Sex Education fans might be surprised to learn that Aimee Lou Wood—who not only made her screen debut in the show, but did so *in flagrante—*has ever grappled with a lack of confidence. In fact, it’s something of an ongoing battle. “ Sex Ed was the first TV show I’d ever done,” says Wood, who plays the guileless Aimee Gibbs—the acceptable face of Moordale High’s popular clique—on the Netflix hit. “Coming to terms with the camera… It took a little while.”
By now, with the show’s much-anticipated third season about to drop , Wood is more accustomed to the presence of the lens. “We were filming a crying scene for Season 3 and there was so much snot all over my face, I could feel it,” she recalls. “They asked me if I wanted to go again, and I was like, ‘No, it’s fine, I would be snotty, it’s real!’”
Wood credits time and therapy with helping her to build up her self-confidence. “With every year I’m more comfortable with who I am,” she says. Developing a solid sense of self is important to the 26-year-old, who—despite having already collected a BAFTA for her performance as Aimee—is clearly bursting with ambition for her future in the industry. “I really want to be the best actor I can be,” she says, adding that doing so requires a willingness to be vulnerable. “You have to be super close to yourself, and comfortable with it being revealed, in order to be a good actor. I want to be able to do a scene that will cost me something, and reveal parts of my soul.”
She’s also gradually getting used to the ways in which Sex Education has changed her life off-camera—from being recognized in public to navigating the red carpet. Wood, who picked up her BAFTA in a floral Miu Miu dress, says she’s starting to enjoy the events that are part and parcel of life for a rising star “more and more.” “In the past it has just been me stressing—‘I hope people like me, I hope I look okay, I need to check the mirror again!’ The more confident I become the more fun those things get,” she says. “It’s just not the end of the world if some people don’t fucking like your dress.”
Aimee Lou Wood stars as Aimee Gibbs in Netflix’s Sex Education .
Wood is coming to terms with the loss of her anonymity, as post-lockdown life ramps up again and the buzz around the show’s return builds. “I went to All Points East [music festival] and there were Sex Education posters everywhere,” she says. “It felt like every person was recognizing me. My friends were like, ‘This is mad! The last time we were at a festival, no one gave a shite who you were!’” Though she admits to still having the odd “wobble,” the actor says she’s benefited from observing how Bill Nighy, her co-star in the forthcoming Living , deals with fame. “It was very helpful watching him,” she says. “He handles it all perfectly. He’s so gracious and lovely to literally every single person who recognizes him.”
Of course, Nighy isn’t the only screen veteran Wood has been rubbing shoulders with. Gillian Anderson, who plays fan favorite Dr. Jean Milburn on Sex Education , is “just amazing,” Wood says. “She has a certain power to her… her presence is unreal.” Then there’s Jemima Kirke, the former Girls star who’s joining the cast as Hope Haddon, Moordale’s new headmistress. “Oh my god, we were all so starstruck!” gasps Wood. “She’s the coolest person ever.”
Wood says every member of the cast, old or new, was “filled with gratitude” simply to be back on set in spite of lockdown. “We were one of the first shows to go back to filming,” she says now. “We were tested three times a week, but still we all knew nothing was guaranteed. In the past we’ve filmed in the summer, but this time around it was freezing, we were wearing masks in between takes, and eating alone in our trailers. But I was just so grateful to be working again.”
Sex Education has been lauded for its sensitive handling of tough subjects, and Wood—whose own character was dealing with the fallout from an incident of sexual assault when we last saw her—says fans can expect a “deepening” of those difficult storylines, as well as the comedy and chemistry the show’s charismatic young cast delivers in spades. “I’m so grateful that I was trusted with that storyline. We had such incredible feedback from so many people who had been through similar stuff,” she says.“That’s what Sex Ed does so beautifully: it’s happy then sad, tragic, then funny. It really captures what life is.”
