How often do you see a black anime?
**********************************************
I found this lineart and decided to color it. Just to work on my CGing.
I HOLD NO CREDIT FOR THE LINEART!!! ALL CREDIT GOES TO THE CREATOR OF THE LINEART!
**********************************************
My scanner broke! I usually make my own lineart (and it usually comes out crappy anyway...) but the only way I can get pencil work on my computer is through my scanner....now I'm mad!!!!!

Hello, I know it's been a while since you worked on this, but I decided to rehash your character.

oh my gosh! i am like dying to find a shoujo manga with the lead as a black girl! that really would be cool, ur work is awesome btw
It's a great idea to draw African-American anime such as The Boondock.
I like the skin-tone, very nice that you did not use one flat color for the entire work. Even better is the physique, to which you did not add any excess. Ver nice.
Nice! I have a new drawing! Come see.
ITS ABOUT TIME xDD lol i luv the hair btw
You just about never see black in anime, and most of the time when you do, they horribly overexaggerate their features; sometimes to the point of not even looking human anymore. Pictures like this are a rather nice breath of fresh air.
If I may offer some constructive critism, the hair seems a mite too highlighted given respect of the background, other than that, nice coloring.
I really like how you did the hair (very free flowing, i think), and the eyes makes her look Mysterious
I did a google search of african american men for anime.... not many at all that aren't portrayed as the bad guy....tho for some reason this lovely lady popped in there too... great work, tho I faved this a looong time ago
I didn't find a lot either. That's why I colored this in this way.
Thanks!
African american anime characters need to be repreented more. they make the shows less boring.
Most of the time when I do see one, they're in the scene for a few seconds as a servant or a backup soldier. But nothing special.
I wonder why its so rare to see black anime characters nowadays? In older animes, they were fairly common. But now, they're rarer than aliens!
Not common, indeed...

She look cute. I would have asked her out in my youth x3
I can understand why it's not common. There aren't a lot of people of African descent in Japan.

