Hello and welcome to B. Alex Massage !
At B. Alex Massage we focus on structural massage therapy. With structural/therapeutic massage therapy,  you present your specific complaint and the therapist assess your current condition. This will include taking a history, asking how long have you experienced the pain, whether the onset was sudden, how you experience the pain, etc. The therapist will also observe the way you move, test your range of motion, and feel the tissue during the treatment for consistency and texture.
Once the therapist has a good idea of your condition, a plan will be proposed for an approach to treatment. The actual massage, or treatment, is based on the assessment and the plan you have agreed to. At the end of the treatment, you and the therapist will review your results. Is the pain less? Is there more mobility? Has your posture improved? Based on the results, the therapist may recommend additional sessions.  An evaluation will take place at the end of each session to determine the continued course of therapy.
Although this may sound very involved, an experienced B. Alex Massage therapist will do the assessment and propose a plan quickly. You should experience some degree of relief in your very first session.

Before starting the review, I need to clarify a few things. While Alex provides deep tissue massage services, he is known for "trigger point massage". Trigger point massage is very different from any other types of massage services. To summarize, trigger point massage takes care of issues caused by "muscle knots". Lots and lots of times, whether it's from a work-out, stress, bad posture or what not, the muscles tend to form contractions and spasms from tiny patches of muscle tissue. Hypothetically, this reduces the rate of blood flow into the tissue which aggravates the area. The idea of trigger point is to remove these "knots" (aka tightening of your muscles) by targetted massage of areas where your muscles are tightening. Make no mistake..this massage will HURT a LOT (at least for the first 2-3 sessions). To give you an example of what he does, he will use his fingers and press into your body about 1/2 an inch deep (maybe more) and start massaging your muscles to relieve the pain. Those who think this is going to be your typical relaxation deep tissue massage with nice relaxation music and aromas are going to be in for a very big surprise. You may not get the aesthetics of what you get at such places, but Alex will get the job done and while your muscles will ache for 2-3 days after the session (I've been bruised) the tightening of your muscles will go away and you will feel SO relaxed. Just think of this as a really long and hard workout and having muscle pain for a few days. For all stress related muscle tightening and bad neck posture and poor sleeping positions, Alex will obliterate those muscle related issues right away. I cannot possibly recommend anyone better than Alex in the DMV area. In my books, he's #1. So let me tell a little about Alex and the things that made me extremely impressed about him. Besides him being board certified as a massage therapist (most places do NOT have board certified licensed massage therapists), Alex's knowledge of anatomy and biological sciences is incredible. One day, I had a fairly deep discussion of the biological mechanisms of oxidative stress and damage to the body. As someone who graduated from a top 15 school and who majored in biological sciences, I was extremely surprised that he was able to recollect all the minute details about cellular respiration and biological mechanisms such as the Krebs Cycle. He is the real deal. Alex is an extremely intelligent guy who knows his stuff and who can provide top notch "muscle problem" solving services using trigger point. So in sum, if you are serious about getting your core muscle tightening problems solved through massage Alex is definitely for you. While he uses a small room in a rehabilitiation clinic (nothing fancy), if you are serious about the service/massage and NOT the experience (zen music, aroma, interior design etc.) then this is absolutely worth it. You cannot compare this to any massage service in the area. He is the absolute best...the Rolls Royce of massage services in the DMV area. Just be warned...it's gonna hurt and you'll be yelling from the pain. No pain, no gain...NO PUN intended.
Spoiler alert: Alex is amazing! Alex works out of a physical therapy practice in a medical building, so as others have indicated the place is not a spa and you won't find that kind of environment. If you place a lot of value on the environment, then you'll want to think twice about booking here. With that said, the deep pressure is real that Alex provides and he's clearly incredibly skilled. I highly recommend giving Alex a try - I know I'll be back again for sure!
Whoa...that was intense...but it hurt so good. Ha! So I had my 1st session with Alex today after having one month of worsening neck/upper back pain and tension headaches. He explained to me that I actually needed a trigger point massage rather than a typical Swedish massage. So I was game....by this time I was up for whatever, just to have some relief... Well...the session wasn't particularly relaxing, but I know my body needed it. The trigger point massage was uncomfortable and at times, cringe-worthy, but I noticed my muscles loosening up with every stroke and point pressure. He also stretched me out and used a hot stone towards the end of my session, which was cool because I stepped up my leg routine this week, which left my quads and hamstrings sore and tight. Overall, I highly recommend Alex's services for those who need real body/muscle treatments. P.S. This is not spa....and his playlist on this particular day consisted of pandora's 80's mix..from Air supply to George Michael..I think I even heard some old school Whitney Houston. Ha! I almost bursted into laughter when Marvin Gaye's sexual healing came on. Now..Another person would probably feel awkward with that song playing in the background, but my weird sense of humor mixed with the slight tortuously painful nature of my session, made this a perfect yelp-able moment. But Alex is a cool and knowledgable guy, and he's about his business. I even signed up for 4 more sessions..I'll just request a different pandora station next time ;)
Just wanted to thank all my fellow Yelpers who put such great reviews for Alex because he did not disappoint. Alex put a whole new meaning to deep tissue massage. I've been quiet a few Asian spots that were good - decent, but Alex blows them out at his price point. I've been going pretty hard at the gym for the last two months and this was perfect to get rid of all that lactic buildup. Alex was really easy to talk to, and very very professional. To say he does his job well is an understatement. Other than his deep tissue massages I like how he incorporates stretching (as others have mentioned). I am not the most flexible guy, so he went to town bending my body. Ha. Overall, I highly recommend Alex if you have knots, sore or tender from your workouts. Will be going to him once a month, for sure.
I saw all these other great reviews so i called for an appt before buying my groupon and we agreed on an hour appt from 5-6. At 4:49 Alex calls me to tell me he has to cancel. I was almost at his office but I understand things come up so the next day I texted him explaining that I wasn't very happy about it because I had to rearrange things around to make that appointment time. I get a text back that the office is closed from now (oct 26) until the end of November. Why was that not mentioned during our conversation? so frustrated :(
Just as everyone else has said, Alex is the best and his massage is amazing. I hunch over the computer all day and my neck, shoulders and back have suffered the consequences. It does hurt but it's not unbearable and it's still relaxing in a strange way since you know what he's presing out of you isn't supposed to be there. After one massage I cannot believe how much better my neck and back feel. I will going back regularly and cannot recommend enough.
I was at home one day and came across Alex website on groupon. I was able to make an appointment with Alex the same day. A few hours later I arrived for my massage. His office is inside a medical building that he share with a physical therapy office. So if your looking for a spa like atmosphere this is not for you. Alex came out and greeted me and had me fill out one form. Then he took me back to the room and ask what type of massage did I want and what was my problem area. The lighting was just how I like it(dark) the music was nice too. Alex was AMAZING!! You can tell that he definitely had experience. I got the 90min Swedish massage and for a good price of only $65. He also incorporate stretching in his massages, that probably was my fav part. He also ask throughout the massage if the pressure was ok. I'm definitely going back to see Alex in the future. You won't be disappointed

Alex is the best deep tissue massage therapist I have had treat me. He is excellent. And, knows his craft. As others have posted, it is intense, but I gave him the green light. He will work with you to adjust his treatment to your needs. I bought 3 more sessions, and will be a regular.
