feshacenjeoThe Liberty logo and label graphics have changed several times over the years, mostly when ownershipof the label changed hands. The original ownership of Waronker and Bennett used a drawing of the toppart of the Statue of Liberty as a logo, with "Liberty" below it. About the time the company was sold toAvnet, the logo changed to a wide crest that incorporated the Statue of Liberty motif. When Avnet soldthe company back to Bennett, the logo was changed to a box with rounded corners containing theStatue of Liberty. Finally, TransAmerica used a square-corner box with a silhouette of the Statue within.
The first Liberty label was blue-green with silver printing. "LIBERTY" above the center hole with adrawing of the Statue of Liberty above the logo, "LONG PLAYING MICROGROOVE" at the bottom of thelabel. The stereo issues had black labels with silver printing, with similar graphics except at the bottom ofthe label was "LONG PLAYING STEREOPHONIC" and there was a large "STEREO" designation underthe logo. This label was used from the start of the company to the third quarter of 1960, approximatelyLRP- 3140/LST-7140.
The promotional issue of the monaural label was white with black printing; the graphics were the same. The promotional issue of the stereo label was light blue with black printing.
Since the LRP-3000 series predated stereo by several years, at first all albums were mono. When stereobecame a novelty in mid-1958, Liberty started a new series, the LST-7000 series, to issue the stereocounterparts. At first, there was no particular correspondence between mono and stereo catalognumbers for the same album; in fact, there were both mono-only and stereo-only albums being issued. After less than 30 stereo albums had been issued, Liberty simplified their catalog numbering system bymaking the mono and stereo numbers correspond (LRP-3086 became LST-7086, etc.). A cross-reference of stereo number to mononumber is available by clicking this link.
The second Liberty label was black with silver printing. "LIBERTY" in white on a gold crest to the left ofthe center hole, the left quarter of the label being rainbow colored. Written vertically just to the right ofthe colored part was "LIBERTY RECORDS, INC. LOS ANGELES 28, CALIFORNIA". This label wasused until the first quarter of 1966, approximately LRP-3415, LST-7415. At that point, Liberty changedtheir logo; the new logo appears on albums as early as LRP-3417/LST-7417, but some later numbersstill have the old logo. Apparently, which logo was used depended upon when the artwork was doneduring the transition period.
The early promotional issues of the second Liberty label were white with black printing. Graphics werethesame, but there is no color on the label, and the left quarter of the label, which had the rainbow color oncommercial issues, was horizontally striped black and white. Later, the background color of thepromotional label was changed from white to a creme color, with the same graphics. Liberty used thissame promotional labelfor both mono and stereo promo issues even long after the regular label had changed to the rounded-box logo variation, probably due to using up the promo label stock on hand.
The third label was black with silver printing. The Liberty logo was in a white, rounded-cornered box tothe left of the center hole with a drawing of the Statue of Liberty. The left quarter of the label wasrainbow colored. "LIBERTY RECORDS, INC. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA" was written in a verticalline to the left of the center hole. Promotional issues were creme colored with black printing, the leftquarter of the label being rainbow colored. This label was used to the forth quarter of 1969,approximately LST-7620.
The forth label was almost the same except that the vertical writing was dropped and at the bottom ofthe label was "LIBERTY/UA INC. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA". The logo also changed from therounded-cornered box to a square-cornered box with a silhouette of the statue of liberty. This label wasused in 1970 and 1971.

One of the remarkable things about this session is that all three songs recorded ended up as million sellers! Admittedly, "Judy Don't Be Moody" got a free ride on the flip of "Splish Splash," but even if you don't count "Judy" as a separate million seller : 2 out of 3 is a fantastic score by any standard. It is even more remarkable considering the fact that this was not a standard three-hour session (in which usually four songs would be recorded), but a split session. Bobby was only allocated 90 minutes, after pop-jazz singer Morgana King had recorded "Since I Fell for You" and "My Reverie." In Michel Ruppli's Atlantic discography (1979), these two songs are erroneously credited to BD and as a result, they were included in a list of Atco/Atlantic recordings on the website, as mysterious unreleased tracks, until they were removed at my request in August 2001.

Bobby had been signed to the Atco label by Herb Abramson, who had co-founded Atlantic Records with Ahmet Ertegun in 1947. Upon returning from Germany after two years of belated military service in 1955, Abramson found Jerry Wexler sitting at his desk and working beside Ahmet in the studio and there was no easy way to push Wexler out. Abramson was given his own label, the newly formed subsidiary Atco Records. He became responsible for signing new talent to the label, organizing the sessions, and overseeing promotion and distribution. Herb supervised three unspectacular sessions by Bobby, in May and August 1957 and January 1958, resulting in three unsuccessful singles. For his next session, Bobby came up with "Splish Splash," a novelty rocker he had written in twelve minutes at the house of upcoming NYC deejay Murray Kauffman. Kauffman's mother, Jean Murray, had suggested the title and the first line ("Splish Splash, I was taking a bath") and was amply rewarded with a co-writing credit. Abramson didn't like the song at all and temporarily delayed the session until Bobby came up with "better material," indicating in the process that he didn't see much of a future for BD at Atco.Guitar