I believe that we are living in a time of togetherness. A time where people are more open to other racial groups and make peace to the best of our abilities. With that has come the diversification of characters in the media. Back in the 1980s and 1990s there weren’t many black anime characters, mainly because the Japanese did not want to be rude and portray an African in the wrong way. Many people were still learning about each other.
American cartoons has had many African characters such as Static Shock, Green Lantern, Miles Morales, the kids from the Boondocks, Gerald from Hey Arnold! The Black Panther, Fat Albert, Storm from X-Men. You get the point. Having characters of a darker skin color in cartoons, movies and TV shows is not about racism. It is about having relatable characters. Now with cosplay being such a huge hobbie world wide, many people just want characters that look like them. That is why Miles Morales came to be. People just want a character that looks like them. When I first watched Avatar the Last Airbender, Aang looked like me and I was happy.
Many film companies just want people to be happy and enjoy their movies and TV shows. Many Japanese companies have started to do the same because their audience is from all over the world. So why not appeal to the people from many walks of life.
Not only is he one of the tailed beast of the Naruto world but he is also a rapper. I wonder what Masashi Kishimoto was thinking when he created Killer Bee. Even his name sounds like a rapper name. Some people like him and some people hate him. He might not be the best rapper but he got a notebook full of rhymes to improve his skills. Luckily he fights better than he raps and he even taught Naruto how to control the 9 tails fox. Straight outta the Cloud village. Killer Bee is one of the coolest black anime characters ever made.
The Fourth Raikage right hand man in Naruto. Darui is a dark skin ninja of the hidden cloud village. He is pretty laid back and for such a calm individual he is really strong. He went up against Suigetsu as well as the legendary Kinkaku and Ginkaku. He wields a large broad sword and uses both the lightning element jutsu of his village as well as black lightning which is a rare ability that only he knows. Darui would soon become the fifth Raikage of his village do to his skills and abilities.
The Raikage is one powerful ninja. One of the main things about the raikage that people notice first is his hair braids which is commonly an African style of hair. The raikage is everything that an African American is in real life. Tall, physically strong, blunt. He is a really cool character that many African Americans like to cosplay.
Huey & Riley Freeman from the Boondocks are one heck of a team. Well, I don’t know if they should be call a team since they are always fighting. I put these two together because they are from the same show and they are like the Ying Yang. While Riley is more of the thug African American kid, Huey is the more relaxed voice of reason type of character.
The Boondocks attack the social issues that African Americans face. Inspired by anime, the Boondocks tend have many Easter eggs. It is satire and attacks many subjects that people are too shy to talk about. While Riley creates chaos and shows the thug side of being a black person, Huey tries to make sense of the things that happen in his community. This Ying Yang shows us both sides and how they collide and the show manages to tell its story with an incredible sense of humor that the majority of people can understand no matter what raise you are.
Some people might say, “but wait, Sokka from Avatar the Last Airbender is not black.” When we use the word “black” we are referring to humans with a lot of melanin, brown skin. The water tribe in Avatar the Last Airbender are based of the eskimo. That is why Sokka and many people of the water tribe have a darker skin tone.
Sokka is one funny character. Despite of the fact that he is not a bender, he is a great strategist and gets all the ladies. Sokka is the kind of guy that gets the party started.
Katara from Avatar the Last Airbender is one powerful waterbender. She has to be one of the best written female characters (not mary sue) in animation history. While she does promote the whole “girl power thing” she still remains to be this feminine flower. She is loving, she is caring, she does not turn her back on people that need her. She is a hero and that is why she ended up being the wife of Avatar Aang.
Katara should be the role model for many young girls. She fights when she needs to, not because she wants to. She is strong but she is not stupid. Katara knows her limits and best of all is her morals. When she met Hama the first blood bender, she refused to learn the new waterbending form because she thought it was too dark.
Fun fact about Afro Samurai, the first foreign Samurai in Japan was actually an African slave that was brought to Japan in 1579 and served Nobunaga. The black Samurai was named Yasuke. He was brought to Japan by an Italian Jesuit missionary. Afro Samurai kind of reminds of that Samurai.
With its hip hop theme, Afro Samurai takes in a futuristic but feudal Japan (pretty cool huh). He seeks revenge for the death of his father and to regain the number one headband. It is bloody as expected from a samurai fill, gory and you will die laughing.
Afro is soft spoken and serious. Always focused on his mission and constantly being attacked since he wears the number two headband. To lighten the mood Ninja Ninja is always there to crack a joke.
Michiko Malandro and her series Michiko Hatchin takes place in Brazil. I am assuming that you already know that Brazil is mixed with European Caucasians and Africans. Michiko is one sexy mama. She is daring and a criminal. She escapes from a prison fortress that is suppose to be difficult to get out from. Funny enough she had escaped from the prison for the fourth time. Michiko is a bad bitch that you just dont want to mess with. A “free willed diva.”
Carole Stanley from Carole and Tuesday is a strong willed girl. The story takes place in a futuristic setting where humanity has colonized planet Mars. She is a slim black girl living in the future with hopes of making it as a musician. I absolutely loved this anime and I actually ignored it for months. She teams up with a girl named Tuesday who also has the same dreams. While Tuesday is this quiet sensitive girl, Carole is the more outgoing loud mouth. Carole was a refugee and managed to survive by working odd jobs and living in someone’s storage room. She is very resilient and persistent.
Marik Ishtar from Yugi-Oh is one hell of a villain. People thought that Pegasus was evil. When Marik came to the picture in the battle city dueling tournament, duels became really crazy. This guy pulled every trick in the book. He manipulated his servants, he chained his opponents and put them in dangerous situations if they so happen to lose.
Marik is from Egypt which is why his skin tone is darker. Because it is an anime of course they have to make his hair blonde. Blonde hair in anime usually means that the person is very important. If you watched Yugi-Oh that is exactly how he sees himself. Someone who was destined for so much more and got tire of waiting for the pharoah to return.
