoyed themselves and no one said stop. I guess the 3 of them are terrible people.?
Well, that was… something. The disconnect between the cast and audience really does seem to be huge on this one. A little confused as to how this is being spun about making everyone feel safe/loved but in the next breath Heather acknowledges Maria has motivations re: wanting to witness Michael with Alex and then have Michael choose her. That’s… not love, at least not for her friend. If you have a friend like that, get a new one. Yikes.
Disconnect between what the writers think is happening and what the audience is seeing is nothing new with this show. It’s a weekly theme.
Also, I feel like the show wants me to hate Maria. I don’t want to dislike her but, damn, they do everything to make me feel that way.
Maria is a horrible friend. Please keep Michael/Maria away from Alex
This!
Alex deserves better than these two douchebags.
In the original series Michael and Maria were a together, but here they have no chemistry, so it makes no sense to push the relationship for the sake of originality when the show is so different already. Alex should have been this show’s Maria, he has crazy chemistry with Michael. Liz has better chemistry with Kyle, on screen pairings aren’t convincing at all, whoever did the casting missed it epically. In addition, I have an issue with three alien savior progenies being white blondes and the bad alien a person of color. This show mentions social justice, but I guess the casting team are as prejudiced as ever.
Lol! This makes zero sense. Alex has a mind of his own, if he didn’t want to participate he wouldn’t have.
I truly enjoyed that scene. I love Maria on the show and she’s the best thing about it for me. No one wants to see that Alex was also testing Michael to see who he wanted to be with. People are angry because they wanted Michael and Alex to end up together, so, what better way to channel that anger than to blame Maria, lol!
Yep one hundred percent Jen. That was completely a turn off for the show. I know they’re trying to be edgy (wow! People have threesomes!) but there’s a difference between edgy and cringey. And I’m sorry but Maria is the most selfish horrible person on the show.
The feeling safe aspect, but then saying this was to force Michael’s hand to pick one of them and hoping it’s her, that’s not supporting your friend or making him feel safe or good after this. Alex really deserves better than everyone on this show.
Also, why did Malex have to have another sad exchange at the end, can we not have one happy moment between them ever?!
I wanted Michael and Alex to at least hug each other before they parted.
Talking out of both sides of her mouth – Maria wants everyone to feel safe and Maria has an agenda. Problematic all around. She essentially used Alex to ease her insecurity. Not sure why this is being celebrated.
I think it was beautiful, and that they real did cross a line because some answers cleared during and after that threesome. I think they can really build on it though. Maybe even make them a polyamorous couple. Idk I think it would be interesting, I saw a big connection between them all. So maybe… who knows
There are a lot of people that seem to have a very limited idea of a very complicated subject. It was very genuine, and yeah, it seemed to shake a few issues out, but Alex didn’t seem to regret it. It definately made him more open to the idea of moving on.
I’m completely disgusted. I was with my sister who’s 14 and a lesbian and how do I talk about this episode with her. Alex said multiple times in the episode he is not attracted to women and the scene read like sexual coercion. He looked uncomfortable the whole time and basically he’s been great about it their relationship. He’s supported both of them this season and they do this. Like he’s gay. And what Maria happy to use her best friend knowing he is in love with her boyfriend but also that he supports her to feel better about her relationship. Like how can I like this character. Like I didn’t mind the triangle unlike a lot but this episode ruined Maria as a character and both relationships and friendships.
It’s a lot more complicated than that. Pay attention to what Alex ACTUALLY said.
But it isn’t always more complicated than that. And it’s still something that’s hard to explain to a 14 year old….. stop policing how people feel about this. Everyone has a right to feel how they feel about what happened, especially LGBT people
Sexual coercion? Especially LGBT people have an opinon?
You can’t tell someone to stop policing how people feel and then do it yourself.
She’s not telling you how to feel. She’s not saying ‘You’re supposed to think or feel this,’ that’s all you bro
I’m not your bro and telling someone to stop policing sounds like opinion an filled with feelings to me.
Folks really are closed minded and cannot see the whole picture – my 16 yr old daughter did not have an issue with it at all and it was done VERY tastefully
Michael said he wasnt attracted to women but Maria was the only woman he ever enjoyed kissing ,with other women it didnt feel okay to him
It was the conversation they had when Mariah was driving in the episode and they were talking about highschool stuff
I read this as setting up a polyamorous relationship with the 3 of them but
I feel Michael and Alex have been messy
Im wondering
e.g…. did you discuss Isobels self abotion storyline with her and how she is happy after it or Noah essentially abusing her mentally e.t.c…
all these themes are just difficult things to discuss with a 14 year old
“It’s what the audience deserves”. Well, if you hate your audience and think they should watch crap them I guess it is.
It’s cool if it was a one time thing (they set it up with the conversation in the truck with Alex telling Maria how he felt when he touched her – they didn’t de-gay Alex so calm down). Explore Michael and Maria for a bit, have Alex and green hair dude hook up during that time but ultimately have Michael and Alex together – and not at the very end of the show, they are a very interesting couple together. Anyway this was first episode of season two I actually liked (may have something to do with the annoying sister not being in it).
The biggest disappoint with this episode was that we really didn’t learn anything substantial about the mystery of Maria’s Mom or where she disappeared to. As for the triangle I think they could keep exploring as a throuple, but based on his last conversation with Michael, Alex still seems too damaged by his father to accept that he is lovable.
