Agora Garden - eco skyscraper from Taiwan

June 30, 2020

Rest from your daily work is just as important for decent results, even if your work is not physically or emotionally demanding. Today we present an overview not of a simple skyscraper, but a building designed according to all principles of green building.

The capital city of Taiwan has many interesting buildings, but one of them is truly unique. The project Agora Garden Tower, also called Green DNA, was presented to the world in 2010 by Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut. After the presentation the project won three prestigious awards: the International Architecture Award (Chicago, 2014), the Design Innovation Award (Chicago, 2014) and the World Architecture Festival Award (Singapore, 2015).

The tower was built in early 2018 (exclusively from environmentally friendly and recycled materials) in full compliance with the objectives set out in the Copenhagen Accord:

  • Reducing global warming risks;
  • Protecting biological diversity;
  • Protecting nature while maintaining the quality of human life;
  • Natural resource management and waste management.

The building is truly a DNA helix. Each of its 20 floors rotates by 4.5 degrees, which allows the entire structure to turn exactly 90 degrees from the ground. The architects took wind and solar analyses into account in their planning to optimise natural lighting and ventilation throughout the building. The roof is made of solar panels and 23,000 living trees should absorb about 130 tons of carbon dioxide annually. That's how much vegetation the architect has managed to accommodate in the city centre, thanks to the tropical climate of the country. In addition, the tower has its own rainwater collection and purification system.

All this made it possible to create a special ecological space, a real symbiosis of urban man and nature.

Apartments in the complex are unusually large - 650 square meters. However, this is the norm for the local market and traditions. Each apartment has its own green areas, which they can turn into gardens or vegetable gardens. In addition to four high-speed elevators, there is also a car lift, a swimming pool, a fitness center and a club area on the roof.

The US Green Building Council has awarded the tower LEED Gold+ green certification. And the Low Carbon Construction Alliance, which is committed to minimizing carbon emissions, awarded the tower a Diamond level.
