Where the University of Alabama gymnastics team prospers, Missouri suffers. The same goes vice versa.
So far this season, the Crimson Tide's strongest event has been the floor exercise. It is ranked fourth in the nation with an average score of 49.2 and a season high of 49.375. Alabama's score on the apparatus jumped between its first two meets, increasing by 0.35.
"Oh, I love the floor," Crimson Tide gymnast Ari Guerra said. "I always feel comfortable and confident going into floor because it's an event you get to express yourself."
The UA sophomore believes that event is where the team has improved the most, and she's not wrong. The 49.375 posted against LSU last week is the highest Alabama has scored on any of the four events.
After admittedly playing it a little safe at Oklahoma in the season opener, there was only one way Alabama coach Dana Duckworth could describe how her gymnasts competed specifically on floor against LSU: They attacked.
"We didn't hold back at all," she said. "We put it all out there."
The Tigers come in at ninth for the event with a 49.025 average. Out of all their season highs, their floor score is lowest.
When there are strengths, there are also weaknesses.
Alabama has struggled on the vault. In both meets, its lowest scores have been produced there. The opposite is true for Missouri. It put up a program-high 49.425 last week.
Clean execution has been the Crimson Tide's problem.
"The polish is going to come," senior Keely McNeer said. "The landings are going to come. It's a matter of trusting what we're doing."
Nationally, the Crimson Tide is still seventh with a 49.1 vault average. The Tigers are sixth with a 49.142 average. It's not a large difference, especially considering Alabama is ranked overall four spots higher than Missouri.
Increasing its total score in a week by 0.4, the Crimson Tide recorded a 197.1 most recently at home. Only the top four teams have scored that high at least once. Oklahoma is the only team to crack 198.
"We're going to get consistent and break 197 multiple times this season," Duckworth said. "That is going to pay off. You win championships in March and April, not January and February."
With that in mind, Duckworth plans to rest Kiana Winston against the Tigers. She'll still perform on the balance beam and floor, but she'll sit out the uneven bars and vault to save her shoulder.
The junior is nationally ranked on three individual events - third on bars, sixth on beam and ninth on floor - and fifth as an all-around competitor.
Planning to jostle the lineup at Missouri, the Crimson Tide hopes to tap into the depth it believes it has.
"We've had two wins in my book because we have learned a lot about this team," Duckworth said. "I do believe there's winning and there's learning. In our sport, there's really no losing unless you don't learn from it."