Hated it, very disappointed. I think it could have been okay or at least not horrifying if I hadn’t read this interview but the fact that …. Maria initiated a threesome after a traumatic experience and wanted everyone to be “safe” and to feel loved….. but then reveals it was Maria seeing if Michael would choose her instead? It was so manipulative and I’m so disappointed because I LOVED Maria and I’m glad she made such a bold choice, but post-mortem, it feels so manipulative. It *could* have been a very powerful, intimate moment, and I feel like…. the morning after scene ruined it, and I feel like Heather’s interpretation of the scene and her idea of what Maria was thinking……is just…… it really really ruins her character for me and I’m so bummed about that. I think she deserved better than having to initiate a threesome in order to see if a bi dude was gonna pick her…….and let’s not talk about the bisexual stereotypes here……
Just when I thought this generations television programs couldn’t sink to new lows Roswell (CW) proved me wrong.
What a dumpster fire this show is. And this is coming from someone who absolutely loved the original Roswell and wanted nothing more than to see it remade. Well, as they say, be careful what you wish for…
I haven’t watched the episode yet but I don’t think I’m going to like this. I was Michael and Alex to be together. While it’s great to show a threesome on TV and it not be about the sex I was really excited to have a male homosexual relationship on The CW that was with main characters. Only for it to be done within a few episodes. I like Maria, I like Michael, but I don’t like Maria and Michael.
This is why we can’t have nice things. The CW features a bisexual character and the viewers get greedy and bash the show when the bisexual character decides to live a straight lifestyle with someone of thr opposite sex.
Having a bisexual character is great. People want Michael and Alex together because they’re meant to be, not because they’re gay. That said, a lot of people aren’t mad that Michael was in a “”straight”” relationship. Most people I saw didn’t mind Maria and Michael together in the interim. What they do mind is the absolutely unnecessary threesome which is a wildly harmful stereotype against bisexual people, btw, and how Heather says the reason Maria initiated it was to find out if Michael loved her more. As a bisexual, I find that stereotype really really gross, really dangerous, and really hurtful.
Bisexual people are often seen as promiscuous, horny, unfaithful, greedy — etc. There are gay and lesbian people who won’t date bisexual people. There are straight people who won’t date bisexual people. Because people feel like bisexuals are more likely to cheat. To sleep around. Maria doesn’t trust Michael’s bisexuality so much that she INITIATED A THREESOME just to find out if he liked her more. That’s what people have a problem with.
This! Yes. The unfaithful, promiscuous bisexual stereotype is awful, and I hate that that’s what they’ve turned Michael into. And I hate that they took the strong, independent woman that Maria was and turned her into this backstabbing, manipulative, horrible friend because after one night of drunken sex she “fell” for Michael
This was a weird episode for me. All of the characters seemed off. How would that threesome possibly have been a good idea?? It didn’t make any sense that it would help Michael choose. I thought he had already chosen Maria. What a messed up situation. Alex and Maria are supposed to be best friends, he’s gay, she’s straight and they’re in love with the same guy. Awkward much? They just wanted to have a threesome on the show, and they used the most unhealthy triangle to do so. Next, maybe Maria could suggest a threesome with Max and Liz. That set a poor example for any teenagers watching the show (make bad choices!), and I found the whole thing disappointing.
I LOVED It. I really love Michael, Maria and Alex, so it’s really hard for me to pick one. I’m okay with this, though. We all know the couple in The beginning of a series (especially in a CW show) isn’t endgame, and Alex/Michael will come back together. The Michael/Maria relationship is something they both need right now…and Alex needs to find out who he is outside of Michael, so if something develops with Forrest? I’m fine with it.
Everyone’s been really mature…which, is what we deserve since they aren’t children. Though, I was low key hoping Alex/Michael/Maria became a thing lmao
I loved it, but I was hoping they would be a throuple. Seems like they are not headed that way, though. Poor Alex.
This was the BEST EPISODE to date!! My 16 yr old daughter and myself (50) were so loud and and had to pause it several times to say something about it…we LOVED how Max & Liv has to find their way back to each other & the backstory about the milkshake was so interesting & the scenes with Travis’ farm and the actor who played Travis did a superb job – I had “0” issue with the 3some scene and felt that it should it Very Tastefully and did not harp on it – my daughter and I felt it brought closure to the “up in the air” feelings Alex & Michael were questioning about each other & it now allows Alex to love on!!! Loving this show More & More !!! I loved the Original and am Loving this play on Roswell story also
The way I understood it is when Maria kissed Alex he kept saying he wanted to leave. Michael sits in between them and Alex and Michael kiss. So therefore I believe that when they had sex it was Alex and Michael and then Maria and Michael NO Alex and Maria.
When Alex and Michael talked after and said they both thought they would be together in the end it seems like they both realized it is indeed over.
Anyways I have no issued with that scene at all.
I will admit I was surprised they went there. Not bothered by the threesome, but surprised network tv went there. On a character note, I was buying the whole feeling-safe, feeling-loved aspect to it until I read this article. Maria’s agenda left a bad taste in my mouth. Part of it is because that’s just an awful thing to do to your ‘best friend’. But also, I am just not sold on her character, and I want Michael and Alex together. Frankly I want them to deviate from the original show more. They already did in alot of ways; making them adults, Noah the jerk, Rosa, and Michael and Alex LGBQT, so why not have Michael and Alex together? I’d like to have seen them work through the baggage of their past, and the awfulness of Alex’s father. So I find this whole Michael and Maria relationship disappointing.
On another note……I feel having David Anders on just to play the yen and yang of the horror movie twins a pure waste…..unless they plan to pull him in for a bigger arc.
I think it’s time for me and Roswell, New Mexico to part ways.
Alex didn’t have to participate so stop blaming Maria.
Alex said he should leave multiple times. As someone who comes from a background in which he was the victim of emotional, mental, and physical abuse saying no could be incredibly difficult for him. Given how many people who are victims themselves felt triggered by this scene, best case scenario is that this scene reads as coercion and manipulation
