Mel Winkler (October 23, 1941 – June 11, 2020) was an American actor, perhaps best known as the voice of Aku Aku in the Crash Bandicoot video games, from Crash Bandicoot: Warped to Crash Twinsanity .

Winkler was born to an African-American family in St. Louis , Missouri on October 23, 1941. [1]

In 1969, Winkler began a tap dancing career in Anything Goes . In 1970s and 1980s, He moved to New York City . Though Winkler mostly appeared in minor live-action roles, such as Melvin in Doc Hollywood , [2] in 1978 he appeared in a two-show Anything Goes as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and West Side Story as Action. He also spent time on Broadway, appearing in The Great White Hope in 1968, in August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone in 1988 and in Neil Simon's Proposals from 1997 to 1998. [3] [4] He is the voice of the guardian mask Aku Aku in the Crash Bandicoot series , Lucius Fox in The New Batman Adventures and Johnny Snowman in the TV series Oswald . In 2004, he appeared in The Tap Dance Kid as Dipsey.

Winkler died in his sleep on June 11, 2020. The cause of his death was not disclosed. [1] The video game Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is dedicated to his memory.

Aku Aku is the spirit of an ancient witch doctor who appears as a sentient, floating wooden mask. He looks over the Wumpa Islands as their benevolent protector and the Bandicoot family as their father figure. He has magically protected Crash over the years with his special powers and gives him important advice when the situation calls for it.
From Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped up to Crash Twinsanity, Aku Aku is voiced by Mel Winkler. In the games starting with Crash of the Titans, he is voiced by Greg Eagles.

Greg Eagles (born October 28, 1970) [1] is an American actor, producer and writer. He is best known for voicing the Grim Reaper in Cartoon Network 's Grim & Evil and its spin-off The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy . He is also known for voicing Captain Bob and Sketch Pad on HBO's Canadian-American children's television series Crashbox , Brother 6 and Rokutaro in Afro Samurai , Aku Aku in the Crash Bandicoot video game franchise, and several characters in the Metal Gear Solid games.

Eagles is especially known as the voice of The Grim Reaper in Grim & Evil and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy from Cartoon Network . In some of his appearances, he is also credited as George Byrd , Gregg Eagles , and Greg Eales .

Eagles is also currently working on an animation project for a television series titled Teapot , about an 11-year-old boy who wishes to be a rapping superstar. He worked on the pilot episode which aired in Nicktoons Network 's Random! Cartoons in which he created, produced, written, voice directed and even provided the voice of the titular character. The pilot was storyboarded and art directed by Dahveed Kolodny Nagy (creator of Supa Pirate Booty Hunt ) as well as Alex Almaguer, who worked as a writer and storyboard artist on Billy & Mandy , and directed by Robert Alvarez . He is planning to turn the pilot into a full TV-series when it gets picked up, even making an online opening sequence and full theme song. The cartoon short also had a Kickstarter and a now-lost Indiegogo campaign for a video game adaption, Teapot Rap it Up! but the project failed to reach its $2,500 goal. [2]
