Mercado Libre, Latin America’s largest e-commerce company and fintech acquirer, has signed an agreement with Agility Robotics to deploy Digit, the latter’s humanoid robot, in its fulfilment centre in San Antonio, Texas.
The company also plans to deploy Agility Robotics’ robots across more of Mercado Libre’s warehouses in Latin America. The companies will begin with commerce-support tasks and will test how humanoid systems can fit into the e-commerce company’s existing workflows.
The agreement aims to address labour gaps, automate repetitive work, and improve workplace ergonomics. Both companies will evaluate how Digit can support logistics operations and help staff shift to more value-added roles. With this, Mercado Libre has joined other companies deploying Agility’s robots, including GXO, Schaeffler, and Amazon.
“At Mercado Libre, we are constantly exploring how emerging technologies can elevate our operations and improve the experience for our employees and millions of users,” said Agustin Costa, senior VP of shipping at Mercado Libre, in a statement.
Digit will move materials in the Texas facility by walking, lifting, and carrying totes (plastic bins) through standard warehouse aisles. Agility said the robot can integrate into existing layouts without significant changes. The robot has already handled more than 100,000 totes in live operations, the company noted. Costa said the deployment is a step towards building a “safer, more efficient, and adaptable logistics network.”
Daniel Diez, chief business officer at Agility Robotics, said the company is “excited to partner with them [Mercado Libre] to integrate our autonomous humanoid robots capable of performing meaningful work and delivering real value into their facilities.”
Agility asserted that Digit can take on high-turnover roles and support continuous workflows. It uses AI to learn new tasks and adapt to different processes. The robot utilises Agility ARC, the company’s cloud platform for managing robot fleets within enterprise systems, for task allocation.
