This will be a lengthy post, but hopefully a helpful one.
I’ve always loved breast stimulation during intimate times with my husband. He’s a “boob man”, so he loves to give that attention as well.
I breast fed my son for 9 months, and I had been an over producer at that time, so I knew I could be successful, if it was possible.
The first time I induced lactation, I was 39 years old.
I pondered and researched for several weeks before getting the courage to go to my husband with the idea of ANR and lactation.
My main source of reference was the dreaded internet. But I found this information https://www.asklenore.info/breastfeedin ... rint.shtml , and I knew I could do it.
Addressing the idea with my dh was tricky. After dinner one evening, after putting my son to bed (age 3 at the time) while cleaning the kitchen, I asked him if he would like to become invested in something that would bring us closer as a married couple. He paused and raised an eyebrow and said a hesitant “sure?”.
I explained that since we both loved my breasts, that we could try inducing and ANR. His eyes lit up and I explained what I had read, and what we would do, and the rest is history.
I was on birth control patches at the time, and it gave us the perfect starting place.
I pulled the patch and he started suckling every 2-3 hours (we work together in our business so it wasn’t usually difficult to slip away for 20 minutes).
It was difficult to maintain around the clock suckling because it would often lead to “other things”, and we would get off track with timing the suckling sessions. We tried that for a couple of weeks and decided we needed a better plan.
Exhaustion and work don’t go hand in had, so I bought a medela pump in-style double breast pump and started pumping for 15 minutes on each side, every two hours around the clock, any time dh wasn’t able to break away, or wanted to sleep. (So then I was the only one exhausted because my dh could sleep through the night if he wanted to). But I was dedicated to being successful.
My son was a preemie, so I used what I learned during that time to reinforce the importance of keeping a schedule. This is one of the lessons that is sooo important. You have to make time to suckle, express, or pump every two hours if you want to induce as part of your ANR.
When I share my story, I get a lot of raised eyebrows when I tell them I either had dh suckling or I was pumping every two hours. But I wanted milk! Not a little…. I wanted ample supply to nurse my husband whenever he wanted.
We were using condoms for birth control, and that made me nervous, but we didn’t want to mess up my efforts to produce.
I ordered Dom from inhousepharmacy (where I just ordered a new supply from as well). And I started taking it as recommended by the Newman-Goldfarb protocol.
Because I had unintentionally been fooling my body with hormones, when I came off the patch, my milk came in fast. And it came in a big way.
My breasts went from a B to a D in the course of a couple weeks. Veins looked like spiderwebs throughout my breasts. And my nipples were swollen and very sensitive.
The first bit of pre-milk started appearing and I got serious. I started drinking three cups of mother’s milk tea every day. I also took fenugreek and started using bittersweet chocolate instead of milk chocolate for an evening treat.
I would have my dh suckle as often as possible, and for sure every evening. After each 10 minute session, I would rest my breasts for 30 minutes and then do two 10 minute pumping sessions spaced 10 minutes apart. Then wait two hours and repeat.
I was four months in and pumping 3 Oz per side every evening.
My husbands would get mouth fulls, and I would leak all over the place during our intimate times. I could shower and get sprays without expressing. It was more than amazing!
And then my dad got sick….. and I had to miss a couple weeks of regular routine, and my milk dwindled too an ounce at each evening pumping. I was heartbroken. And instead of trying again… I quit. We were in milk for about 7 months before I quit. It was so hard to stop but I had lost so much ground, I didn’t have the heart to try again.
I knew at some point I would want to induce again, so instead of going back on traditional birth control, I had a Mirena IUD put in because of the low impact it would have on me when i wanted to start again, and went on with life.
We continued our ANR and he would get droplets of milk occasionally until my milk dried up. But since I had stopped pumping and got off of the dom, it went away fast.
Three years went by and I decided to induce and be in milk by the time my husband and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary. We had slowed down and gotten lazy with suckling sessions so it was easy to start the process incognito. I went back to my rule book (the Newman-Goldfarb protocol), and started again.
I started by using progesterone cream this time (compounded by my local pharmacy).
I applied it 4 times a day to my breasts.
After a few days I started spotting so I knew the progesterone was doing it’s job.
After 2 weeks I started taking dom again, and i didn’t touch my breasts for 7 weeks. Just enough to wash in the shower, but no special attention during our intamate time, and not for any reason other than to apply the progesterone cream.
I stopped drinking coffee and started consuming lots of water.
On the evening of our anniversary, we had rented a cabin in the country for the night, and as we immersed ourselves into the whirlpool tub to soak, my husband commented that he thought my breasts looked fuller than normal. I just shrugged and told him thanks.
After a nice long soak, we started a suckling session. And low and behold, he got milk! Of course I was shocked because I hadn’t been checking to see if I had started producing yet. I was leaving my breasts untouched.
It was an awesome treat for both of us that night.
It wasn’t like the first time I induced though.
I kept up the dom but wasn’t able to keep to the two hour pumping/ suckling schedule because I went back to working in our storefront.
I ordered a tens (I-tens) and used it every two hours for 20 minutes while at work, and manual expression every time I had a chance to slip away to the restroom. I started carrying a water bottle everywhere I went so it wouldn’t look odd that I was going to the restroom every few hours. Drink a lot of water=regular bathroom breaks.
Dh was suckling every two to 4 hours and I was pumping when he wasn’t able to be there. He would suckle before bed and I would pump at least once during the night.
I even made lactation cookies (yummy).
So you can see why my milk never really had a good chance. I was able to pump an ounce on each size if I was lucky, but it was better than nothing.
I only lasted four months this time. My old man companion dog got cancer and I spent 6 depressing weeks comforting him until it was time to let him go.
So even though I kept taking dom and pumping every few hours, my mind was elsewhere and I quit a week after he passed.
This time our ANR took a hit because we were our hearts weren’t in it after his loss, so we would get in a session maybe once a week, but it dwindled.
What I learned from inducing the second time:
1. Schedule is everything.
2. You have to be in the mindset to get production of any kind. When you aren’t feeding an infant, it’s easy to lose focus and things go south quickly.
3. Dom is critical if you want to get consistent production unless you are able to suckle every two hours.
4. Pumping is a good substitute when my dh wasn’t home, but my production was best when my husbands was mouth drawing out my milk. The emotional connection when skin touches skin does so much more, mentally, than the rhythm of a breast pump winding away in your brain.
5. I believe any kind of birth control - even the progesterone laced iud I had, interfered with my production. It’s useful to prepare the breasts to make milk, but not so much once I got past that part of the process. There was no way I was having it removed, so I just accepted the idea that I would have some reduction.
6. If you use a tens, pay attention to the condition of the gel pads, and don’t reuse them more than recommended by the manufacturer. Turns out I’m allergic to the gel used in some brands and I have broken out in a rash on my breasts when using the wrong ones. So I’ve had to shop around for an electrode/ gel pad combo that doesn’t irritate my skin.

The third time, at age 47, I induced with the use of progesterone cream for three weeks. I started dom a week after the progesterone cream, and started pumping whenever possible after three weeks had passed.
Dh would suckle at night, but our ANR had fizzled to not much of anything, so I was inducing more for the spice it added to our intimate relationship than anything this time. So I never really measured my success at inducing. We got milk drops and mild sprays during suckling, but as usual, life got busy and my milk dried up over time.

Now, at age 51, one year into menopause, we are trying again. This time it’s simply for me. I enjoy the process. It’s an added plus for our ANR, which in on again, off again, on again…….
I’m one week into the process today. Im taking dom (3 tabs/ 4 times a day), getting a suckling session in the evenings and whenever dh feels like it, but mostly hand massage and using my breast pump for now. Because I’m not home early enough in the day most days, and my son is out of school for the summer, there’s little privacy in our home right now, except evenings.
If I go another 2 weeks with no advancement,I plan to go to my gyn and request progesterone birth control pills and I’ll start over and give the process it’s due time, like I should be doing now.
But… we will see.
And that’s it.
Now for my question:
Are there any older women who have induced after menopause has set in? If so, what did you find helpful that you could share?

Hi
Thanks for sharing this you have had quite a trek. My wife has never breast feed any of our four children. She is now 50. And I wish I had tried it when I could off.
I am following your post to see if we have any hope of trying to ANR I doubt it. Not this late in life. But maybe fingers crossed .
Let's see.

I definatly believe it’s possible. From my understanding of how the human body works, and all the research I’ve done, lactation can be induced at any age as long as the physical and chemical parts are still functional.
I’m getting fullness, but the firmness isn’t there. Life doesn’t get slower so it’s even more difficult to keep a schedule but I’m trying.
If I were inducing to bring home an infant, the drive and determination for success would be higher, and I’m sure I could be successful.
I’m just being lazy right now and trying to see how far I can get.
I’m not in a hurry this time, so if I have to start over and go back to my “book” and do it the right way, I will. Lol. Just seeing how responsive my body will be with the minimum amount of effort.

Good luck.
Please stay in contact.

Update….. this 51 and a half year old, just started producing colostrum. Right breast is always an over achiever. It comes in a day or two before the left so I’m going to have my dh suckle an extra session on both sides tonight to help bring it in on both sides.
Dom - 3 x a day, pumping during the day, suckling at bedtime, and manual massage at work when I can.
So never say never.

Having drops from each side now. Hope someone will find this useful. Will keep posting - even if it’s just for my own reference down the line.

This really fills me with hope.
We are on try number 2, we just had a few drops of white milk coming through last time and then the middle of the night suckles dropped off and we got distracted.
This time it seems to have started things moving quicker. My breasts are aching so badly and I cannot sit next to my hubby without my nipples tingling and my breasts feeling like they are going to explode. I had to hand massage in a bathroom in town today as I couldn't wait anymore.
I'm sure it's far more for me than him at the moment but I'm sure the response he gets post suckle (makes me horny as hell!) Is helping him to keep up the routine. I'm hoping when my milk kicks in that he will find the need for suckling too.

I won't take meds as I absolutely do not want to get pregnant so won't take anything to interfer. But looking into blessed thistle and fenugreek to encourage my milk to come in.

Any further advice?

I am 48 and went through early menopause due to a hysterectomy. My milk came back without even really trying. Oral stimulation (nipple or clitoral) and fenugreek. I went from 36D to 36DDD in no time!!

I’m so encouraged by reading these! My hubs and I are 58, empty nesters, and just discovered I could possibly do this! We are THRILLED. I Just ordered my first pump, my first nursing bras in 25 years, lanolin, gel pads, tens unit, and anything else I could think of! My problem is my mother lives with us! She is a very Catholic 80 year old. I have no idea how I’m going to explain this to her. We live on the top floor of the house so we do have a lot of privacy, but my breasts are going to get huge and I don’t know how I’m going to explain it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I
Have you started? How exactly do you use the tens unit and which one did you get??
